Martin Creed: Work No. 1357, MOTHERS
In early August 2012, London-based artist Martin Creed (British, b. 1968) debuted an ambitious new sculpture created especially for the MCA plaza. Made up of white neon lettering, "Work No. 1357, MOTHERS" is the largest kinetic sculpture Creed has created to date: measuring forty-eight feet wide and more than twenty feet tall, it steadily rotates a full 360 degrees. This substantial public artwork is a companion piece to the artist’s yearlong residency at the MCA, Martin Creed Plays Chicago, which blurs the lines between the inside and the outside of the museum and furthers Creed’s engagement with the city at large.
Creed often uses language in his work, spelling out unassuming words or common phrases. In some cases he works with neon on a modest scale. "Work No. 845 (2007)," for example—on view concurrently in the MCA’s first-floor lobby—reproduces the word “THINGS” in bright multicolored letters that are a few inches high. In contrast, the rotating neon sculpture Creed produced for the MCA plaza is intended to be monumental. As the word “MOTHERS” spins overhead, directly in front of the museum’s main entrance, it becomes a glowing presence that is both celebratory and imposing. It had to be large, Creed said, “because mothers always have to be bigger than you are” and because “it feels like mothers are the most important people in the world.”
Creed is one of the United Kingdom’s leading artists and was the winner of the 2001 Turner Prize. He lives and works in London and spends time in Alicudi, Italy. Creed’s work has been exhibited widely at a variety of international venues, and he has produced public projects throughout the world, including one in London in August 2012 to coincide with the Summer Olympics.

Jimi Hendrix Promo - Valleys Of Neptun
Das virtuos eingespielte Album präsentiert eine Sammlung von zwölf ausgezeichneten Songs, darunter die Cream-Coverversion "Sunshine Of Your Love", der Elmore James-Klassiker "Bleeding Heart" sowie die exzellente Hendrix-Kompositionen "Ships Passing Through The Night", "Lullaby For The Summer" und "Hear My Train A Comin'".
Weiterhin werden die vier Alben "Are You Experienced", "Axis: Bold As Love", "Electric Ladyland" und "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun" mit einer Bonus-DVD neu veröffentlicht. Die Bonus-DVD zeigt jeweils eine Dokumentation zum Album.

SHIFTS: How Did We Get Here, and What Comes Next?
In its current form, architecture is still a product of the Industrial Age, as is the idea that underpins it, namely that every change is an improvement. No profession is so imbued with the soap powder advertising optimism of ‘now better than ever’. But buildings also belong to the category of products on which financial capitalism thrived. Just as the millions of unpaid Facebook users ensure that Mark Zuckerberg is on his way to becoming the richest man in the universe, so all the (in this case paid) parties who make buildings, starting with architects, ensure that those who own the buildings become wealthier from it. At least, that’s how things worked until the recession. Because construction alone will not make you seriously rich.
- Hans Ibelings, SHIFTS
Nanne de Ru of Powerhouse Company and Hans Ibelings explore the themes of the exhibition in a far-reaching discussion with leading UK based practioners, at the forefront of conversations around global change and new economies, including worldwide urban development perspectives from Christopher Choa (AECOM) and fresh research on alternative economies and their implications for architecture, from Alice Fung (00:/, Hub Westminster). The conversation will be chaired by Peter Buchanan, author of the Architecture Review's recent 12 part series of essays exploring the future of architecture, The Big Rethink.
Are we now seeing the formal end of the Industrial Revolution, the tipping point from which the East takes the reins from the West? What have de-regulation and the changing role of credit done to the world’s built environment? Through exploration of these vital questions, the evening will also launch a new publication resulting from Ibelings and Powerhouse's research.

The Mighty Jerome. LIWI68
This film explores the turbulent life and career of the record-setting African-Canadian track and field star and member of the Order of Canada.
I must say this was a great honor to be involved in creative process with charles to ‘konceptual’ the official movie poster! Today is the Earthstrong of our beloved Brother, teacher and VISIONARY Harry Jerome. Had he lived he would be 70 years old today. Harry Winston Jerome was born on September 30, 1940 in Prince Albert, Sask., and moved with his family to British Columbia and the Vancouver area in 1951.
He was a talented athlete who excelled in a variety of sports, including baseball and football. But exceptional speed was his trademark and special gift, propelling him not only to success on the gridiron and baseball diamond, but also to the pinnacle of international athletics competition as one of the top sprinters of the day and one of the best to ever represent Canada.
His accomplishments came despite his enduring considerable racism as a youngster and as a competitor — testament to his courage and will to succeed despite barriers placed in his path.
At age 18 the North Vancouver sprinter broke the 31-year-old Canadian record for the 220-yard sprint – held by 1928 double Olympic gold medallist Percy Williams. A year later he emerged as an international sensation by equaling the world record for 100 metres by clocking 10.0 seconds at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Saskatoon. That effort marked the young Canadian as one of the sprinters to watch at the upcoming 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome.
But what should have been a promising Olympic debut for Jerome became instead the first of many difficult trials that served as a test of the athlete’s personal motto: Never Give Up. Jerome pulled a muscle in the 100-metre semi-finals in Rome and was out of the competition. Two years later, at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia, world record holder Jerome pulled up lame and finished last in the 100-yard final. The media lambasted him as “a quitter” even as tests confirmed he had suffered severely torn left thigh muscles that would keep him out of competition for all of 1963, with a possible prognosis of never again being able to compete.
He returned, however, in 1964 and was finally able to reap the benefit of his work, tenacity and considerable talent. At the Summer Olympics in Tokyo Jerome earned a bronze medal in the 100-metre final, rightfully earning his spot on the Olympic podium and a respected place among the ranks of the world’s fastest men. Two days later he finished fourth in the 200 metres, confirming his place among the great sprinters of his day while finally earning some grudging respect from Canadian media that seemed to relish in judging him harshly.
Two years later Jerome won the 100 yards final at the 1966 British Commonwealth Games in Jamaica, his first gold medal at a major international Games. That year he also set a world record of 9.1 seconds over 100 yards. In 1967 he also took gold at the Pan-American Games.
In 1968 he represented Canada at his third Olympic Games – an extraordinary feat in itself given that longevity in the sport was not what doctors were predicting when he suffered his first major injury back in 1960. He finished seventh in the Olympic final at Mexico City, confirming that despite the array of physical troubles and negative press that had plagued him over the years, he never gave up.
