At Least 38 Boko Haram Fighters Killed During Clashes
Nigeria's military says it has killed as many as 38 fighters from the armed Boko Haram group during operations in the northeast of the country. In a statement issued on Thursday, Colonel Mohammed Dole of the Nigerian army said the troops of 195 Battalion in Damboa "successfully repelled planned Boko Haram terrorists' attack" on residents and a military camp in Damboa, in Borno state. "In the early hours (0100 hours) of Thursday 9 January 2014, the insurgents attempted to attack Damboa to cause havoc and mayhem. "But due to timely information and gallantry displayed by the troops, the attack was repelled and inflicted heavy casualty on the terrorists," Dole said. While 38 fighters died, others fled with "various degrees of injuries", he said. "Combined ground troops and Nigerian Air Force aircraft are tactically pursuing the fleeing terrorists in the ongoing operation in the general area of Damboa and surrounding villages." Three vehicles were destroyed and one of them was found to have cylinders and improvised explosive devices. Weapons and ammunition, including machine guns, were also recovered. Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, discussing the army's operation from the northwestern state of Kaduna, said Thursday's offensive was the biggest military operation against Boko Haram this year. "The Nigerian government and army will say they are winning the war against Boko Haram. But what the Nigerians are asking is if the government is winning the war, why are these attacks happening?" The US deemed Boko Haram a "foreign terrorist organisation" in November. The group says it is fighting Western influence and wants to create an Islamic state in the country's mainly Muslim north since 2009. Nigeria's government last year imposed a state of emergency in Borno and two other states, Yobe and Adamawa, in an attempt to stop the violence. Attacks by the group killed more than 1,200 people between May and December. The UN released figures in December, thought to be the first independent fatality figure to have emerged since President Goodluck Jonathan sent in thousands of troops to crush the group in May. The toll included civilians, army personnel as well fighters killed by security forces repelling attacks.- published: 09 Jan 2014

Nearly Hundred People Kidnapped After Raid In Nigeria.
Suspected Boko Haram fighters have abducted 60 girls and women and 31 boys from villages in northeast Nigeria, according to witnesses and a vigilante commander. Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons, reporting from Bauchi in northern Nigeria, said on Tuesday the abduction happened over a three-day period - Thursday, Friday and Saturday - and took place in three villages about 60km from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state. "A viligante commander in the town of Damboa has confirmed that three villages have been attacked by insurgents and a total of at least 90 people, most of them young people around 60 females and at least 30 males [abducted]." he said. "It's unclear but there's also a report that four who tried to resist were shot." Doyin Okupe talks to Al Jazeera about failing to control Boko Haram Our correspondent said the region's police commissioner had said he had not received a formal report of the abductions but that was not unusual in Nigeria. A senior local councilor from Damboa local government told Associated Press news agency the abductions had occurred but requested anonymity because he was not authorised to give information to reporters. He said elderly survivors of the attack had walked about 25km to the relative safety of other villages. The Damboa council secretary, Modu Mustapha, said he could not confirm or deny the abductions. In a related development on Saturday, scores of Boko Haram fighters attacked four other villages close to Chibok, in Borno state, near the Cameroon border, from where hundreds of girls were kidnapped in April. Witnesses said at least 33 villagers were killed as well as six vigilantes and about two dozen Boko Haram fighters. On June 10, suspected Boko Haram fighters reportedly kidnapped at least 20 women from a nomadic settlement in northeast Nigeria. Those kidnappings were reported to have happened at a settlement near Chibok, with one local leader putting the number as high as 40. A local official said 40 young mothers were singled out and put into vehicles before being driven to an unknown location. Almost 300 girls were snatched from Chibok on April 15. While dozens of the girls managed to escape, 219 remain missing. The abductions sparked widespread protests around Nigeria and a global campaign calling for their rescue.- published: 24 Jun 2014

Dozens Of Women And Children Kidnapped Again In Nigeria.
