Nechung Oracle visits the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, Shambhala Mountain Center
The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya crowns a meadow at the upper end of the main valley of the Shambhala Mountain Center. The Nechung Oracle is the State Oracle of Tibet. The medium of the State Oracle currently resides with the current Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India. The Oracle left Tibet with the 14th Dalai Lama after the Dalai Lama consulted him about the matter and he recommended it.[1] Prior to this, the Nechung Oracle was the designated head of the Nechung monastery in Tibet. The Shambhala Mountain Center was designed to bring the energy of the Stupa into the lives of the people who come to visit. Like the great centers of learning and practice of the past, the plan for this mountain retreat facility was laid out according to the tradition of living in accordance with the energetic forces of the natural environment. The Stupa is sited between two powerful landforms—the promontory, known as Marpa Point, and the steep cliffs opposite it. The power of the Stupa balances and brings together the energies of these surrounding landforms; at the same time, it embodies the wisdom and blessings of the Vidyadhara and of the Buddhist and Shambhala lineages. The Stupa has become the heart of the Shambhala Mountain Center. Stupas are said to promote harmony, prosperity, longevity, good health, peace, and freedom from ignorance. They subdue fear, corruption, and pollution, and bring blessings to the environment in which they are built, to those who build them, and to those who visit ...

Visit Shanti Stupa in Leh, Ladakh
www.TravelsWithSheila.com Shanti Stupa was built by both Japanese Buddhists and Ladakh Buddhists in 1991 and holds the relics of Buddha at its base, enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama. The Stupa was built to promote world peace, prosperity and commemorate 2500 years of Buddhism. It is a major tourist attraction, primarily due to its location with wonderful views of Leh, the surrounding areas and mountains. Tourists are usually driven up to Shanti Stupa but it is also easily walkable from Changspa and the Deskit Villa. For a 20 Rupee Entrance Fee, around .40 cents US, visit even though as far as stupas go, it isn't ancient or as photogenic as others.

Travel India-Dhamek Stupa at Sarnath, Varanasi
Dhamek Stupa (Dhamekh and Dhamekha) is a massive stupa located at Sarnath, 13 km away from Varanasi in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The Dhamek Stupa was built ca. 500 AD to replace an earlier structure commissioned by the great Mauryan king Ashoka in 249 BCE, along with several other monuments, to commemorate his pilgrimage there. Stupas originated as circular mounds encircled by large stones. King Ashoka built stupas to enshrine small pieces of calcinated bone and other relics of Buddha and his disciples. An Ashoka pillar with an edict engraved on it stands near the site. The Dhamek Stupa is said to mark the spot of a deer park (Rishipattana) where the Buddha gave the first sermon to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment,"revealing his Eightfold Path leading to nirvana". The stupa was enlarged on six occasions but the upper part is still unfinished. While visiting Sarnath in 640 AD, Xuanzang recorded that the colony had over 1500 priests and the main stupa was nearly 300 feet (91 m) high.[7] In its current shape, the stupa is a solid cylinder of bricks and stone reaching a height of 43.6 meters and having a diameter of 28 meters. It is the most massive structure in Sarnath. The basement seems to have survived from Ashoka's structure: the stone facing is chiseled and displays delicate floral carvings of Gupta origin. The wall is covered with exquisitely carved figures of humans and birds, as well as inscriptions in the Brāhmī script.

Bhopal Tour.Nov`2010.Sanchi Stupa - Udaigiri Caves - Bhimbetka Paintings - Manav Sangrahalaya
Sanchi is famous for outstanding specimen of Buddhist art and architecture, belonging to the period between the third century BC and the twelfth century AD. The most important of all the Sanchi monuments is the Sanchi Stupa. Stupas are large hemispherical domes, containing a central chamber, in which the relics of the Buddha were placed. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the best preserved early stupas in central India. The Sanchi Stupa is surrounded by a railing with four carved gateways facing all the four directions. ======================================================== It is believed that Sanchi Udaigiri Caves were inhabited by the Buddhist Monks in 2 BCProduced mainly during the rule of Chandraguta II (382-401), these caves are much talked about for lending Gupta Art exclusivity, richness and vitality of expression. These caves were formed into sandstone hills. Today, in these caves you will come across the elaborate carvings of Lord Vishnu. Besides, you will also be delighted to chance upon the ruins of the 6th century Gupta temple. This temple is perched on the summit of the hill. This temple is reckoned among the pioneers following whom other temples were built in India. ======================================================== Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh (near Bhopal) in central India is the largest collection of prehistoric art in India. The caves were discovered in 1958 by Indian archaeologist Dr Wakankar. Legend has it that the name probably derived from the ...

TAWOCHE 2k10 dispatches #4
Waking at 3:30 a.m. is the least of my concerns. We haven’t really been sleeping anyway. Our minds are filled with “What Ifs?” and scenarios that leave us wondering if we are struggling against basic fear, or fighting intuition.
Alpine climbing is a labor of love…it’s type 10 fun…the kind of fun that doesn’t have to be fun to be fun. In fact, most of the time spent in the actual activity is consumed by the minds’ pursuit of the base desire that has thrust you into the situation to begin with. In short, it is not something that makes a tremendous amount of sense.
Following your instincts isn’t really an option because your instincts tell you not to leave the ground. But conversely, not leaving the ground isn’t a viable option either…because fighting your desire to climb leaves you more miserable than the climbing itself.
We think about friends we’ve lost in the mountains and wonder if they were feeling the same thing the last morning they crawled from their respective tents. There is a massive question mark that hangs gloomily above the whole situation, and this morning is no different.
I light the incense and tuck it into the makeshift Stupa. Over my shoulders, pre-dawn light outlines the horizon…the dark figures of Makalu, Baruntse, and Ama Dablam. The last of the gear is shoved into the packs in silence as our labored breath rises into the light of our headlamps. The only thing left to do is start climbing. Greater fears are boiled down to specific distractions: Will there be water? Will the weather hold? Can we climb fast enough? And before we know it, the sun warms our backs and we are high above the valley floor on new terrain. The fear melts and melds with joy to create a hybrid emotion that feels almost tangible.
Like my friend Colin Moorehead says, “Climbing is the truth.”

Regardless of the present-day cloudy sky, Your pure-white nature lightens the hearts of your devotees, When the sky becomes resplendent with glowing splendor, Your splendid nature spreads peace to the human world. Oh, Choten Karpo (white stupa) ! You manifest the stars of the sky studding on the grassland, Choten Karpo (white stupa), the only sun for my heart! Oh, Choten (stupa), the only sun in my heart! (Repeat). * A Stupa (in Sanskrit, literally meaning "heap") is a mound-like structure containing Buddhist relics, typically the remains of buddha, used by Buddhists as a place of worship. The Tibetan word for Stupa is Choten meaning "the basis of offering". Stupas are an ancient form of Mandala. It is a symbol of enlightened mind (the awakened mind, universal divinity) and the path to its realisation. The stupa represents the Buddha's body, his speech, and his mind, but most especially his mind and every part shows the path to Enlightenment. Every stupa contains at the very least a life tree and holy relics.
