WPBT is a PBS member public television station that serves the entire South Florida region, and even including portions of the Treasure Coast, the only television station to serve the entire metropolis. The station is owned and operated by the Community Television Foundation of South Florida, a private nonprofit multi-media organization that serves the communities of South Florida, reaching 1.5 million families weekly from Martin County to the Florida Keys. Some of WPBT's notable national programs include Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer, ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, and the Nightly Business Report. Programs for local consumption include Check, Please! South Florida, a restaurant review show based on a program created by Chicago station WTTW.

History[link]

WPBT is Florida's oldest public television station and was organized in November 1953. WPBT signed on for the first time August 12, 1955 as a shared-time facility with the Dade County Board of Public Instruction's station, WTHS-TV. Originally, DCBPI would broadcast educational programming for five hours in the daytime as WTHS, then the CTF would broadcast two hours of programming in the evenings as WPBT.^[1][2]

Gradually, CTF began broadcasting longer hours, especially after the school board signed on WSEC-TV (channel 17) as a secondary station. CTF's hours increased further after the formation of PBS in 1970. In 1979, the Dade County School Board gave up its portion of channel 2 and the license of WTHS to the Federal Communications Commission. The board moved WTHS' programming inventory to channel 17, which changed its calls to WLRN-TV.

In 2010, WPBT took a new look on "2 HD", along with its children's program "KidVision", designed by.

Original Productions[link]

WPBT is involved in producing several original and local programs. Currently there are three public affairs shows being broadcast on the channel including: Issues, Viewpoint and Pulse. Issues is a weekly half-hour public affairs and news program hosted by Helen Ferre that addresses issues in the local community. Viewpoint is a monthly program hosted by Steve Gushee addressing religion and ethics. Pulse is the newest public affairs program hosted by Jessy Schuster which addresses Caribbean and Caribbean-American issues. In 2011 WPBT2 premiered its newest original production, Haiti Journal, which covers current affairs in Haiti.

WPBT also has produced two nature series called Wild Florida and Changing Seas. Wild Florida hosted by Hunter Reno explores Florida’s ecosystems and wildlife. Changing Seas is a twelve-part series narrated by Peter Thomas. The series explores the oceans surrounding Florida.

WPBT also creates several documentaries about the South Florida area. Projects in development include: Stranahan House, Florida’s State Parks, Into the Wild, and Lost in Florida.

uVu[link]

Launched in 2007, uVu (pronounced you view) is a South Florida community video website hosted by WPBT. uVu consists of user-generated video along with content created and submitted to the site by community groups and cultural/educational institutions. Re-purposed broadcast content, previously aired on WPBT, is also available for viewing and sharing in clip format.

In April 2009, uVu was relaunched with a redesigned website and new URL. Along with video hosting the site now includes personal blogs, profiles and message boards. A relaunch party was held at WPBT2 studios on April 2nd and invited organizations from around South Florida and individuals who work closely with uVu.

In October 2007 WPBT launched a weekly companion TV show called uVu TV on on digital subchannel 2.2. uVu TV travels around the South Florida community highlighting local organizations, places or activities.

Neil Patrick Cavuto (born September 22, 1958) is an American television anchor and commentator on the Fox Business Network and host of three television programs, Your World with Neil Cavuto and Cavuto on Business, both on the Fox News Channel and Cavuto on sister channel Fox Business Network.

Cavuto also tapes a nightly wrap-up of business news which airs on local FOX affiliates during the late news and has a syndicated radio business news segment that airs on weekday afternoons. He is the senior vice president and managing editor of business news for the Fox Business Network, and oversees content and business coverage. He is the author of two books.

Cavuto was born in Westbury, New York, and raised in Danbury, Connecticut, where he attended Immaculate High School. He worked as a White House intern during U.S. president Jimmy Carter's administration, graduated from St. Bonaventure University, and earned a master's degree from American University.^[1]

Neil Cavuto became the managing editor of business news and television anchor of Your World with Neil Cavuto on Fox News Channel in July 1996, later becoming a vice president of business news in March 2006. He serves all three positions concurrently. Your World is Fox's main business news program.

Before joining Fox, he hosted Power Lunch on CNBC and contributed to NBC's Today. He worked with the Public Broadcasting Service for 15 years. He was also a New York City bureau chief.

He has been awarded numerous times by his peers in the journalism industry, including recognition by the Wall Street Journal as the best interviewer in business news, best business television interviewer four consecutive years, and five nominations for Cable ACE awards.^[2] Cavuto was also awarded the 1980 Hellinger Award, the highest award for graduating journalism students from St. Bonaventure University. Cavuto has Interviewed many high profile business, political and world leaders.

