Min or Miin (simplified Chinese: 闽语; traditional Chinese: 閩語; pinyin: Mǐn yǔ; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Bân gú; BUC: Mìng ngṳ̄) is a broad group of Chinese varieties spoken by over 70 million people in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian as well as by migrants from this province in Guangdong (around Chaozhou-Swatou, or Chaoshan area, Leizhou peninsula and Part of Zhongshan), Hainan, three counties in southern Zhejiang, Zhoushan archipelago off Ningbo, some towns in Liyang, Jiangyin City in Jiangsu province, and Taiwan. The name is derived from the Min River in Fujian.
There are many Min speakers among overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia. The most widely spoken variety of Min outside Fujian is Hokkien (which includes Taiwanese and Amoy).
The Min homeland of Fujian was opened to Chinese settlement by the defeat of the Minyue state by the armies of Emperor Wu of Han in 110 BC. The area features rugged mountainous terrain, with short rivers that flow into the South China Sea. Most subsequent migration from north to south China passed through the valleys of the Xiang and Gan rivers to the west, so that Min varieties have experienced less northern influence than other southern groups. As a result, whereas most varieties of Chinese can be treated as derived from Middle Chinese, the language described by rhyme dictionaries such as the Qieyun (601 AD), Min varieties contain traces of older distinctions. Linguists estimate that the oldest layers of Min dialects diverged from the rest of Chinese around the time of the Han dynasty. However, significant waves of migration from the North China Plain occurred:
Southern Min, or Min Nan (simplified Chinese: 闽南语; traditional Chinese: 閩南語; pinyin: Mǐnnányǔ; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Bân-lâm-gí/Bân-lâm-gú), is a branch of Min Chinese spoken in certain parts of China including southern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, Hainan, and southern Zhejiang, and in Taiwan. The Min Nan dialects are also spoken by descendants of emigrants from these areas in diaspora.
In common parlance, Southern Min usually refers to Hokkien. Amoy and Taiwanese Hokkien are both combinations of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou speech. The Southern Min dialect group also includes Teochew, though Teochew has limited mutual intelligibility with Hokkien. Southern Min is not mutually intelligible with Eastern Min, Cantonese, or Standard Chinese.
Southern Min dialects are spoken in the southern part of Fujian, three southeastern counties of Zhejiang, the Zhoushan archipelago off Ningbo in Zhejiang, and the Chaoshan region in Guangdong. The variant spoken in Leizhou, Guangdong as well as Hainan is Hainanese and is not mutually intelligible with standard Southern Min or Teochew. Hainanese is classified in some schemes as part of Southern Min and in other schemes as separate.
Mandarin (i/ˈmændᵊrɪn/; simplified Chinese: 官话; traditional Chinese: 官話; pinyin: Guānhuà; literally: "speech of officials") is a group of related varieties of Chinese spoken across most of northern and southwestern China. Because most Mandarin dialects are found in the north, the group is also referred to as the "northern dialect(s)". When the Mandarin group is taken as one language, as is often done in academic literature, it has more native speakers (nearly a billion) than any other language.
A northeastern-dialect speaker and a southwestern-dialect speaker may have difficulty communicating, except through the standard language. Nonetheless, there is much less variation across the huge Mandarin area than between the non-Mandarin varieties of southeast China. This is attributed to the greater ease of travel and communication in the North China Plain compared to the more mountainous south, combined with the relatively recent spread of Mandarin to frontier areas.
The capital has been within the Mandarin area for most of the last millennium, making these dialects very influential. Some form of Mandarin has served as a national lingua franca since the 14th century. In the early 20th century, a standard form based on the Beijing dialect, with elements from other Mandarin dialects, was adopted as the national language. Standard Chinese, which is also referred to as "Mandarin", is the official language of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan (Republic of China) and one of the four official languages of Singapore. It is also one of the most frequently used varieties of Chinese among Chinese diaspora communities internationally.

My name is Liang Cheng Chia and I am Taiwanese. I was born in Kaohsiung in 1991, but I moved to Vietnam at the age of three with my parents. I came to the USA for high school when I was fourteen, and I am currently at the University of Pennsylvania for college. Taiwanese is important to me because I speak it with my grandmother, and with my dad most of the time as well. My interests include playing guitar, singing, and basketball. After college I hope to make some money and eventually help Taiwan out!

Mandarin Chinese is widely known as the standard chinese language while Hokkien, Taiwanese dialect known as min-nan is one of the dying language. My explanation of the Hokkien history and sound difference of Mandarin chinese to Hokkien is to show the difference of a Chinese dialect. Just a quirky little thing I recorded in Shantou 汕头 for the micro video site Weishi 微视. The first 5 seconds are in Mandarin, the next two phrases are in Chaoshan dialect. Chaoshan (or Chaozhou / Teochew dialect) is very distinct from the Cantonese spoken in the rest of Guangdong province and is more closely related to the Southern Min dialect common in Fujian and Taiwan. Chaoshan dialect preserves many vocabulary and pronunciations from archaic Chinese that have been lost in modern dialects such as Mandarin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teochew_dialect

Here's hoping that this makes learning Taiwanese a little bit easier. The next video will demonstrate Taiwanese tone changes. Something to keep in mind: this is the government standard Taiwanese romanized pinyin system, meaning that only small children will know it since most adult Taiwanese speakers are illiterate in Taiwanese and it only recently started being taught in schools. You won't be able to ask people questions using what you've learned in this video, but hopefully it will provide a framework by which you can start knowing what to listen for in Taiwanese tones.
