ZZ Top’s guitar and bass tech, Elwood Francis, explains the ins and outs of the newest guitars and basses that Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill have out on the road for 2015.
Dusty Hill’s new No. 1 bass matches Billy Gibbons’ No. 1 guitar, and both are chambered John Bolin creations. Dustie Waring has been a longtime PRS user and recently was honored with his own signature model based on the company’s popular Custom 24 model. He opted for a Floyd Rose bridge, a mahogany body with a carved maple top, a thin maple neck with an ebony fretboard and the production model came with his signature DiMarzio humbuckers. (Recently, Waring switched from DiMarzio to Seymour Duncan and his now using prototype signature humbuckers on his #1.) Every BTBAM song is tuned to C# and both Dustie and Paul use custom gauge D'Addario strings: .011, .014, .021 (wound), .032, .044, .056.

Ousley—who’s been maintaining the Wilson sisters’ gear (and making them mean cups of coffee) for more than 20 years—walked us through everything from Ann’s custom Martin acoustics to Nancy’s vintage SG and Tele, while Bartock and Rothchild shared their cool customized instruments.

Wayne Sermon plays several different BiLT guitars throughout the set. These offset beauties are highly customized with features Sermon specifically needs to create certain sounds from ID albums. His No. 1 is a gold-plated Volaré loaded with a pair of Lindy Fralin Twangmaster humbuckers.

John Fogerty’s main road guitar is a late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul goldtop with a wraparound bridge and its original P-90 pickups that really punch through the mix.
Used also as much as the goldtop on the 2015 Fogerty tour, this stock late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul Custom “Black Beauty” is in remarkably good shape, all things considered.
Made by Phil Kubicki (builder of the famous Ex Factor bass from 1983), all three versions of Fogerty’s iconic “bat guitar” feature an authentic Louisville Slugger brand and Strat-style electronics—a 5-way selector and a volume and two

Not many bands can claim as much influence on today’s hard rock and metal scene as the makeup-wearing, blood-spitting, pyro-shooting foursome. PG caught up with current guitarist Tommy Thayer, along with Francis and Michael Berger, to dig into all the axes (in some cases, literally), effects, and amps that the band brought out on their 2014 tour with Def Leppard.
Tommy Thayer is a longtime Les Paul man and brings several on the road with him. A Custom Shop ’59 Standard with Seymour Duncan JB pickups sees most of the action. Gibson had just delivered a new white Les Paul Custom that could see some con

The new designs are called the “Peeler” guitar and bass, because of the paint-peeling look, which is a laminate sticker design that was inspired by the peeling finish of a ’56 Precision bass that was damaged in a flood. All of Hill’s basses are ’50s slab-body Precision basses that feature Babicz bridges and stacked Seymour Duncan Precision reissue pickups. The bridge pickup in Gibbons’ T-style is a Cream T Billy Gibbons signature Banger and Mash.
Gibbons’ current encore guitar is “Lil Red,” a ’61 Reissue Les Paul SG with a disconnected sideways tremolo. Francis says he disabled it because it’s a tuning nightmare, but he left it visually intact for the mojo. The bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and the stock neck pickup is disconnected. Gibbons uses his signature Dunlop Rev. Willy’s Mexican Lottery strings (.007, .009, .011, .020, .030, .038) on all of his guitars.

Touring lead guitarist Dave Catching, guitarist/frontman Jesse Hughes, and bassist Matt McJunkins were gracious enough to chat about their setups before the band's sold-out show at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI, on 9/10/15.
Catching quickly became friends with luthier Gabriel Currie who opened is Echopark Guitars shop across from the band’s rehearsal studio. Currie, a big fan of the guitarist and his many bands, built a replica of a 1958 Gibson Flying V that Catching uses throughout most EODM sets because “it plays perfect and never goes out of tune.” He strings up all his guitars with Ernie Ball Slinkys .010–0.48. Also, he and Hughes play the same open-G tuning all night—G-G-D-G-B-D.
Loyal to one brand, boogiemaster frontman/guitarist Jesse Hughes plays nothing but Maton 6-strings live. The one on the left is a custom-made MS500 that features lightning bolts instead of f-holes and hotter-wound humbuckers that allow Hughes to not use any pedals because they get him right to the edge where clean and distorted meet. The silverbust axe on the right is another custom-made creation—this is a baritone version of Maton’s MS T-Byrd that the Austrailian company gifted Hughes when they heard he recorded some baritone tracks on the just-released album Zipper Down. (The MS T-Byrd also features a single lightning bolt and hotter pickups.)