More than 60 women and children have been abducted in northern Nigeria by suspected militant Islamists, residents and officials say. The abductions are said to have taken place during a series of raids over the past week on villages in Borno state. Dozens of people were killed in the attacks, and people have been fleeing the villages, a BBC reporter says. The Islamist group Boko Haram is still holding more than 200 girls it captured in Borno's Chibok town on 14 April. Boko Haram is demanding the release of its fighters and their relatives, in exchange for the girls. The government has rejected this. BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross says the latest abductions do not come as a surprise. Many remote villages in north-eastern Nigeria are extremely insecure and when Boko Haram fighters attack, they often spend hours looting and killing, he says. The abductions took place in the Damboa area, close to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State and the headquarters of Boko Haram until it was forced out by the military and vigilante groups. Kummabza was just one of the villages targeted, our correspondent says. One of the village's residents told BBC Hausa: "These Boko Haram insurgents just came in and raided entire villages. "They captured some women and children and burnt almost all the houses." The area's senator, Ali Ndume, told the BBC that some men had also been abducted. "They took them to Izge [a village], sorted them out, took away some females and males that are strong and left the elderly and the weak ones." He said it was still not clear exactly how many people had been taken away. A senior officer in the Damboa local authority told AFP news agency that some of the survivors, including women and children, had fled on foot to a village about 25km (16 miles) away. Meanwhile, security forces said gunmen raided two villages in Kaduna state in central Nigeria overnight, killing dozens. "Twenty-one people were killed in Karshi and 17 others were killed in Nandu," local government official Emmanuel Adamu Danzaria told the AFP news agency. It is not clear who carried out the attacks but the area has suffered from conflict between Christians and Muslims. Hundreds were killed in Kaduna following national elections three years ago.- published: 24 Jun 2014

Boko Haram strikes in the North East of Nigeria
The insurgent Islamist group Boko Haram has launched yet another attack in Damboa in Nigeria"s North East, killing 11 people. This latest attack is particularly worrying as it comes just hours after Nigeria's Defence Spokesperson had asked Nigerians, particularly those in the North East of the country to be calm as it was only a question of time before Boko Haram would be completely wiped out. Nigeria explosion: 21 killed after bomb attack on shopping centre ahead of Nigeria World Cup match against USA For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to Islamic extremists have been blamed for an explosion in a busy shopping centre in the capital of Nigeria which killed 21 people ahead of the country's World Cup match against Argentina, police have said. Witnesses said body parts were scattered around the exit to Emab Plaza, in Abuja's upscale Wuse 2 suburb. One witness said he thought the bomb was dropped at the entrance to the mall by a motorcyclist. All spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. Many shops at the mall have TV screens but it was unclear if the explosion was timed to coincide with the match, which started an hour later. Soldiers shot and killed one suspect as he tried to escape on a power bike and police detained a second suspect, Mike Omeri, the government spokesman for the insurgency, said in a statement. Billows of black smoke could be seen from a mile (kilometer) away, and police said 17 vehicles were burnt out in the blast. "I heard the explosion and (felt) the building shaking," said Shuaibu Baba, who had a narrow escape. He said he rushed downstairs to find that the driver who had dropped him a few minutes earlier was dead. "I asked the driver to come with me, and he said `No,' he would wait for me in the car." Police Superintendent Frank Mba said 17 people were wounded and 21 bodies were recovered. Omeri urged people to be calm and said the government was doing everything possible "to check the activities of insurgents." It is the latest in a series of violent attacks blamed on Islamic extremists. Nigerian security forces appear incapable of curtailing the near-daily attacks concentrated in the northeast, where Boko Haram extremists have their stronghold. On Tuesday night, extremists in the north-east attacked a military checkpoint and killed at least 21 soldiers and five civilians, witnesses and a hospital worker said Wednesday. A soldier who escaped said the militants also abducted several of his colleagues in the attack near Damboa village, 85 kilometers (53 miles) from Maiduguri, capital of Borno state. The extremists attacked in a convoy of more than 30 trucks armed with anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers and powerful submachine guns while the soldiers had only AK-47 assault rifles, said the soldier, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to reporters. He said he saw at least 16 of his colleagues gunned down before he ran away. A worker at Maiduguri's main hospital said he counted the corpses of 21 soldiers brought to the morgue. A federal intelligence officer also confirmed the attack, saying the soldiers were overrun. He also is not allowed to speak to reporters. A spokesman for vigilante groups fighting Boko Haram, Muhammed Gava, said the extremists also killed five elderly men in the village that has been deserted by most inhabitants. Parents Search for Abducted Nigerian Schoolgirls, Say 234 Still Missing
