Iraqis attempt river crossing as militants take Mosul - BBC News
As many as 500,000 people have been forced to flee the Iraqi city of Mosul after Islamist militants effectively took control of it, the International Organization for Migration says. Troops were among those fleeing as hundreds of jihadists from the ISIS group overran the city and much of the surrounding province of Nineveh. Some civilians resorted to crossing the river Tigris without boats to escape the violence in Mosul. Paul Adams reports. Iraqi jihadists take over Mosul
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a jihadi group with links to Al Qaeda, took control of the Iraqi city of Mosul on Tuesday. The second largest city in the troubled country was overrun by militants, forcing Iraqi military forces to flee. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki vowed a strong response, but support for the leader is in question as he struggles to unite the differing Sunni and Shia factions. RT's Lindsay France discusses the surprise attack and the political situation in the country with retired Marine Corps Brig. Gen. David Reist. Fall of Mosul 'not completely innocent -- it serves Maliki'
Political danger is growing in Iraq with Nouri al-Maliki's failure to put a government together. He won Iraq's legislative elections in April -- but just barely. While the Shiite prime minister appears powerless to act amid violent divisions, Iraq's Sunni minority complains it is being marginalised. Just after the elections, Maliki said defiantly: "I consider the turnout in the parliamentary elections to be a slap in the face for the terrorists who wanted to impede the process, through violent acts which were repulsed by security troops, politicians and tribesmen." ISIS Takes Control Of Mosul, Iraq's Second Largest City Video
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham seized control of Mosul, which is the provincial capital of Ninewa and Iraq's second largest city, after five days of heavy fighting with Iraqi forces. Mosul is the second major city to fall to the former al Qaeda affiliate this year. Fighters from the ISIS took control of government buildings, including the provincial headquarters, as well as police stations and military installations inside and outside of the city, according to reports. Several police stations were torched by the ISIS. Some Iraqi soldiers and policemen are said to have shed their uniforms before fleeing their posts to avoid being captured and executed by ISIS fighters. The ISIS has raised the black flag of jihad and "announced over loudspeaker that they had 'come to liberate Mosul and would fight only those who attack them,'" the BBC reported. Usamah al Nujayfi, the speaker of Iraq's Council of Representatives whose brother is the governor of Ninewa, told Al Baghdadiyah Satellite Television that "the right and left sides of the city of Mosul as well as its districts and subdistricts have been completely occupied." Nujayfi also accused Iraqi security forces of abandoning their posts and leaving weapons, ammunition, and armored vehicles behind. "When the battle intensified inside the city of Mosul, these forces gave up their weapons and the commanders fled, leaving behind arms, armored vehicles, and locations for the terrorists," Nujayfi continued. "Mosul Airport and some aircrafts and command locations have fallen, not to mention arms warehouses. Prisons have been taken and the prisoners have been released." Some reports indicate that hundreds of prisoners have been freed. Nujayfi also warned that the ISIS fighters are "now heading toward Salahaddin Governorate," and that the villages outside of Al Shirqat "have been entirely occupied." It is unclear how many Iraqi soldiers, policemen, and civilians were killed in the latest round of fighting in Mosul. The ISIS began its assault on Mosul five days ago, when hundreds of fighters entered the city in pickup trucks and attacked government installations and security forces. ISIS fighters took control of several neighborhoods, but the military claimed that it beat back the jihadists and killed 105 fighters as they retreated. Yet the military said that 10 percent of Mosul remained under ISIS control. Eighteen security personnel were reported killed on the first day of fighting. Mosul was the last major city to serve as a bastion for the ISIS after the US and Iraqi forces launched counterinsurgency operations as part of the surge that began in 2007. By the time US forces left Iraq at the end of 2011, the ISIS was operating as terrorist cells in the city. Close proximity to Syria allowed the ISIS to continue operating in Mosul and the northwestern province of Ninewa. The ISIS began reasserting itself as the Syrian civil war picked up steam in the summer of 2011 and US forces withdrew from Iraq a few months later in December. Mosul is the second major city to fall completely under the control of the ISIS this year. At the beginning of January, the ISIS and allied tribal groups seized Fallujah, the second largest city in Anbar province. The ISIS immediately imposed sharia, or Islamic law. Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, also briefly fell under the ISIS' control, but Iraqi forces regained much of the city. Other smaller cities and towns in Anbar are under the ISIS' influence.............- published: 11 Jun 2014

