Cameroon's World Cup squad has settled a dispute about unpaid bonuses with the country's football federation after refusing to travel to Brazil. The players went on strike on Sunday and refused to leave their hotel in Yaounde for a flight to Rio de Janeiro, where they were expected to land last night. The Indomitable Lions have refused to play in the past over rows with the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) on appearance payments for the players. On Saturday, the World Cup warm-up match against Moldova went ahead, but the players boycotted the traditional handing over of the national flag to the team captain following the game. Manager Volker Finke was forced to accept the national flag Prime Minister Philemon Yang was forced to give it to their German coach Volker Finke instead. FECAFOOT said it had settled the dispute with the Cameroon government and the players will receive 5.8m CFA francs (£7,200) on top of the 50m CFA francs (£62,000) originally offered to take part in the World Cup tournament. Spokesman Laurence Fotso told the Reuters news agency: "Everything is ok now. We will embark tonight. "That money is given (by Fifa) three months after the end of the competition. (FECAFOOT) borrowed money as a private loan to satisfy the players." Mr Finke told German broadcaster Sport1: "There has been an agreement now and there is no need to make a big sensation out of it or make huge stories out of it." The squad will arrive in Brazil on Monday morning - just four days before their opening game against Mexico. Boko Haram Threat Spreads Into Cameroon (7:28am)
The Nigerian-born Islamic militant group Boko Haram is terrorising communities inside neighbouring Cameroon and snatching young boys from across the border and forcing them to join the sect. We saw abandoned villages and burned-out schools inside Cameroon, despite the presence of hundreds of troops including some of the country's top soldiers from the elite rapid response unit Battalion D'Intervention Rapide (BIR). The huge 1,243-mile (2,000km) border with Nigeria is mostly unmanned and un-policed, allowing Boko Haram to cross over and mount attacks inside Cameroon with horrifying regularity. Soldiers from the BIR are desperately trying to stop the spread of Boko Haram in their country. But the sect, which appears to be trying to create an Islamic fundamentalist belt across West Africa, continues to wreak terror and destruction all along the border. Nigeria has accused Cameroon of not doing enough and has said Boko Haram fighters and leaders are using the country as a safe haven. But the country's military leaders insist that is not the case. Cameroon Defence Ministry spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Badjeck told us: "They are not in Cameroon. Why would we allow that? This is bad for Cameroon. "We are suffering too at the hands of Boko Haram." Cameroon has put elite troops on the border He said the country may have reacted slowly to the Boko Haram threat but had reacted as soon as they realised it was growing and encroaching into Cameroon. There are now hundreds of troops including those from the elite BIR unit, up to the north. The border lines are often difficult to decipher with no markings or obvious difference between the two countries. In the town of Amchide, the border cuts right through the town with roughly two-thirds of the town under Nigerian control and the remaining third in Cameroon territory. We were with the elite unit as soldiers patrolled through the town and up to a rope across the road which signalled the end of Cameroon land. About 100 metres away, some Nigerian soldiers cheerily greeted their counterparts. Alex Crawford is with the elite Cameroon unit BIR as it fights extremists There appears to be much more cordial relations on the ground amongst the foot soldiers than there is between their respective political masters. In other communities, the villagers told us how Boko Haram militants stormed in during the day, trying to snatch young boys to add to their recruits. One young lad told us how he was approached by the militants as he worked in the fields. They at first tried to persuade him to join them. When he refused, the situation turned ugly but somehow he managed to run away. The eyes of the world are on Syria and Iraq at the moment as the Islamic militants there shock with their brutal attempts to wrestle control of swathes of both countries. But according to the Cameroon military, the Islamic militants of Boko Haram are fighting a similar terror campaign in West Africa. The sect is spreading across the northeast of its own country but also spilling over into its neighbours. Cameroon, with its long, unchecked border, is possibly most vulnerable. And so far, despite the attempts of even some of its top soldiers, the Boko Haram fighters, far from being defeated, appear to be growing in strength and numbers.- published: 19 Jun 2014

Sat, Apr 05 2014 CDT by Reinnier Kaze Yaoundé (AFP) Suspected Boko Haram gunmen seized two Italian priests and a Canadian nun in northern Cameroon overnight Saturday, in the latest kidnapping of Westerners in the remote, insurgency-wracked corner of west Africa. The attack occurred overnight in the small parish of Tchere, which lies about 40 miles (60 kilometres) from the corner of northern Nigeria that serves as a base for the Islamist Boko Haram group. A group of armed men pulled up at the parish shortly before midnight, according to Henri Djonyang, the region's head vicar, information that was confirmed by police. The gunmen ransacked the parish before seizing the priests and nun, according to news reports. The priests were identified as Giampaolo Marta and Gianantonio Allegri and the nun as Gilberte Bussier. One of the two priests taken on Friday night had been in Cameroon for more than six years while the second had arrived around a year ago, the Ansa media agency reported. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Djonyang pointed the finger of blame at Boko Haram, who have carried out several kidnappings in the region over the past year. "They are the ones who did it," he said. - Latest Westerners seized - Kidnappings of Westerners have become common in the remote and sparsely populated region, where borders between countries are porous. In November 2013, French Catholic priest Georges Vandenbeusch was seized by heavily armed men who burst into his parish at night and reportedly took him to neighbouring Nigeria in an attack claimed by Boko Haram. He was released seven weeks later, touching down in Paris on January 1. Vandenbeusch was abducted from his home near the town of Koza in northern Cameroon, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Nigerian border. He was seized by about 15 people who had first gone to the nuns' house, apparently to look for money, giving him time to warn the embassy. In February 2013, a Frenchman employed by gas group Suez was kidnapped in the same area together with his wife, their four children and his brother, while visiting a national park. They were taken to neighbouring Nigeria and also held by Boko Haram, before being released in April. France and other European countries have often been accused of paying ransoms for hostages, claims the governments have repeatedly denied. The insurgency by Boko Haram, a group aiming to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria, has killed thousands since 2009. Abuja in February sealed a portion of its border with Cameroon to block the movement of insurgents and other criminal groups. In early 2012, a heavily-armed band of foreign poachers slaughtered over 300 elephants for their ivory in Bouba N'Djida National Park. Since the incident Cameroon has increased protection at its park and announced plans to hire 2,500 new rangers to be deployed across the country.

It comes a day after 118 people died in a twin bomb attack in the central city of Jos, also blamed on Boko Haram. In the latest attack, Boko Haram fighters reportedly spent hours killing and looting in the village of Alagarno. Alagarno is near Chibok, from where the schoolgirls were abducted last month. The abductions of more than 200 girls caused international outrage and have put pressure on the Nigerian authorities to deal with the threat from Boko Haram. People in north-east Nigeria are extremely vulnerable to attacks because many areas are no go zones for the military and the insurgents operate freely, the BBC's Will Ross reports from the country. Witnesses in Alagarno said the suspected Boko Haram fighters arrived close to midnight, and killed and looted for hours before leaving in stolen vehicles. One survivor told the BBC that every single building in the village had been torched. 'Fully committed' Meanwhile, the search for bodies is continuing in Jos following Tuesday's twin bombings that reduced buildings to rubble. The attacks targeted a crowded market and a hospital, and the second blast went off 30 minutes after the first - killing rescue workers who had rushed to the scene. Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the bombings, and said those who carried out the attacks were "cruel and evil". His office said he was "fully committed to winning the war against terror". He announced increased measures to tackle the militants, including a multinational force around Lake Chad which comprises a battalion each from Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria.
