The Battle of Crécy (26 August 1346) was an important English victory during the Edwardian phase of the Hundred Years' War. Coupled with the later battles of Poitiers (also fought during the Edwardian phase) and Agincourt, it formed the first of three decisive English successes during the conflict.
After the Battle of Sluys in 1340, King Edward III of England returned to England where he had three million arrows manufactured as well as new silver coins minted and all other kinds of war materials prepared. He planned to invade France, and this time to get off the boats. Most sources agree that he also brought several primitive cannons that probably fired stones or iron shot.

On July 12, 1346 King Edward and his army of mostly longbow archers as well as his eldest son, the "Black Prince" Edward arrived at the coast of France and disembarked at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue without much resistance. They spent the next month marching towards Paris, pillaging as they went, before turning north and along the Somme River, pursued by a much larger French army led by King Phillip VI. With the French army was a large contingent of Italian mercenary crossbow archers who were all called Genoese by the French. Blind King John of Bohemia and a group of knights also joined the French army. King John would perish in the next day's battle. King Phillip would be wounded.
The English stopped and rested for a day near the village of Crecy, selecting a low ridge to form a line with two wedges of archers at each end, and the dismounted knights massed in the middle. The next day the French caught up and began to arrive in the plain at the foot of the hill. It was August 26, 1346.
After a brief thunderstorm, the crossbow archers bowstrings were wet, and loose. The English archers had kept their bows covered and dry during the rain. The French King ordered his army not to advance, and to stop and rest for the night before offering battle the next day. But French knights started to advance and even King Phillip changed his mind when he saw how impudent the English looked up on the small hill they occupied. So he ordered the crossbow archers to advance and begin firing. He told them to advance without first having their large wooden shields brought up from the rear of the army. So they advanced and released their first volley into the English lines without protection. Some sources say that they discharged their bolts early because they were startled by the firing of English cannons, which did little damage, but were an unfamiliar sound and sight to people of the time.
The crossbow bolts fell short of the English, and in response the English longbows began to unleash volley after volley of deadly arrows that fell into the line of Italian crossbow archers. The Italians broke and fled, until they ran into the lines of French knights behind them, who were disgusted by the archers' cowardice. The French mounted knights charged the English lines in wave after wave, and the so did the dismounted men at arms. The English archers disabled the knights before they ever reached the English, by shooting the French knights' lightly armored horses instead of the knights, whose armor rendered them mostly impervious to the arrows.
Finally by evening King Phillip was persuaded to flee with some retainers, as the battle was lost for the French.

THE LONGBOW
The incredible English victory at the Battle of Crecy (part of the Hundred Years War with France) would never have happened without the might of the longbow. Just a simple piece of wood, and yet it could be made into a deadly weapon. At the time of the Hundred Years War the English were superb longbow men, spending long hours practising and possessing great discipline. It is hard to image now the effect of over 7,000 archers shooting all at once!
Mike Loades, series presenter, undertakes a number of experiments to establish how effective longbows would have been -- how far could they shoot and what damage they could do -- particularly against a French knight on horseback in full plate armour. We learn about the 'reflexed bow', a construction style that gave longbows great velocity, and that the Port of London was the centre of the bow-making industry.
Working with a group of inexperienced volunteers, Mike demonstrates that it was possible to train a group of longbow men very quickly and so raise an army at short notice. Some longbow men were part of the cavalry, which gave them a high status. Working a horse and a longbow required great skill and Mike demonstrates some of the manoeuvres used.
The French had 12,000 mounted knights in armour at the Battle of Crecy. The English had 2,500 mounted archers and 5,000 archers on foot, and this highly mobile force was key to the English victory. When the French charged at the English, the arrow storms would have been terrifying. Although protected by armour, many of the horses would have fallen, and without a horse, the French knights were an easy target for the English foot soldiers. Indeed, there were over 10,000 French casualties at Cressy and the French nobility was annihilated.

