Nigerian army kills 150 Boko Harem militants
Army spokesman says 150 fighters and 16 soldiers killed in attack on camp in Borno state. A military strike on a Boko Haram camp in Nigeria's northeast region last week killed 150 of the outlawed group's fighters and 16 soldiers, an army spokesman has said. The army's offensive against the armed group came on September 12, after local media reported that Boko Haram had ambushed a group of soldiers in the same area, killing 40 and leaving dozens of others missing. Military officials were not available to comment on the reported Boko Haram ambush, speaking only about the purported military strike. "It was a highly fortified insurgent camp with heavy weapons in [northeastern] Borno State," army spokesman Ibrahim Attahiru said on Wednesday, adding that the camp was in the Kasiya forest. "The army raided the camp on September 12. Some 150 Boko Haram terrorists were killed, while the military lost 16 soldiers. Nine soldiers are still missing," he said. Military shutdown Borno was placed under a state of emergency in mid-May. The military shut down the mobile phone network in the region to block the armed group from coordinating attacks. With the communication network switched off, details of attacks have been slow to emerge and difficult to verify. Residents have been largely unreachable, with military statements forming the main source of information in the ongoing offensive against Boko Haram.- published: 18 Sep 2013

Nigeria military discovers location of missing girls
And finally,... turning to Africa. The Nigerian military says it knows the location of the more than 200 schoolgirls that were kidnapped by the Islamist group... Boko Haram. Paul, is this the breakthrough that authorities need to get them back? The answer to that question is a bit more complicated. Even if the alleged military intelligence is sound,... most officials think any direct raid to rescue the girls would be too dangerous and not worth the risk. It's been seven weeks since Boko Haram militants abducted hundreds of girls in the northeast of the country. Since then,... international teams of experts have been dispatched to aid the Nigerian government in locating the girls. In a televised statement, Nigeria's military chief Alex Badeh said he knew where the girls were but did not give any further details. "We have al Qaeda in West Africa. I believe it 100 percent because I know people from outside Nigeria are in the war fighting us, they want to destabilize our country and some people in this country are standing with the forces of darkness. Now we must save our country." The government was reportedly close to a deal to rescue the girls for a prisoner exchange... but it was called off at the last minute. Since the girls were captured, at least 4-hundred-70 civilians have been killed by Boko Haram, which says it is fighting to establish an Islamic state. Alright Paul.... Thanks for that update. We'll see you back... in just about two hours.- published: 27 May 2014

Shell won't stop gas flaring- fueling climate change
30-second TV ad to run during the lead-up to the landmark Wiwa v. Shell trial in US federal court in which oil giant Shell will answer to charges that it conspired with the Nigerian military to brutally suppress a popular nonviolent movement of the Ogoni people opposed to its environmental degradation of their homeland in the Niger Delta. One of the charges Shell faces is colluding with the Nigerian military government to bring about the execution of nine Ogoni community leaders, including acclaimed author and environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa.
For nearly fifty years Shell has been flaring gas in Nigeria. These huge dirty, smoky plumes of pollution roar constantly across the Niger Delta. They affect the health of the local communities, they poison the air and light up the night sky. The flares have also been one of the biggest single contributors globally to climate change over the decades.

Wiwa v. Shell Campaign Video
On May 26, 2009, oil company Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) will stand trial in federal court in New York for complicity in egregious human rights abuses in Nigeria.
Evidence demonstrates that Shell colluded with the Nigerian military in attacks that led to murder and torture, and destruction of villages throughout the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta. Shell also colluded with the military government to bring about the arrest, torture, and execution of community activists who led a powerful movement to resist the environmental degradation and human rights abuses accompanying Shell's operations in their land.
On November 10, 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa, an acclaimed writer and leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), was hanged along with eight other Ogoni leaders, after a trial before a military tribunal that was condemned around the world as a sham. Ken Saro-Wiwa’s last words were: “Lord take my soul but the struggle continues.”

Shell Death Rope - In Memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa
On the 9th of November 2011 at a Shell-sponsored awards ceremony in the swanky corporate offices of the CBI (Britain’s biggest business lobby group), young entrepreneurs are looking towards a bright future.
Sixteen years ago, Shell made sure that Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other young Nigerian activists had no future. On 10th November 1995, Shell was complicit in their execution at the hands of the Nigerian military government for campaigning against the devastation of their homeland the Niger Delta by oil companies, in particular Shell.
And every day, all over the world – from building dodgy pipelines in Rossport, Ireland, to mining the world’s most polluting oil from the Canadian tar sands – Shell’s oil exploration and extraction activities undermine our collective future by pushing us ever closer to the brink of climate catastrophe. At the same time, it rakes in billions in profit every month, while the rest of us struggle to get by.
Shell doesn’t want us to remember these horrific things. So it channels a miniscule fraction of its obscene profits into sponsoring events like Livewire – not to mention most of the major arts and cultural institutions in London.
That’s why we’re here tonight: to remember – and to resist.
Nigeria: Shell’s dirty secret
The hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa and his Ogoni colleagues – whose only crime was to speak out for environmental and social justice – caused shock and outrage around the world. But whatever we might like to think, the human rights abuses perpetrated by Shell continue to this day. Shell’s routine payments to armed militants exacerbate armed conflict, and oil spills and gas flaring continue to devastate the fragile environment of the Niger Delta and the lives of the people who live there. But resistance continues as well; the UN has issued a damning report on the ecological impact of oil spills in Ogoni, and Shell was recently forced to admit liability and pay out millions of pounds in compensation for two massive oil spills after a lawsuit filed in London.
Sponsorship: buying us off
Sponsorship of events like Livewire is one of the most important ways Shell tries to protect its reputation and buy our acceptance. By sponsoring a social 'good' like an award to help young entrepreneurs, the oil giant is able to represent itself as a responsible organisation, and distract our attention from its environmental and social crimes around the world. By being here tonight, we strike a blow to Shell’s precious brand, chip away at Shell’s powerful position in our society, and move towards the day when Big Oil – like Big Tobacco – is no longer seen as a socially acceptable.
Remember climate change?
Climate change may have disappeared from the news recently, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is already claiming 300,000 lives a year. Glaciers, permafrost and sea ice are disappearing. Sea levels are rising, seasons changing and extreme weather becoming more extreme. As temperatures rise, we’ll see more flooding, more drought, more disease, more famine and more war, creating hundreds of millions of refugees and causing the destruction of entire ecosystems and species.
We can’t afford to forget about climate change – or the fact that companies like Shell are at the heart of the problem.

ShellOutSounds perform "Riddle of the Niger Delta" at South Bank in protest at Shell sponsorship
Musical campaign group, ShellOutSounds, are performing a series of actions at Shell-sponsored arts events to highlight the human rights, ecological and democratic abuses of the oil corporation.
They ask why arts bodies like the South Bank Centre are associating themselves with such philistine trans-nationals, and their performances and leafletting aim to undermine the subliminal advertising that Shell relies on through its ever-present logo on concert programmes and promotional material.
Highlighting that Shell cynically sponsor the arts as a cheaper and more effective alternative to expensive advertising, they compare the tiny donation given to the South Bank against the huge sums given to the Nigerian military to keep control over people who have lost their land to pollution and ecological devastation.
The footage was recorded at a rehearsal on the 21st and at the performances on the 22nd April 2013.
Leaflets were handed out to the audience (there to see Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra), and feedback from the onlookers was overwhelmingly positive, with several asking how they can help the campaign to stop the South Bank from entering into these sordid arrangements.
The security head engaged in dialogue with the protestors and agreed to feedback the reactions of punters and to facilitate further contact and discussion with the South Bank management.
