London's Greenwich - one of the world's top 10 destinations
Leading global travel publisher Frommer's, a branded imprint of John Wiley & Sons Inc., has revealed the Frommer's Top Destinations List for 2012. This distinguished annual list, compiled by Frommer's writers and editors, features an inspiring choice of established and up and coming destinations that travellers should be considering in 2012. London Greenwich makes the cut this year alongside the Catalan city of Girona in Spain, Mexico's exotic Yucatan Peninsula, the hip city of Beirut in Lebanon re-emerging after decades of civil war, and Chonqging, China, often cited as the world's biggest metropolis. Frommer's writers and editors said 2012 is London Greenwich's time to shine as it celebrates Olympic events, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and becomes a Royal Borough. London's brand new cable car is also set to launch in Greenwich next year. Frommer's praised historic Greenwich's ability to continually reinvent itself since it emerged as a naval centre in the 18th Century and highlighted the remarkable baroque facades by architects such as Wren, Hawksmoor and Vanbrugh along the waterfront as well as the beautiful views one can take in across the oldest of the Royal parks, Greenwich Park to the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf. Mark Henshall, Regional Editor, said: "Every year Frommer's authors and editors put their heads together to determine the best travel inspirational experiences for the year ahead. Our annual list draws from our individual local knowledge, passion and expertise, and is a great resource for travellers searching for their next extraordinary getaway. Our top picks offer smart and lesser known alternatives to overrun spots as well as emerging and rediscovered destinations that will wow you." New for 2012, Frommer's has also scoured the globe for destinations that match the interests of particular travellers. To name a few, Frommer's urges explorers to experience the rugged wilderness of Chile's Aysen region before proposed dams fuel industrial growth on its pristine rivers; cruise fans should add Tromso in Norway to their lists to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights; while travellers keen to tighten their purse strings should consider the Albanian Riviera next year as it has all the natural attractions of its Croatian counterpart but without the crowds and considerable expense. The list also includes the Frommer's Readers' Favourite destination, Turkey, which received 51% of the overall vote from the ten destinations up for nomination. Turkey beat South Africa to the top spot. In describing the win, Frommer's editors raved about Istanbul's unique positioning at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and the stunning coastlines of the Mediterranean coast. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Turkey on Sunday 23rd October does not dampen Frommer's enthusiasm for what the country has in store for 2012. Modern Turkey and its past incarnations have seen their share of natural and man-made challenges throughout the centuries. As the Frommer's Turkey author Lynn A. Levine puts it "... there is one undeniable common denominator, and that is that Turkey, and the Turkish people, know how to do hospitality." The historic buildings forming part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, it also incorporates the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and 17th-century Queen's House. Since earliest times Greenwich has had associations with the sea and navigation. It was a landing place for the Romans; Henry VIII lived here; the navy has roots on the waterfront; and Charles II founded the Royal Observatory in 1675 for "finding the longitude of places". The home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian since 1884, Greenwich has long been a centre for astronomical study, while navigators across the world have set their clocks according to its time of day. A painting of the Great Comet of 1843 that was created by astronomer Charles Piazzi Smyth. The Museum has the most important holdings in the world on the history of Britain at sea comprising more than two million items, including maritime art (both British and 17th-century Dutch), cartography, manuscripts including official public records, ship models and plans, scientific and navigational instruments, instruments for time-keeping and astronomy (based at the Observatory). Its British portraits collection is exceeded in size only by that of the National Portrait Gallery and its holdings relating to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson and Captain James Cook, among many other individuals, are unrivalled.- published: 31 Aug 2012

Greenwich Village (1944) full movie
The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show''.

There simply are no more in existence. This incomparable estate, 40 feet above mean high water, owns two islands and altogether they have a total of almost a mile of shorefront, amazing views, extraordinary walled gardens, unbelievable privacy, a 75 foot pool with a spa, a beach, a grass tennis court, a superb greenhouse, a stone carriage house and a cottage in a totally convenient and quiet location. The 1800 foot driveway with beautiful cobblestone gutters winds through woods and lawns to the entrance. Two remarkable stone towers bracket the front door and the upstairs balcony. The grand paneled entrance room and stairway rises three stories with a fireplace and goes front to back to the wonderful screened or glassed porch with open panoramas of Long Island Sound. The main rooms have 12 foot ceilings, including the living room with a beautiful carved fireplace and French doors to the huge solarium with a coffered ceiling with plaster detailing and three exposures, the paneled library with a fireplace, a huge bow window with curved glass and bookcases, and the dining room with a fireplace, a tracery ceiling and paneling in rich oak with columns. It adjoins the kitchen and a wing with an enormous skylight, as well as the long oval family room with a fireplace and a large bow window. A wide hall leads to the main bedrooms including a master suite with a fireplace, a sleeping porch, a dressing room and a marble bathroom. The five other bedrooms include two oval bedrooms (one with a fireplace), one with a fireplace and a sleeping porch, and two with access to a large balcony. The third floor has four bedrooms and a staff wing plus stairs to a huge top floor room. The lower level includes the original staff kitchen with a dumb waiter, a sitting room, a wine cellar, one of several laundries and ample room for activities. The pool house is octagonal with dressing and bath facilities adjoining the 75 foot heated pool with 14 sides, an enormous spa and large terraces -- the views are a treat, as they are from the grass tennis court with an inviting viewing pergola. The stone carriage house complete with a clock tower, and a large upstairs with lovely water views has ample garage space for cars and farm equipment, plus the milking stalls from its original days, and there are magnificent greenhouses. The three bedroom stucco and shingle cottage at the gate has a charming porch. The property is zoned two-acre residential and the mainland is subdivided into two tax lots of 20 and 30.6 acres, both of which are suitable for further subdivision. The opportunity to own this extraordinary 50 acre waterfront estate in sought after Greenwich is unique and will not present itself again; so close to New York City, the airports, and all transportation.- published: 19 Nov 2013

The Pope of Greenwich Village.Cop shit his pants
The Pope of Greenwich Village is a 1984 American film starring Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Geraldine Page, Kenneth McMillan and Burt Young. In an Italian neighborhood of Greenwich Village, cousins Charlie, a maître d' with aspirations of someday owning his own restaurant, and Paulie, a schemer who works as a waiter, have expensive tastes but not much money. Paulie gets caught skimming checks, and he and Charlie are both fired. Now out of work and in debt, Charlie must find another way to pay his alimony, support his pregnant girlfriend Diane, and try to buy a restaurant. Paulie comes to Charlie with a "can't-miss" robbery, involving a large amount of cash in the safe of a local business. Charlie reluctantly agrees to participate, and they manage to crack the safe with help from an accomplice, Barney, a clock repairman and locksmith. But things go sour, resulting in the accidental death of police officer Bunky Ritter, who had been secretly taping "Bed Bug" Eddie Grant. Charlie soon learns that the money they stole belongs to Eddie. The mob figures out that Paulie is involved, and not even his Uncle Pete, part of Eddie's crew, can help him. One of Paulie's thumbs is severed as punishment. Diane leaves Charlie and takes his money to support their unborn child, while Paulie is forced to work as a waiter for Eddie. He gives the mob Barney's name but initially refuses to identify Charlie as the third man involved. However, under pressure, he is forced to rat on his cousin. Barney leaves town and Charlie mails him his cut of the loot. And when Charlie makes $20,000 on a horse, things begin to look up. Charlie prepares for a showdown with Eddie, armed with a copy of the tape that the police officer made. But at the last moment, Paulie puts lye in Eddie's coffee. Then he and Charlie casually walk away from Greenwich Village.- published: 20 Jan 2014