Tessa Jeffers chatted with the man of many bands, Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse, just before the band performed at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium. Morse sticks with the signature gear he designed: Ernie Ball Music Man axes and Engl amps.
Morse has a boat full of signature axes, but it all started with the Ernie Ball Music Man that he’s been playing since he designed it in 1986—this guitar remains his No. 1 favorite guitar of all time. Morse modeled it after a Frankenstein Telecaster that he made from both Fender and Gibson parts early in his career. The Ernie Ball Music Man Steve Morse has a unique HSSH configuration with signature DiMarzio pickups and a complex switching system.
Morse designed his second wave signature model 20 years after the first, hence the name Ernie Ball Music Man SM-Y2D. It has a flame-maple top, and he favors this Y2D with a red and purple tinted finish and Floyd Rose while playing with Deep Purple on tunes like “Smoke on the Water.” The Y2D has one less single-coil than the first generation Steve Morse signature model, making for an HSH configuration with a multi-pull switch for an option to use the humbuckers together. Morse strings his standard-tuned axes up with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys (.009–.042) and uses .011s on guitars tuned to dropped-D.

Earlier this year Waggoner moved on from PRS and developed a signature guitar with Ibanez—the PWM100 Paul Waggoner signature model that has a Wizard III neck and comes with Mojotone PW Hornet signature pickups. Waggoner describes the sig axe: “It’s like the S-series guitars Ibanez has been putting out for years, but a little thicker than a stock S-guitar. It has a super lightweight swamp ash body. It’s a pretty bright-sounding wood. I designed some pickups with Mojotone that we’re calling the PW Hornets. They highlight the brightness of the guitar without overdoing it. The bridge pickup has a ceramic magnet that gives me that punch I need for the high gain stuff. The neck pickup is a totally opposite approach: It has an alnico magnet and a friendlier sound. The guitar will come stock with those pickups. They sound good in other guitars, too—we put them in mahogany guitars, and they sounded great. It just so happens that when we were trying to dial them in, we were using my swamp ash Ibanez as the reference. It’s a very bright-sounding guitar, and you can’t just throw any pickups in there. Mojotone did a good job of dialing in the perfect balance.”

Premier Guitar’s Shawn Hammond met with Ann and Nancy Wilson’s guitar tech, Jeff Ousley, lead guitarist Craig Bartock, and bassist Dan Rothchild before Heart’s show at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 21, 2015.
One of Nancy Wilson’s coolest road guitars this time around is a ’63 Telecaster Custom with Sperzel locking tuners that she uses for “Straight On,” “Even It Up,” and some Paul McCartney covers. She also carries two Martin HD-35 Nancy Wilson signature dreads, as well as a Martin DCPA1 with a Fishman Aura system that she uses for “Alone.” All her acoustics (and Ann’s) use FU-Tone titanium bridge pins. Nancy also brings three or four Gibson Nighthawks—which she co-designed with Gibson—in various tunings. She uses an early-’90s version for Led Zeppelin covers, and an F-tuned one for Robin Trower’s “Day of the Eagle.” She’s also road-testing a new Epiphone version of the Nighthawk with a prototype Trem King cam-based vibrato. Nancy borrows Ousley’s Duesenberg semi-hollowbody (given to him by Elvis Costello), and her single-pickup, Bigsby-equipped ’68 Gibson SG is her go-to guitar for the smash hit “Barracuda.” A TV Jones Spectra Sonic is her axe of choice for Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way” and Zep’s “Misty Mountain Hop.” Both Bigsby vibratos feature Vibramate String Spoilers.
Like her pedalboard, Nancy’s amp rack resides offstage. A Peavey-era Budda Superdrive 30 II head is her main amp, and a Fender ToneMaster serves as a backup. Each head drives its own Orange 4x12 cab loaded with 30-watt Celestion speakers.
Ousley is in charge of both cable management and pedal switching for Nancy Wilson. Her offstage board starts with a Whirlwind A/B selector, an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, a Way Huge Swollen Pickle, an ancient Ibanez flanger, and a Budda Zenman OD/Boost. A Voodoo Lab Pedal Power supplies the juice, and channel switcher pedals for each of Nancy’s heads round out the board.

