There\'s an eerie sense of calm to Kabul ahead of Saturday\'s elections, as government security forces place the city under lockdown in an attempt to neutralise any Taliban attacks before they happen. The first round of the presidential elections, back in April, were surprisingly peaceful- at least within the Kabul security bubble- but the Taliban have publicly vowed to disrupt Saturday\'s runoff, warning voters to stay away from polling stations. Rumors are swirling around the capital of Taliban assault teams already in place and armed with heavy weapons and magnetic bombs, and in response army, police and intelligence service checkpoints have sprung up on every intersection in Kabul, choking the city\'s already dense traffic into a packed stream of honking horns and eye-watering exhaust fumes. The Taliban threat is very real: only last week, the frontrunner, presidential candidate Dr Abdullah Abdullah narrowly survived a coordinated suicide bomb attack which killed three of his staff and a number of bystanders, reducing his armoured car to a shrapnel-peppered hunk of charred steel.

Since then, Abdullah\'s electioneering has been restricted to his fortified Kabul compound, with streams of tribal elders and representatives of the country\'s interest groups different filing into his media centre throughout the day to listen to near-identical speeches and announce their support for his presidential bid. VICE NEWS was granted a brief audience with Abdullah, in which he brushed aside the suggestion that the sudden jihadist blitzkrieg on Iraq heralded a glimpse of Afghanistan\'s future after ISAF troops pull out.

Fighting Back Against ISIS: The Battle for Iraq (Dispatch 1)
  • Order:
  • Duration: 9:08
  • Updated: 17 Jun 2014
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Last week, the extremist militant Sunni group — Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), along with other Sunni militias and former Baathist party members, seized control of large parts of Iraq, including Mosul, the nation's second largest city. In many places, the Iraqi army barely put up a flight. Soldiers dropped their weapons and fled, whether because of fear, incompetence, or internal sabotage. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have become internally displaced after fleeing the fighting or the potential for potential Iraqi air strikes. As ISIS and the other groups continued to fight their way to Baghdad, gruesome videos of brutal executions began to surface. Iraqi army units stationed near Baghdad, as well as Shiite militias, have pledged to not give up so easily. Many say the conflict was brewing for a while, and that ISIS, along with some of the other groups, has had some semblance of control in Sunni areas for quite some time. They point to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki's increasingly sectarian polices and crackdowns on Sunnis as having provoked the events of the last week, and fear this could be the start of a devastating civil war. In the north, Kurdish forces known as the peshmerga have used the opportunity to seize disputed areas, territories that the Kurds long felt belonged to them but the government was hesitant relinquish. An informal border now exists between ISIS dominated areas and Kurdish territory. There has only been sporadic clashing, as neither group seems determined to break the strange detente. New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]
New Horizons: Passport to Pluto and Beyond - Documentary [HD]

