Meskel (Ge'ez: መሰቀል), in the Ethiopian Orthodox and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, is an annual religious holiday commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by Queen Helena (Saint Helena) in the fourth century. Meskel occurs on 17 Meskerem in the Ethiopian calendar (September 27, Gregorian calendar, or September 28 in leap years). "Meskel" (or "Meskal" or "Mesqel", there are various ways to transliterate from Ge'ez to Latin script) is Ge'ez for "cross". The festival is known as Feast of the exaltation of the holy cross in other Orthodox, Catholic or Protestant churches. The churches that follow the Gregorian calendar celebrate the feast on September 14.

ECCE HOMO! - John 19:1-5 in Arabic, Syriac, Ge'ez, Coptic (Sahidic) and Gothic

Again I use the bible as a source for different languages. This time it is the beginning of the Gospel of John up to Pontius Pilate's famous words "Ecce Homo". I mainly did this because I haven't uploaded anything in Syriac and Coptic so far except for the Lord's Prayer. And I also wanted to read some Gothic again. Different from my other videos on Ge'ez, I used the liturgical pronunciation here. The Coptic in this video on the other hand is different from how I've read it so far because it contains cryptophonemes, i.e. sounds that are not rendered by the script (e.g. the 'Ayn or emphatic consonants) but can be reconstructed through Middle Egyptian etymologies. I think many Coptic linguists would disagree about the existence of those cyrptophonemes in Coptic but I think it sounds good... gives it a harsh Northern African sound, that's why I included them.

With over 93,000,000 inhabitants,Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world, as well as the second-most populated nation on the African continent.