The battle was fought on 26 August 1346 near Crécy in northern France. An army of English, Welsh and allied troops from the Holy Roman Empire led by Edward III of England engaged and defeated a much larger army of French, Genoese and Majorcan troops led by Philip VI of France. Emboldened by the lessons of tactical flexibility and utilisation of terrain learned from the earlier Saxons, Vikings and the recent battles with the Scots, the English army, despite being heavily outnumbered by the French, won a decisive victory.[1][2]
The battle saw the rise in power of the longbow as the dominant Western European battlefield weapon, whose effects were devastating when used en-masse. Crécy also saw the use of some very early cannon by the English army, shot being found on the battlefield centuries later during archaeological digs. The combined-arms approach of the English, the new weapons and tactics used, which was far more focused on the infantry than previous battles in the middle-ages (whose predominant focus was the heavily armoured knight) and the killing of incapacitated knights by peasantry after the battle has led to the engagement being described as "the beginning of the end of chivalry".

The English army 10-15,000 strong was led by King Edward III & his eldest son Prince Edward 'the Black Prince' who was Knighted the night before the battle, while the French army being roughly twice the size of that of the English was led by King Philip VI of France. Both sides had a few allies & mercenaries, the English had a few Holy Roman Empire knights with them, the French had the blind king John of Bohemia with some of his men, Louis I Count of Flanders with his men, some Spanish from the Kingdoms of Navarre & Majorca & some 15,000 Genoese Crossbowmen. King Edward III positioned his army in 3 divisions of knights & men-at-arms on a highground with longbowmen on the flanks & in the middle in a 'V' shape. They used sharpened stakes infront of the bowmen & also spread caltrops infront of their positions. The French sent the Genoese Crossbowmen first and it was worse than hopeless for them, many of them got killed by the superior longbows & by the English cannons, the rest retreated & were trampled down by the French knights who were behind them. When the French knights & men-at-arms charged up hill they were being slaughtered by hails of arrows, their charge was futile & suffered heavy casualties in hand-to-hand combat. In other words it was a disaster for the French, who lost the flower of their nobility & knights even King Philip VI himself was wounded & most of those around him got killed. 1000s of French lay dead & the remaining French had no choise but to break & flee. Some 2,200 heraldic coats were taken from the field as war-booty along with weapons, armor, prisoners etc.

Almost 80 years into the Hundred Years War, on Friday, October 25, 1415, "Saint Crispin's Day," Henry V of England met the French army led by the Constable Charles d'Albret in Northern France, near the present-day town of Azincourt.