Mission Overview: Why Go to Pluto ? Planetary exploration is a historic endeavor and a major focus of NASA. New Horizons is designed to help us understand worlds at the edge of our solar system by making the first reconnaissance of Pluto and Charon - a "double planet" and the last planet in our solar system to be visited by spacecraft. Then, as part of an extended mission, New Horizons would visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune. Science at the Frontier Our solar system contains three zones: the inner, rocky planets; the gas giant planets; and the Kuiper Belt. Pluto is one of the largest bodies of the icy, "third zone" of our solar system. The National Academy of Sciences placed the exploration of the third zone in general - and Pluto-Charon in particular - among its highest priority planetary mission rankings for this decade. New Horizons is NASA's mission to fulfill this objective. In those zones, our solar system has three classes of planets: the rocky worlds (Earth, Venus, Mercury and Mars); the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune); and the ice dwarfs of the Kuiper Belt. There are far more ice dwarf planets than rocky and gas giant worlds combined - yet, no spacecraft has been sent to a planet in this class. The National Academy of Sciences noted that our knowledge of planetary types is therefore seriously incomplete. As the first mission to investigate this new class of planetary bodies, New Horizons will fill this important gap and round out our knowledge of the planets in our solar system. Ancient Relics The ice dwarfs are planetary embryos, whose growth stopped at sizes (200 to 2,000 kilometers across) much smaller than the full-grown planets in the inner solar system and the gas giants region. The ice dwarfs are ancient relics that formed over 4 billion years ago. Because they are literally the bodies out of which the larger planets accumulated, the ice dwarfs have a great deal to teach us about planetary formation. New Horizons seeks those answers. Binary Planet Pluto's largest moon, Charon, is half the size of Pluto. The pair form a binary planet, whose gravitational balance point is between the two bodies. Although binary planets are thought to be common in the galaxy, as are binary stars, no spacecraft has yet explored one. New Horizons will be the first mission to a binary object of any type. A Mission with Impact The Kuiper Belt is the major source of cometary impactors on Earth, like the impactor that wiped out the dinosaurs. New Horizons will shed new light on the number of such Kuiper Belt impactors as a function of their size by cataloging the various-sized craters on Pluto, its moons, and on Kuiper Belt Objects. Pluto and the Kuiper Belt are known to be heavily endowed with organic (carbon-bearing) molecules and water ice — the raw materials out of which life evolves. New Horizons will explore the composition of this material on the surfaces of Pluto, its moons and Kuiper Belt Objects. The Great Escape Pluto's atmosphere is escaping to space like a comet, but on a planetary scale. Nothing like this exists anywhere else in the solar system. It is thought that the Earth's original hydrogen/helium atmosphere was lost to space this way. By studying Pluto's atmospheric escape, we can learn a great deal about the evolution of Earth's atmosphere. New Horizons will determine Pluto's atmospheric structure and composition and directly measure its escape rate for the first time. The Need to Explore As the first voyage to a whole new class of planets in the farthest zone of the solar system, New Horizons is a historic mission of exploration. The United States has made history by being the first nation to reach every planet from Mercury to Neptune with a space probe. The New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt - the first NASA launch to a "new" planet since Voyager more than 30 years ago - allows the U.S. to complete the reconnaissance of the solar system. VICE News Interviews Abdullah Abdullah: Elections in Afghanistan (Dispatch 1)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News There's an eerie sense of calm to Kabul ahead of Saturday's elections, as government security forces place the city under lockdown in an attempt to neutralise any Taliban attacks before they happen. The first round of the presidential elections, back in April, were surprisingly peaceful- at least within the Kabul security bubble- but the Taliban have publicly vowed to disrupt Saturday's runoff, warning voters to stay away from polling stations. Rumors are swirling around the capital of Taliban assault teams already in place and armed with heavy weapons and magnetic bombs, and in response army, police and intelligence service checkpoints have sprung up on every intersection in Kabul, choking the city's already dense traffic into a packed stream of honking horns and eye-watering exhaust fumes. Since then, Abdullah's electioneering has been restricted to his fortified Kabul compound, with streams of tribal elders and representatives of the country's interest groups different filing into his media centre throughout the day to listen to near-identical speeches and announce their support for his presidential bid. VICE NEWS was granted a brief audience with Abdullah, in which he brushed aside the suggestion that the sudden jihadist blitzkrieg on Iraq heralded a glimpse of Afghanistan's future after ISAF troops pull out. "Those are very serious events," Abdullah said, "[but] in Afghanistan the majority of the people have rejected the Talibanization of the country. They don't have a place, and I am sure that with the legitimacy of the future government based on transparent elections, the state institutions will be strengthened. I am not concerned about that scenario here in Afghanistan. Security is a challenge for the country and will be a challenge for the country, and support from the international community will be needed. There are problems, there are challenges, but there are ways to deal with it." Asked whether he saw a negotiated settlement between an Abdullah administration and the Taliban who'd just tried to assassinate him, he remarked that "the end result, the projection of the end of this conflict, of course there needs to be a negotiated settlement. When is it that it is possible to achieve it, that's a different issue. That does not mean we should not take serious steps and genuine steps to pursue negotiations, but that does not take one side; it also takes the other side. So, on the Afghan side I think genuine serious efforts for pursuing negotiations and offers should be made. At the same time we should protect our own citizens, we should strengthen the security of the country and pursue the programmes which is dealing with the priorities of the majority of the people, like governance, like the fight against corruption, rule of law, and delivering to the people the delivery of services." In practice, Afghanistan's central government has a shaky hold at best on much of the country, severely limiting its ability to provide any of the above aspirations outside major urban centres. But Kabul, buoyed, until recently, by an economic boom derived from aid money, expats and local corruption and secured like a fortress by its heavy foreign and Afghan military presence, presents a vision of what a semi-stable future Afghanistan might look like. A violence-free election will provide a major propaganda boost for the incoming government, and the security services have thrown vast resources at ensuring this outcome. In a bid to reassure the populace polling day will take place smoothly, Kabul's police chief summoned dozens of journalists on a tour of the city, cramming dozens of cameramen into police pickup trucks, which careered around the congested streets in a long convoy of blaring sirens and shakily-held camcorders, producing choking clouds of dust and the bewilderment of passersby.