Cavuto and his wife, Mary Fulling, whom he married on October 15, 1983, have three children, Tara, Bradley and Jeremy. They reside in Mendham, New Jersey.^[4]

Cavuto has suffered health problems,^[5][6] saying:

"I don't hide that I have had a tough life in many respects. I fought back a near-life-ending cancer, only to end up with multiple sclerosis years later. Doctors have since told me that the odds of contracting both diseases in the same life are something like two million to one! Yet here I am, marching on, continuing to do my job when doctors who've examined my scans and MRIs tell me I shouldn't be walking or talking."^[7]

Jack Horkheimer (June 11, 1938 – August 20, 2010), born Foley Arthur Horkheimer, was the executive director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium. He was best known for his astronomy show Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer, which started airing on PBS on November 4, 1976.^[1]

Early life[link]

Jack Horkheimer was born in 1938 to a wealthy family in Randolph, Wisconsin.^[2][3] His father owned a publishing firm and was the mayor of Randolph, Wisconsin, for 24 years.^[4][5] Horkheimer started his show business career in 1953 at the age of 15 when he hosted a radio show on WBEV. In 1956, he graduated from Campion Jesuit High School.^[6]

During the summers away from college, he travelled the country playing jazz on the piano and organ under the name "Horky". His agents at the Artists Corporation of America ended up giving him the stage name "Jack Foley". He later changed this to "Jack Foley Horkheimer". He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in 1963 as a distinguished scholar.^[1][5]

He moved to Miami, Florida, in 1964 for health reasons and began volunteering at the Miami Science Museum planetarium. He later became its director in 1973.^[5][7]

Horkheimer started his astronomy career in 1964, when he was 26, after he moved to Miami and met astronomer Arthur Smith. Smith was the president of the Miami Museum of Science and the chief of the Southern Cross Astronomical Society.^[4][5] Horkheimer started volunteering at the planetarium writing shows and was later offered a position with the museum.^[7]

Smith asked Horkheimer to run the Miami Space Transit Planetarium when it opened in 1966. Horkheimer's shows were successful and the planetarium went from losing money to becoming profitable. Horkheimer worked his way up to become the planetarium's educational director and eventually the executive director.^[1][5]

Horkheimer changed the planetarium show from a science lecture to a multimedia event including music, lights and narration. He created the Child of the Universe show for the planetarium in 1972, which became famous and used in other planetariums across the country.^[5] Sally Jessy Raphael portrayed the voice of the solar system in this show. The show won an international award from the society of European astronomers in 1976. Horkheimer became the executive director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium in 1973 and stayed there for 35 years until his retirement in 2008.^[2][5]

Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer[link]

Jack Horkheimer was probably best known for his naked-eye astronomy television show Jack Horkheimer: Star Hustler, which started in 1976 and was broadcast nationally in 1985. Created, produced and written by Horkheimer, the show changed its name to Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer in 1997 because Internet searches were producing results for the adult magazine Hustler.

Horkheimer was known nationally for his commentaries about "astronomical events."^[8] He was a science commentator for local Miami news station, starting in 1973.^[1] In 1986, he helped promote an event for viewing Halley's Comet, traveling towards the equator aboard the supersonic airliner Concorde. He appeared on CNN several times, narrating solar eclipses and even hosted shows on Cartoon Network.^[3]

Health issues[link]

Horkheimer was born with a congenital degenerative lung disease known as bronchiectasis and, as a result, suffered from chronic pain.^[4] His ailment was not diagnosed until he was 18 years old.^[5] During this time, he suffered from radiation sickness^[9] and lost his hair as the result of medical X-Ray treatments. In 1957, he had to leave the Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts because it was suspected that he had tuberculosis.^[1] His health issues caused him to move to Miami in 1964 for the humid warm climate.^[4]

Horkheimer had been close to death on several occasions because of his health issues.^[1] As a result, he had prepared a grave site next to his parents. He also had a tombstone prepared and wrote his own epitaph, which reads;^[3]

"Keep Looking Up" was my life's admonition;
I can do little else in my present position.