At Agincourt, estimates are that the English were outnumbered from 2 to 1 to as much as 4 to 1. Most of the English were archers and dismounted knights, while most of the French were mounted knights. Some crossbow mercenaries were part of the French force too. But they had a limited range compared to the long bow, and also took a lot longer to reload and re-shoot their weapon.
Before the battle, which Henry was actually trying to avoid, he ordered the archers to each find and sharpen both ends of a six-foot wooden stick. These were then hammered into the soft ground of the plain where the battle ultimately took place. It rained the night before the battle, and there was mud and soft Earth all throughout the battleground. The wooden stakes were pointed outwards, towards the French lines. When the French knights on horseback charged the English archers, many of the horses would not advance through the thicket of sharpened points. Archers picked off horses and knights from a distance and at close range. French knights and men at arms were trapped by their heavy armor in the mud, becoming easy prey for the outnumbered English. French who had not been killed or stuck in the melee fled.
Some say that the French knights had issued threats that, if they caught any archers from the English side, they would cut off their inside fingers, so they could not pull back a bow string. To taunt these French knights, the English archers held up their middle fingers to show they still had them.
Noble French prisoners, who could have been sold for rich ransoms, were ordered killed after the French retreat. Henry was worried these prisoners would rise up and attack the English from behind if, or when, another wave of French knights appeared to engage Henry. The massacre is not portrayed in this brick film.
August 26 2013 UPDATE: To all the dislikes which Analytics says are coming from France! We know this video is unfair and inaccurate. There might be, in this first division, about eight hundred men at arms, two thousand archers, and a thousand Welshmen. They advanced in regular order to their ground, each lord under his banner and pennon, and in the centre of his men. In the second battalion were the Earl of Northampton, the Earl of Arundel, the Lords Roos, Willoughby, Basset, St Albans, Sir Lewis Tufton, Lord Multon, the Lord Lascels, and many others; amounting, in the whole, to about eight hundred men at arms, and twelve hundred archers. On July 12, 1346 King Edward and his army of mostly longbow archers as well as his eldest son, the "Black Prince" Edward arrived at the coast of France and disembarked at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue without much resistance. They spent the next month marching towards Paris, pillaging as they went, before turning north and along the Somme River, pursued by a much larger French army led by King Phillip VI. With the French army was a large contingent of Italian mercenary crossbow archers who were all called Genoese by the French. Blind King John of Bohemia and a group of knights also joined the French army. King John would perish in the next day's battle. King Phillip would be wounded.
The English stopped and rested for a day near the village of Crecy, selecting a low ridge to form a line with two wedges of archers at each end, and the dismounted knights massed in the middle. The next day the French caught up and began to arrive in the plain at the foot of the hill. It was August 26, 1346.
After a brief thunderstorm, the crossbow archers bowstrings were wet, and loose. The English archers had kept their bows covered and dry during the rain. The French King ordered his army not to advance, and to stop and rest for the night before offering battle the next day. But French knights started to advance and even King Phillip changed his mind when he saw how impudent the English looked up on the small hill they occupied. So he ordered the crossbow archers to advance and begin firing. He told them to advance without first having their large wooden shields brought up from the rear of the army. So they advanced and released their first volley into the English lines without protection. Some sources say that they discharged their bolts early because they were startled by the firing of English cannons, which did little damage, but were an unfamiliar sound and sight to people of the time.
The crossbow bolts fell short of the English, and in response the English longbows began to unleash volley after volley of deadly arrows that fell into the line of Italian crossbow archers. The Italians broke and fled, until they ran into the lines of French knights behind them, who were disgusted by the archers' cowardice. Just a simple piece of wood, and yet it could be made into a deadly weapon. At the time of the Hundred Years War the English were superb longbow men, spending long hours practising and possessing great discipline. It is hard to image now the effect of over 7,000 archers shooting all at once!
Mike Loades, series presenter, undertakes a number of experiments to establish how effective longbows would have been -- how far could they shoot and what damage they could do -- particularly against a French knight on horseback in full plate armour. We learn about the 'reflexed bow', a construction style that gave longbows great velocity, and that the Port of London was the centre of the bow-making industry.
Working with a group of inexperienced volunteers, Mike demonstrates that it was possible to train a group of longbow men very quickly and so raise an army at short notice. Some longbow men were part of the cavalry, which gave them a high status. Working a horse and a longbow required great skill and Mike demonstrates some of the manoeuvres used.
The French had 12,000 mounted knights in armour at the Battle of Crecy. The English had 2,500 mounted archers and 5,000 archers on foot, and this highly mobile force was key to the English victory. When the French charged at the English, the arrow storms would have been terrifying. Although protected by armour, many of the horses would have fallen, and without a horse, the French knights were an easy target for the English foot soldiers. Indeed, there were over 10,000 French casualties at Cressy and the French nobility was annihilated.

