Project 2: Friends Forever The main Cambridge English Centenary Competition for Schools 2013 entrants are Ms. Brodzinska's (Ms. B) six Form 5 (Year 11) EAL students, who are the main characters in Ruthin School's production of 'School Friends' based on the popular TV sitcom 'Friends'. The video is a complete episode (including bloopers!) titled 'Friday the 13th' and shows a not so typical day at Ruthin School, but you'll have to watch and see why. All other students featuring in the video had a supporting role and an opportunity to be involved in the project. These were EAL students from all year groups (Year 8-13) and various nationalities with an age range of 11-19 years old (there are currently no EAL students in Year 7). The filming, re-working of lyrics for the theme tune, transposing of music and writing of the screenplay was done by the students under the guidance of Ms. B and some help from the music department and friends who know how to edit! We had lots of fun reading, writing, listening and speaking in English while working together on this project. We learnt not only lots of English, but a lot about making a film, including storyboarding and camera angles. In preparation for this project, we completed the following ten activities: 1. Discussed 'What makes a good friend?; vocabulary on describing appearance and character. 2. Wrote newspaper articles on 'What makes a friend a best friend?'; used words from Activity 1. 3. Watched an episode of 'Friends' -- completed various worksheets. 4. Wrote the screenplay for 'School Friends -- Friday the 13th'. 5. Storyboarding and learning about the film-making process. 6. Rehearsals prior to filming -- learning lines, working on pronunciation and preparing props. 7. Wrote lyrics for the theme tune to 'School Friends' to the music of 'I'll Be There For You', the original theme tune to 'Friends' as performed by 'The Rembrandts'. 8. Theme tune singing practice with the Ruthin School Choir. 9. Filming -- all students had input in directing; one older student had responsibility for filming. 10.