The parents of a large group of schoolgirls abducted by Islamist militants continue to search for their daughters. They claim that 234 are still missing, a figure much higher than authorities said had been kidnapped. Full Story: The parents of a large group of schoolgirls abducted by Islamist militants searched for their daughters in a remote forest, they told the state governor on Monday, adding that 234 were still missing, a figure much higher than authorities said had been kidnapped. Official figures put the number of abducted girls at 129 and by Saturday afternoon Borno state governor Kassim Shettima said 77 were still unaccounted for, while the other 52 had returned. Last Monday's mass abduction of teenage schoolgirls by Boko Haram from Chibok school, shocked Nigeria, a nation long used to brutal attacks on civilians in the north-east. It also underlined how powerless the military has become at protecting civilians in the areas of Africa's most populous country plagued by the insurgency, despite a state of emergency being declared almost a year ago. Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sinful", say they are fighting for a breakaway Islamic state in northern Nigeria, although they have increasingly targeted civilians instead of just security forces over the past year. Amina Shawok, one of the abducted girls, managed to escape. "We thought they were soldiers and they asked us to board a vehicle which was was headed towards Damboa and my friends and I jumped from the vehicle and ran back home because we realised they don't look innocent to us." "They trooped in around eleven, then they said they are army, let the children not run away, they will rescue them. After they bombed all everything, then they packed them back to ... they drove them before then they put them into a car and run out with them so this is what actually happened," said Galti Shettima a teacher at the school, adding, "Around 200 and, over 200 in fact, but now we have gotten around 42 students," when asked how many students had been abducted. Shettima Haruna the mother of one of missing girls said several parents had taken motorcycles into the Sambisa forest, a known Boko Haram hideout near the school where it is believed the girls were taken. "They can burn physical infrastructures but believe me, they can't destroy our soul," said Kashim Shettima, the Borno state governor after surveying damage at the school. The governor and other official did not comment on the discrepancy in the figures. Boko Haram's five-year-old struggle which has claimed the lives of thousands of people is now seen as the main security threat to Africa's leading energy producer, but attacks on civilians have worsened and become more gruesome this year. School raids seem targeted at deterring parents from giving their children a modern education. The kidnapping occurred the same day as a bomb blast, which Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekauhas has since claimed responsibility for, which killed 75 people on the outskirts of the capital Abuja. Boko Haram Insurgency: Ten Members Killed, 2 Camps Destroyed -- Army
The Nigerian Army declared on September 11, 2013, Wednesday that 10 members of the outlawed terrorist group, Boko Haram, were killed in an airstrike on two of their camps in Borno State. [Breaking News] Nigerian gunmen on rampage, kill 5 in northern Borno State
ABUJA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rampaging gunmen in northern Nigeria have launched deadly road attacks in northern Borno State, killing at least five people in the last two days, sources said on Tuesday. Five people were killed on Sunday when the gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, ambushed road users along Gwoza- Firgi Ngurosoya federal highway in the northern state, said Hamzat Yusuf, a survivor of the incident. On Monday, the Nigerian Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, launched a new strategy and change of tactics in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency in the attack-prone northeastern region, with a view to finally put an end to the reign of terror in the West African country. But the same day, a group of attackers ambushed motorists along Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu road in the northeastern state, abducting drivers and passengers plying the road. They also set ablaze a Toyota Hilux truck and two other trucks loaded with oranges, another source told a reporter in Maiduguri, the state capital. "We have fears that the gunmen might have killed the abductees, " the source said. According to Musa Usman, another eyewitness of Monday's attacks, a number of terrorists were seen driving from their enclave in the Sambisa Games Forest to the highway. The suspected terrorists barricaded the road and conducted their operation in a most cruel manner, Musa said. "They set ablaze three vehicles," he noted. A military source who confirmed the attack said the mouthpiece of the Nigerian Army in the state was compiling its report on the issue before issuing an official statement. Based in Borno State, the Boko Haram sect, which proves to be the biggest security threat in the West African country, had claimed responsibility for several attacks in which more than 1, 500 people, including women and children had been killed since 2009 when it launched violent attacks in northern Nigeria. Irked by the carnage, the military had recently intensified its fight against the sect. Last week Monday, the military authorities confirmed that 24 insurgents died during an exchange of fire between security forces and suspected terrorists in a pre-dawn attack on Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. Boko Haram seeks to enshrine the Islamic Sharia law into the constitution and declared war against Western education in Nigeria. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/xinhua/2013-12-11/content_10783284.html- published: 11 Dec 2013