Iraq Crisis: Militants Attack Tikrit After Taking Mosul - Iraq Islamists Force 500,000 To Flee Mosul More than 150,000 people have been forced to flee Iraq's second city of Mosul after Islamist militants effectively took control of it. Troops were among those fleeing as hundreds of jihadists from the ISIS group overran it and much of the surrounding province of Nineveh. Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki responded by asking parliament to declare a state of emergency to grant him greater powers. The US said the development showed ISIS is a threat to the entire region. US State department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the situation in Mosul was "extremely serious" and that the US supported "a strong, co-ordinated response to push back against this aggression". A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "gravely concerned" at the situation. He encouraged the Iraqi government and the Kurdish regional government to cooperate in restoring security to region. Iraq crisis: ISIS parade captured Iraqi military vehicles in Mosul
A group from the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams stage a parade of American Humvee patrol cars seized from a collapsing Iraqi army in the two days since its fighters drove out of the desert and overran the northern metropolis. The black-clad and masked Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) fighters waved the black flag of the Islamic State and flashing the "V" sign with some shouts "Towards Baghdad". Witnesses saw ISIS fly two helicopters over the parade, apparently the first time the militant group has obtained aircraft in years of waging insurgency on both sides of the Iraqi-Syrian frontier. It was unclear who the pilots were, but Sunnis who served in the forces of Saddam Hussein have rallied to the insurgency. Since Tuesday, black-clad ISIS fighters who do not recognise the region's modern frontiers have seized Mosul and Tikrit, Saddam's home town, and other towns and cities north of Baghdad. The army has evaporated in the face of the onslaught, abandoning bases and US-provided weapons. Security was stepped up in Baghdad to prevent the Sunni militants from reaching the capital, which is itself divided into Sunni and Shi'ite neighbourhoods and saw ferocious sectarian street fighting in 2006-2007 under US occupation. Children armed with rifles parade in ISIS convoy through Mosul
Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/1bmWO8h Gun-toting children paraded through the streets of Mosul in Iraq yesterday. An ITV News video shows an ISIS convoy travelling through the city, with the militants showing off the weapons and vehicle they seized as the Iraqi army fled. The footage shows two small boys, one armed with an assault rifle, which has a telescopic sight attached. Humans Rights Watch says that in Syria, ISIS has already recruited young children as 'snipers' - this could be an indication that the Iraq conflict may see the same. Extremist Islamist groups like ISIS are said to have targeted children for recruitment by providing military training in school settings through free schooling campaigns, that include weapons training and giving them dangerous tasks, including suicide bombing missions. Human Rights Watch who have interviewed children who fought with groups such as the Free Syrian Army, the Islamic Front coalition and ISIS, says the militants have used children as young as 14 in support roles. IRAQ militants control second city of Mosul | BREAKING NEWS - 10 JUNE 2014 For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS Iraq's prime minister has asked parliament to declare a state of emergency after Islamist militants effectively took control of Mosul. Nouri Maliki acknowledged "vital areas" of the country's second largest city had been seized. Overnight, hundreds of armed men seized local government's offices and police stations before taking control of the airport and the army's headquarters. About 150,000 people are thought to have fled the city. Authorities have set up camps for them in three nearby towns. Elsewhere, a double bomb attack in the central town of Baquba killed at least 20 people, police and medics said. The blasts, targeting a funeral procession, also wounded 28 people. In the past week, the jihadist Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and its allies have carried out major attacks on cities and towns in western and northern Iraq, killing scores of people. 'Maximum alert' The BBC's Jim Muir in Beirut says militants from ISIS have been informally controlling much of Nineveh province for months, imposing tolls on the movement of goods and demanding protection money from local officials. After five days of fighting, they took control of key installations in Mosul, which has a population of about 1.8 million. Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, who is struggling to form a government in the wake of the April elections, has vowed to drive the ISIS "terrorists" out of mainly-Sunni Mosul in short order. He is unlikely to succeed soon. He made similar vows when Sunni militants took over Falluja, west of Baghdad, in January, and they are still there. It is not yet clear whether it is only ISIS involved in the Mosul takeover. In Falluja and its province, Anbar, Mr Maliki has clearly alienated many Sunni tribesmen and others, creating fertile soil for the radicals.
