A Brief History of Voyager
A Brief History of Voyager
The Voyager 1 spacecraft, after a 36-year journey, has been announced by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to have officially left the solar system and has become the first human-made object to reach interstellar space. Here is a brief history of the Voyager program, from its launch, exploration of the outer solar system and its exodus into interstellar space and how scientists at NASA were able to use Voyager 1 and 2 to discover enormous knowledge about the solar system and beyond. The fact that these spacecraft are still functioning after 35 years is a testament to the skill and ingenuity of the engineers and scientists who worked on the program.- published: 17 Sep 2013

NASA's Voyager 1 is in Interstellar Space
NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has traveled beyond our solar bubble and has entered interstellar space. During a NASA Headquarters briefing, the Voyager team assessing the data determined the craft is in a transitional region immediately outside the solar bubble where some effects from our sun are still evident. New, unexpected data indicate that Voyager 1 has been traveling through the plasma, or ionized gas, that originates in the space between the stars. The spacecraft is now bathed in interstellar plasma, the material ejected from the death of nearby stars millions of years ago. Speakers on the occasion were - Ed Stone- Voyager project scientist, California Institute of Technology; Don Gurnett - Voyager plasma wave investigation principal investigator, University of Iowa; Suzanne Dodd - Voyager project manager, Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Gary Zank, physics department chair, University of Alabama in Huntsville.- published: 12 Sep 2013

Voyager 1 Goes Interstellar: Solar System Boundary Passed
New data from NASA's Voyager 1 indicates the probe has left the influence of the Sun's bubble of charged particles and entered true interstellar space, after a 36-year odyssey through the Solar System, across more than 11,253,000,000 miles. -- Hear Sounds from Intestellar Space from Voyager here: http://goo.gl/iikSfV- published: 12 Sep 2013

Voyager Leaves the Solar System
Thirty-six years ago this month, on Sept. 5, 1977, the Voyager 1 spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. On September 12, 2013, NASA officially confirmed that Voyager 1 had reached the interstellar medium in August 2012. This makes Voyager 1 the first spacecraft to exit our solar system, a mark in history to be remembered forever.