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Mother’s Day 2015, Slipknot guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root took some time before their somewhat hometown show and hung with PG to talk about signature guitars, tube heads, and the handful off effects they need to punish arenas each night.
Mick Thomson’s Gear
GUITARS
Mick Thomson is a creature of habit—give him a few of his Ibanez MTM signature guitars packed with his Seymour Duncan EMTY Blackout pickups and he’s a happy dude. Each one of his guitars features a mahogany body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard.
As far as he’s concerned, the best guitar he has out on the road right now is his white-and-black “storm trooper” Ibanez MTM that’s kept tuned to dropped-B. According to Thomson, it’s perfect for rhythm work and can stand up against any other 6-string in his collection for leads. Nearly all of 2008’s 'All Hope is Gone' and the bulk of the rhythm material for last year’s '.5: The Gray Chapter' was done with the storm trooper. For this run, the band is primarily using two tunings and he uses a different set of D’Addario EXL117 strings for each one. For dropped-A tunings, he goes with .011–.058 and for dropped-B tunings he goes with .012–.068. Thomson recently worked with Dunlop to create a custom Jazz III pick made of a graphite composite because he feels they’re slicker, harder, and doesn’t make any scraping or scratching sounds when they wear down.
#7’s backup to the storm trooper is the very first prototype he got for his signature line back in the early 2000s.
Thomson starts the night out with this Oakland Raiders-themed Ibanez MTM that’s tuned to dropped-A for “Sacrastrophe.”
Thomson’s newest signature model features a carbon-fiber cap on the body and headstock and is tuned to dropped-A.
All of Thomson’s Audio-Technica wireless packs on his guitars are protected by Trojan condoms to keep them from getting wet from water, beer, sweat, and blood.

Premier Guitar hung with guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and tech Shane Johnson of Imagine Dragons before their sold-out show at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Sermon showed off a bevy of golden guitars and vintage Vox amps while McKee gets down with Lulls, Sadowskys, and a custom Stambaugh.
Each guitar is strung up with Elixir .011–.052 strings and Sermon uses Dunlop 88 mm 50th Anniversary Gold nylon picks.
Sermon’s BiLT Relevator is finished in shoreline gold and features both an MXR Carbon Copy and BiLT’s own fuzz circuit built into the body along with a Sustainiac in the neck position. Sermon can control the parameters of the effects via a wealth of buttons, switches, and controls that are accessible on the front of the guitar. There’s a Pedaltrain Volto on his strap that supplies power to the pedals via the stereo cable. He keeps this guitar tuned a half-step down from standard.

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/JohnFogertyBandRR
John Fogerty’s main road guitar is a late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul goldtop with a wraparound bridge and its original P-90 pickups that really punch through the mix.
Used also as much as the goldtop on the 2015 Fogerty tour, this stock late-’60s or early-’70s Gibson Les Paul Custom “Black Beauty” is in remarkably good shape, all things considered.
Made by Phil Kubicki (builder of the famous Ex Factor bass from 1983), all three versions of Fogerty’s iconic “bat guitar” feature an authentic Louisville Slugger brand and Strat-style electronics—a 5-way selector and a volume and two tone knobs—along the body’s upper edge.
When Fogerty wants the first CCR album’s vibe, he plays this custom 1997 Rickenbacker with three “toaster” pickups and a Bigsby vibrato.

Gibson had just delivered a new white Les Paul Custom that could see some considerable onstage time. Thayer’s black Les Paul Classic houses the classic Kiss pyro behind the headstock. When he needs some midrange honk, he reaches for a Custom Shop Gibson Explorer decked out in silver sparkle.

Article and photos: http://bit.ly/HalestormRR
Halestorm invited Premier Guitar to their secret rehearsal lair in Nashville, where, surrounded by walls of speakers and drenched in seizure-inspiring lights, Lzzy Hale and Joe Hottinger took a break to geek out over some spectacular gear. Hale with white-on-white Gibsons and Marshalls, Hottinger covering every sonic combination, the Grammy-winning rockers dished the dirt on their two-guitar assault.
Lzzy Hale’s Gear
Guitars
Undoubtedly, Hale’s No. 1 is her 2014 Lzzy Hale Signature Explorer with Gibson ’57 Classic pickups, an ebony fretboard featuring big block inlays, and a bound body. This sexy spaceship of a guitar is cloud white with gold hardware and is tuned to dropped-D. Perhaps equally cool is her 2014 Gibson EDS-1275 doubleneck, also with ’57 Classics. This 12-string combines a standard SG neck up top with a baritone to bring the thunder down under. Lastly is a stock 2009 Joan Jett Signature Melody Maker. All are strung with Dunlop Nickel Wound Light/Heavy.
Amps
Hale is a no-nonsense woman, happy with the simple things, like a 2013 Marshall JCM800 special made for Lzzy in her signature white and gold. The Marshall drives two matching white 1960 Vintage 4x12 cabs. As a backup she keeps a 2013 Marshall JCM800 at the ready.
