Glyndyfrdwy (Welsh pronunciation: [ɡlɨnˈdəvrdʊɨ]), or sometimes Glyn Dyfrdwy, is a village in the modern county of Denbighshire, Wales. It is situated on the A5 road halfway between Corwen and Llangollen in the Dee Valley (the river Dee is Afon Dyfrdwy in Welsh).
Historically, the village is renowned for its association with Owain Glyndŵr. Near this village, at his manor of Glyndyfrdwy, Owain Glyndŵr (the Baron of Glyndyfrdwy) proclaimed himself Prince of Wales on 16 September 1400, so beginning his fourteen-year rebellion against English rule.
The eroded remains of a 12th-century castle motte, known locally as Owain Glyndŵr's Mount (probably a corruption of mwnt meaning "motte"), was built to command the route through the Dee Valley. Owain's manor is likely to have been in the square moated area across a nearby field. This would have been defended by a water-filled moat, a palisade and a gate.
The Llangollen Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Llangollen) is a volunteer-run heritage railway in Denbighshire, Wales, which operates between Llangollen and Corwen.
At 10 miles (16 km) long, it is currently the longest preserved standard gauge steam railway in Wales. It operates daily in summer as well as weekends throughout the winter months, using a variety of mainly ex-GWR steam locomotives. A minority of timetabled trains are diesel-hauled.
Work had been in the later stages of being carried out on 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) of extension from Carrog to a new station (and western terminus) on the outskirts of Corwen, which has now brought the railway's total operating length to 10 miles (16 km).
Llangollen was already a popular place for tourists by the 1840s. Travel up to this point had been by horse-drawn carriage, but by the 1840s the Shrewsbury to Chester line had been completed, allowing passengers to alight at Llangollen Road (later known as Whitehurst Halt), and then take a coach towards Holyhead.
During the annual Sixties Weekend, the Llangollen Railway and the North West Road Transport Museum provide free bus rides between stations along the line. Running the service this year were an open-topped 1963 Leyland Titan and a 1953 Guy Arab IV. This video was made with a Nikon D90 on an extended monopod in my lap on the top deck of the Titan; aiming was thus something of a guesstimation, but vibration was minimised. The route is mainly along the A5 to Glyndyfrdwy, where a classic car and bike gathering was in progress. I shall record the Carrog leg next year, if I get a chance. The North West Road Transport Museum in St Helens, Lancashire has a large collection of classic and vintage buses, trucks, fire appliances and other vehicles, and is well worth a visit. We continue with regular trains on the great (and windy) Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash near Plymouth. Sadly the Great Britain II was heavily delayed, so we only could catch it entering Plymouth station with 34067 "Tangmere" - SR Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 (instead of 5029 "Nunney Castle" which should have been running) and 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" - BR Britannia Class 7P 4-6-2 in charge. Via CrossCountry HST to Birmingham the overnight stop was Shrewsbury where in the morning two loco hauled passenger trains are almost meeting: Wrexham & Shropshire with class 67 and the Arriva Wales service Holyhead - Cardiff pulled by a class 57. The rest of the morning was spent on the scenic Llangollen museum railway at Llangollen and Glyndyfrdwy where 6430 - GWR class 6400 0-6-0PT did its duties, th...
