Flor de Muertos (Flower of the Dead) examines the cross-cultural collisions regarding death along the US and Mexico border, commencing with the Mexican celebration of the Dia de los Muertos and ending with the All Souls Procession when 20,000 locals turn out in skull face to rattle through the streets of downtown Tucson, Arizona, to remember, honor, and dance with the dead. Flor de Muertos - the Aztec Marigold, 'Cempasuchil'- the scent of marigolds forms a path the souls of the dead can follow back to the living on the annual Day of the Dead. Part documentary, part concert film, Flor, features acclaimed Americana/alternative band Calexico, playing a concert in the historic Rialto Theater to their hometown audience. Desert rat journalist Charles Bowden, who has roamed the borderlands in search of an elusive truth for decades, author Margaret Regan, artist Salvador Duran and others, comment on the insanity of American immigration policies, the blood flowing from an endless and un-winnable drug war, the uselessness of the word, 'closure', and the search for comfort in the resurgent Santa Muerte religion. Their collective voices, along with Calexico's penetrating music, make this beautifully shot documentary a mesmerizing and topical intellectual jam. The omnipresent border fence ultimately fails to divide the fertile cultural zone that is the border. Death is the great equalizing border we will all cross. With the furor over SB1070 and the border death toll climbing, this timely juxtaposition of the Day of the Dead with our immigration policies draws a line in the desert sand.

Full Story: Swedish author Barbro Lindgren received the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) at a royal ceremony in Stockholm on Monday. The awarding committee said "literary pioneer" Lindgren used adventurous language and rich psychological nuance in her children's books. Lindgren has published over a hundred titles, including picture books, poetry, plays, and books for young adults. She has also illustrated several of her own books, which have been translated into more than thirty languages. She is best known for the absurd tale of "Loranga, Masarin and Dartanjang", which is about a world where anything can happen, and a series of picture books about a character called little Max and everyday adventures in the life of a small child. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) was established by the Swedish government in 2002, when Astrid Lindgren died at the age of 94, and is the world's largest children's and young people's literary award with an annual prize of 5 million Swedish crowns. Astrid Lindgren's works have been translated into approximately 90 languages all over the world and is best known for her "Pippi Longstocking" books about the adventures of Pippi, her horse, monkey and friends Tommy and Annika. In her speech Lindgren, who knew Astrid Lindgren, paid tribute to the author and shared some memories with the audience. She said that after having sent Astrid Lindgren, who worked at a publishing house, a manuscript for a book based on her childhood memories, Astrid Lindgren sent her a long reply. "I received a long letter in reply in which she went into great detail on how one ought to write a book. One thing she said was that I shouldn't have so many main characters. Two or three are plenty. And don't let so awfully many things happen. Take out the jokes that are only funny to adults and take out that heartily uninteresting Klas Herman. Then write seven or eight finished short stories and send them to me. And for the first time in my life, I pulled myself together and did what she said. So you may say her letter became my university," Lindgren sad. They share the same surname, but are not related. Last year's winner was the picture-book artist Isol from Argentina and other winners include Philip Pullman, author of fantasy trilogy "His Dark Materials" and Maurice Sendak, who wrote the classic "Where the Wild Things Are".