King Edward III positioned his army in 3 divisions of knights & men-at-arms on a highground with longbowmen on the flanks & in the middle in a 'V' shape. They used sharpened stakes infront of the bowmen & also spread caltrops infront of their positions. The French sent the Genoese Crossbowmen first and it was worse than hopeless for them, many of them got killed by the superior longbows & by the English cannons, the rest retreated & were trampled down by the French knights who were behind them. When the French knights & men-at-arms charged up hill they were being slaughtered by hails of arrows, their charge was futile & suffered heavy casualties in hand-to-hand combat. In other words it was a disaster for the French, who lost the flower of their nobility & knights even King Philip VI himself was wounded & most of those around him got killed. 1000s of French lay dead & the remaining French had no choise but to break & flee. Some 2,200 heraldic coats were taken from the field as war-booty along with weapons, armor, prisoners etc.

Both sides had a few allies & mercenaries, the English had a few Holy Roman Empire knights with them, the French had the blind king John of Bohemia with some of his men, Louis I Count of Flanders with his men, some Spanish from the Kingdoms of Navarre & Majorca & some 15,000 Genoese Crossbowmen. King Edward III positioned his army in 3 divisions of knights & men-at-arms on a highground with longbowmen on the flanks & in the middle in a 'V' shape. They used sharpened stakes infront of the bowmen & also spread caltrops infront of their positions. The French sent the Genoese Crossbowmen first and it was worse than hopeless for them, many of them got killed by the superior longbows & by the English cannons, the rest retreated & were trampled down by the French knights who were behind them. When the French knights & men-at-arms charged up hill they were being slaughtered by hails of arrows, their charge was futile & suffered heavy casualties in hand-to-hand combat. In other words it was a disaster for the French, who lost the flower of their nobility & knights even King Philip VI himself was wounded & most of those around him got killed. 1000s of French lay dead & the remaining French had no choise but to break & flee. Some 2,200 heraldic coats were taken from the field as war-booty along with weapons, armor, prisoners etc.

Almost 80 years into the Hundred Years War, on Friday, October 25, 1415, "Saint Crispin's Day," Henry V of England met the French army led by the Constable Charles d'Albret in Northern France, near the present-day town of Azincourt.

At Agincourt, estimates are that the English were outnumbered from 2 to 1 to as much as 4 to 1. Most of the English were archers and dismounted knights, while most of the French were mounted knights. Some crossbow mercenaries were part of the French force too. But they had a limited range compared to the long bow, and also took a lot longer to reload and re-shoot their weapon.
Before the battle, which Henry was actually trying to avoid, he ordered the archers to each find and sharpen both ends of a six-foot wooden stick. These were then hammered into the soft ground of the plain where the battle ultimately took place. It rained the night before the battle, and there was mud and soft Earth all throughout the battleground. The wooden stakes were pointed outwards, towards the French lines. When the French knights on horseback charged the English archers, many of the horses would not advance through the thicket of sharpened points. Archers picked off horses and knights from a distance and at close range. French knights and men at arms were trapped by their heavy armor in the mud, becoming easy prey for the outnumbered English. French who had not been killed or stuck in the melee fled.
Some say that the French knights had issued threats that, if they caught any archers from the English side, they would cut off their inside fingers, so they could not pull back a bow string. To taunt these French knights, the English archers held up their middle fingers to show they still had them.
Noble French prisoners, who could have been sold for rich ransoms, were ordered killed after the French retreat. Henry was worried these prisoners would rise up and attack the English from behind if, or when, another wave of French knights appeared to engage Henry. The massacre is not portrayed in this brick film.

The Battle of Crecy saw the era of Knight thugs on horseback meet its end due to the development of the English longbow. However, I know this history so lets team up my mercenary with France and change fate by simply going around the longbow encampments nailing the base commander and calling it a day. Where in the blue hell is multiplayer menu? I actually have two digital copies of the game and hope to play online couch co-p if such a thing exists... it does. Where is the commanding of multiple squads??? (NOT YET!) I'm a big fan of the new level system because it doesnt force you to be certain unit types to level them up. Its all thrown together in a big pot of xp that you can divvy out. You can even just buy levels. This is great because in the original you might be 30 hours in and ge... -