Death[link]

Horkheimer died at his Florida home on the morning of August 20, 2010 at the age of 72.^[4] His death was related to the respiratory ailment from which he had suffered since childhood.^[5]

Horkheimer had never been married and did not have any children. His death was confirmed by his niece, Kathy, and Tony Lima, marketing vice president for the Miami Science Museum, Horkheimer's employer.^[4] An email circulated among the museum's staff, stated that they were "very saddened to have just learned that our resident Star Gazer, Jack Horkheimer, passed away today after being ill for quite some time."^[10]

John Richardson

Sir John Richardson (5 November 1787 – 5 June 1865) was a Scottish naval surgeon, naturalist and arctic explorer.^[1]

Richardson was born at Dumfries. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, and became a surgeon in the navy in 1807. He traveled with John Franklin in search of the Northwest Passage on the Coppermine Expedition of 1819–1822. Richardson wrote the sections on geology, botany and icthyology for the official account of the expedition.^[1]

Franklin and Richardson returned to Canada between 1825 and 1827, again traveling overland to the Arctic Ocean. The natural history discoveries of this expedition were so great that they had to be recorded in two separate works, the Flora Boreali-Americana (1833–40), written by William Jackson Hooker, and the Fauna Boreali-Americana (1829–37), written by Richardson, William John Swainson, John Edward Gray and William Kirby.^[1]

At the British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in 1842, Richardson described the diving apparatus and treatment of diver Roderick Cameron following an injury that occurred on 14 October 1841 during the salvage operations on the HMS Royal George.^[2]

Richardson was knighted in 1846. He traveled with John Rae on an unsuccessful search for Franklin in 1848–49, describing it in An Arctic Searching Expedition (1851). He retired to the Lake District in 1855, and is buried at St Oswald's Church Grasmere.^[1]

He also wrote accounts dealing with the natural history, and especially the ichthyology, of several other Arctic voyages, and was the author of Icones Piscium (1843), Catalogue of Apodal Fish in the British Museum (1856), the second edition of Yarrell's History of British Fishes (1860), The Polar Regions (1861).^[1] and Arctic Ordeal: The Journal of John Richardson Edited by C. Stuart Houston (1984). The National Marine Biological Library at the Marine Biological Association retains some original illustrations used by Richardson in preparation for the second edition of Yarrell's book.^[3]

Sir John Richardson is great grandfather of Sir Nevill F. Mott, British Physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1977.

Andrew James Hall (born 31 July 1975) is a South African cricketer and a former member of the South African cricket team (playing from 1999 until 2007). He is an all-rounder who bowls fast-medium pace, and has been used as both an opening batsman and in the lower order. Prior to making it on the South African first class cricket scene he played indoor cricket for South Africa. He broke through in 1995/96 and has played for Transvaal, Gauteng, and Easterns.

Hall was initially thought of solely as a limited overs cricket specialist and made his ODI debut against the West Indies at Durban in 1999. He was a regular in the ODI side until 2007, taking part in South Africa's 2003 Cricket World Cup squad and the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

He appeared in the Test side sporadically and made his debut in 2002 against Australia at Cape Town. Batting at number 8, he scored 70 but did not pick up any wickets in the match.

He retired from international cricket in September 2007 and went to play for the Hyderabad Heroes in the Indian Cricket League and was a part of the squad that won the second Edelweiss Challenge.

International career[link]

During the 2003 England tour he received a late call-up to the squad and impressed with 16 wickets in the Test series. He scored a match-winning 99 not out at Headingley and became the 5th batsman in Test cricket to have been stranded one short of a hundred.

In 2004, due to the absence of the recently retired Gary Kirsten and non-touring Herschelle Gibbs, he was promoted to open the batting in the Test series against India. He reacted to the added responsibility by scoring 163 at Kanpur - his maiden Test century. The century was made against the likes of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, batting for almost ten hours.

He holds the World Record 8th wicket stand in ODI cricket of 138 with Justin Kemp, made against India in November 2006. His contribution was an unbeaten 56 from 47 balls and he went on to take 3 wickets in the second innings.

During the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies he took his maiden 5 wicket haul (5-18) against England on 17 April at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

County career[link]

In 2003 he had a stint with Worcestershire and in 2005 he became an overseas player at Kent, returning for a part of the 2006 season before returning to South Africa for their two-Test match series against Sri Lanka. He returned to England in 2008 when he signed for Northamptonshire as a Kolpak player. While playing for the Steelbacks, he set a record for the best Twenty20 figures taking 6/14 in 2008.

Mugging Incident[link]

Hall was the victim of a robbery at an automatic teller machine in 1998, during which he was shot in his left hand. The mugger is said to have fired six shots at him, but the incident has developed into an urban myth in which the extent of his injuries is greatly exaggerated. In 2001, he was driven around in his own car with a gun pointed to his head.

International retirement[link]

Hall retired from international cricket in September 2007. Whilst not giving a reason for his decision, Graham Ford - Hall's coach at Kent - speculated it was due to his omission from the 2007 Twenty20 World Championship squad, saying:^[1]
