Mexico coach Miguel Herrera confirms starting lineup vs. Netherlands
Carlos Salcido replaces Jose Juan Vasquez in El Tri's starting XI for the round of 16, while the rest of the squad remains the same from the three group-stage matches. Mexico coach Miguel Herrera named Carlos Salcido as Jose Juan Vazquez's replacement in the center of midfield for Sunday's round of 16 match against the Netherlands, with the rest of the team the same that started the past three games. MORE: Worst hairstyles | Beautiful people in Brazil Herrera admitted in Saturday's press conference that Salcido wouldn't give his side the same intensity in the center of the field as Vazquez, who is out due to a yellow-card suspension, but said his experience and timing would be important factors. Guillermo Ochoa once again starts in goal for Mexico, with Miguel Layun and Paul Aguilar the wing backs; Hector Moreno, Rafa Marquez and Francisco "Maza" Rodriguez are the center backs; Salcido will be in front of the them with Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado the box-to-box midfielders. Upfront, Oribe Peralta and Giovani dos Santos will continue their partnership, with Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez on the bench. Herrera declared it will be a difficult game and that it will be an honor to share the touchline with Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal, but added that he is sure El Tri will win. The Mexico coach also said the CONCACAF region deserves more respect on a world level after three teams from the confederation made the round of 16 at the World Cup. "CONCACAF has grown," he said. "It should stop being seen as weak. We're ready to fight toe-to-toe with other confederations." The former Club America manager also thanked Mexico fans for their support and declared that against the Netherlands in Fortaleza on Sunday, green-clad fans will outnumber those in orange. "Mexicans do the impossible to get to Brazil," stated Herrera. "I'm sure our fans will make us feel like the home side once again."- published: 29 Jun 2014

World Cup Picks: Netherlands vs. Mexico, Costa Rica vs. Greece Netherlands vs. Mexico (B1 vs. A2) 2 way line (90 minutes) -- Netherlands -0.5 (+120) Mexico +0.5 (-140) 3 way line (90 minutes) -- Netherlands (+120) Mexico (+230) Draw (+240) Outright Winner -- Netherlands (-200) Mexico (+175) Total -- Over 2.5 (+120) Under 2.5 (-140) Side: The Dutch finished off their perfect Group B campaign by picking apart a feisty Chilean side. What was surprising in the match was Holland's ability to play without the ball yet still look threatening for the entire 90 minutes. It was a side of the Netherlands that had yet to be seen and by most accounts was not in the toolbox. Now, moving forward, they must been viewed as a legitimate contender to reach at least the semifinal if not win the World Cup. Against Mexico they will head back to the offensive strategy that worked perfectly against both Spain and Australia. The return of Robin van Persie to the Dutch attack will free up Arjen Robben and allow the rest of the midfield to pick out passes forward or expose the wings. The Oranje have scored in just about every way possible so it will be difficult for Mexico to prepare for what is now a truly versatile side. The Netherlands will return to the high defensive line that worked so well early in the group stage and force Mexico to play with their backs against the wall all afternoon. El Tri have not shown much promise in the counter so the Dutch defenders should be able to join in on the attack. The Netherlands have shown no problems putting the ball in the back of the net, but they'll face a defense playing at a much higher level than that of which they went against in the group stage. The chances will come, but the same could have been said for Brazil against Mexico. Scoring on Guillermo Ochoa has turned into quite the feat. El Tri have been incredible defensively thus far in the tournament. It's almost unbelievable because Mexico struggled so mightily all the way through qualifying and now the troubles seem to have dissipated and they are playing some of the best soccer of tournament. The one problem is that they still look rather pedestrian going forward. A single goal against a poor Cameroon side, no goals against Brazil, and then three quick ones against Croatian side that that almost appeared to be in shock. El Tri will likely be faced with an opponent that is going to play a similar style to that in which they saw against the hosts, Brazil. Mexico earned a much needed point in that match but they were completely outplayed and it took one of the best goalkeeping performances in World Cup history to maintain the level score. The flurry of goals that sent Mexico came through were a direct result of Crotia's desperate approach to the second half of the final group stage match. Mexico must find a way to generate offense off the counter attack otherwise they will be buried by a Dutch team that comes in waves. Miguel Herrera has pulled every string perfectly thus far, but he has to make one more huge one if Mexico expect to get by the powerful Oranje. If Mexico start Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez it may expose the Mexican defense a little more than Herrera pleases, however, if Chicharito is relegated to the "super-sub" role Herrera usually prefers him in, they may not have enough firepower to get the ball past the high line of the Holland defense. Herrera has had a dream tournament as a manager thus far, but if he makes the wrong decision here, it will all be forgotten instantly. Pick: 90 minute bet -- Netherlands (+120) Times Germany's Coach Joachim Loew Was Over The Rain Total: The total of this match will rely on the decision Miguel Herrera makes on his tactical strategy. He has the option to attempt a defensive shell and try to keep the Netherlands out of the net like they did against Brazil, or he can try a more aggressive side and try to expose a Dutch defense that has been broken down multiple times during the tournament. While the match is tied the Dutch are going to play forward and they are going to have a back four whose heels will be on the positive side of the midfield line more often than not. The match will open up significantly the moment the first goal is scored, it's just a question of when it will come. Memo Ochoa has been so good thus far, but his luck is likely to run out at some point. If he's not near perfect, this match could be a goal scoring fest as the Dutch will see tons of space once the Mexicans choose to commit men forward. Pick: Over 2.5 goals (+125)- published: 29 Jun 2014

Recap: Netherlands vs. Mexico
Fortaleza, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted a penalty kick in stoppage time to lift the Netherlands to a 2-1 comeback win over Mexico in the round of 16 at the World Cup at the Estadio Castelao on Sunday. A 48th-minute goal from Mexico's Giovani dos Santos had El Tri on course for their first quarterfinal appearance since 1986. However, Huntelaar came off the bench with 15 minutes to play and set up the equalizing goal for Wesley Sneijder in the 88th minute before scoring from the spot four minutes into added time after Arjen Robben drew a foul on Mexico's Rafael Marquez inside the penalty area. The win moves the Dutch into the quarterfinals on Saturday, where they will face either Greece or Costa Rica. Mexico, meanwhile, has now been eliminated in the round of 16 at the last six World Cup tournaments. "I think that the team have played well this whole World Cup. We've achieved some very good things, but nobody can take away the bitter taste of this defeat," said Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera. "We did a good job but made mistakes, while the Netherlands did a great job to hold on, keep fighting and finally turn the scoreline around. But this wasn't the Dutch team everyone's been talking about, this is a side that's vulnerable and can be beaten. In physical terms, we never dipped, we were solid and we fought to the final whistle. In my view, my players were extraordinary." Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong limped off the field after just nine minutes, forcing head coach Louis van Gaal to burn an early substitution in extremely hot conditions. Mexico's Hector Herrera had the first good chance for either side when he rolled a shot just wide of the left post from inside the penalty area. Dos Santos tested Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen late in the first half with a shot from a tight angle that Cillessen kept out with his outstretched leg. However, Cillessen was picking the ball out of his net in the 48th when Dos Santos took the ball down off his chest and hammered a left-footed shot inside the right post past the diving Dutch netminder. Yet after scoring the goal, Mexico sat back and invited the Netherlands to come forward, leading to a number of good chances. Stefan de Vrij almost leveled the contest in the 57th minute when he turned a corner kick on goal from close range, only for Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa to parry the ball off the post. Sneijder saw a deflected shot go narrowly wide and Robben forced a good stop from Ochoa in the 74th after he danced past a defender to get into the box. But Mexico was unable to hang on as a corner kick was played to the back post for Huntelaar, who nodded the ball back to Sneijder for an emphatic first-time finish. The Netherlands had all of the momentum at that point, and Robben made a dangerous run into the area toward the end line. Marquez lunged in to make a tackle and he clipped Robben just enough to send the Dutchman to the ground. Referee Pedro Proenca pointed to the penalty spot, and Huntelaar stepped up and sent Ochoa the wrong way, sending the Oranje to the quarterfinals for the second successive World Cup. "I have to give credit to my players: I think they were in much better shape and much more focused than our opponents," Van Gaal said. "They never stopped believing, right to the end. They showed belief and a lot of confidence."- published: 29 Jun 2014

Netherlands vs Mexico - World Cup R16 match preview
Netherlands vs Mexico - World Cup R16 match preview
Netherlands and Mexico meet today for their round of 16 clash in the 2014 World Cup. The two quarter-finalists are already known, Brazil and Colombia. Netherlands did amazingly well in their group and won it, their display against Spain being particularly impressive, and the Mexicans have also overperformed and managed to beat Croatia in the decisive third-round match with a passionate and spirited performance. Netherlands already had a big test for this match as they played against another high-energy team, Chile, and winning the third-round clash 2-0. However, another such team, Australia, caused them problems in the second round. That means Netherlands didn't yet connect two good performances in this tournament but they might do so now as they have left the pressure of the group behind and now have to focus on winning instead of doing math and getting points. The Dutch definitely got more in store for the knockout stage. Mexico, on the other hand, look like they have reached the limit of their performances and that they can't do any better and the only question is will that be enough to knock Netherlands out. The Mexican pace and high tempo even caused Brazil a lot of problems, but then again Brazil seem to have a problem with the Mexican playing style and can't seem to beat this team. Mexico are playing in a 5-3-2 formation with three very good central midfielders and with the two amazing wingbacks Layun and Aguilar joining to make it a five-man midfield. It works very well, the central defenders are also very competent, with Rafael Marquez dictating play. The only problem for Mexico is that they haven't got world class strikers who can decide the match on their own, but although they can't change the course of the game they're good enough. There's a big question whether Guillermo Ochoa, the goalkeeper, can keep performing the way he did against Brazil and Croatia or was he just lucky as the strikers hit him with the ball every time. Louis van Gaal will again opt for the Dutch version of 5-3-2, his newest innovation that is trying to mimic what Mexico and some other teams are doing. With a difference that Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben are in offense here, making this team really dangerous. It's worth noting that those are the only two good players in this team, as Wesley Sneijder is past his prime, and the other players are mostly unknown and have backup roles in their respective clubs. Netherlands will live and die by the performance of their offensive duo, and it's a well-known fact Arjen Robben is winning the matches for Netherlands. If he doesn't do it, no one else will.- published: 29 Jun 2014
