Aurora (astronomy)
Aurora (astronomy)
An aurora (plural: aurorae or auroras; from the Latin word aurora, "sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn) is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind and, on Earth, are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. Most aurorae occur in a band known as the auroral zone, which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora_(astronomy)- published: 28 Feb 2014

AURORA BOREALIS - AStroconcert Stefano Giovanardi (narrator) Angelina Yershova (music) A magic event, yet real. A hypnotic, unforgettable vision. One of the most spectacular expressions of wonder in the universe. This is "Aurora Borealis", and much more: blending a travel reportage, a science story and a live concert, it is an invitation to let one of the most captivating natural phenomena mesmerize the senses and the mind. The Astroconcert "Aurora Borealis" is the fruit of a collaboration between Stefano Giovanardi -- astronomer at the Planetarium and Astronomical Museum of Rome -- and composer and musician Angelina Yershova. The impressions of a journey toward an extreme territory, with icy temperatures and immense landscapes, take shape within a musical frame bringing new emotional meanings to the images of the northern lights. From the infernal power of huge solar eruptions to the delicate dance of the auroral lights, this Astroconcert draws an evocative knitting through space and time, between the earth and the sky, where knowledge regains the taste of wonder. The original images of the northern lights were shot by Stefano Giovanardi in Ivalo (Finland) and edited as time lapse sequences. The original soundtrack is composed and performed live by Angelina Yershova (piano, live electronics, voice). "Aurora Borealis" will be presented live in streaming on April 12, 2014 as an event for the Global Astronomy Month 2014, upon invitation by Astronomers Without Borders. You can follow the event at: https://new.livestream.com/angelinayershova/astroconcert Everybody is welcome to write questions and send feedback using the Livestream chat. We will reply after the concert and in the following days. aurora borealis viewing Timelapse Stockholm City
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful events to occur in our world, the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has both astounded and amazed people since it was first discovered. This phenomenon ocurrs when the sun gives off high-energy charged particles (also called ions) that travel out into space at speeds of 300 to 1200 kilometres per second. A cloud of such particles is called a plasma. The stream of plasma coming from the sun is known as the solar wind. As the solar wind interacts with the edge of the earth's magnetic field, some of the particles are trapped by it and they follow the lines of magnetic force down into the ionosphere, the section of the earth's atmosphere that extends from about 60 to 600 kilometers above the earth's surface. When the particles collide with the gases in the ionosphere they start to glow, producing the spectacle that we know as the auroras, northern and southern. The INNERview - Ep97C01 Kwon O-chul_An Astronomy Photographer Captivated by the Beauty of Aurora
The INNERview Ep97 The one and only astrophotographer, Kwon O-chul A pioneer of astrophotography in Korea, Kwon O-chul! He is an avid follower of astronomical wonders whose photographs move the hearts of countless people, even those who aren't at all interested in stars. This star gazer has made many notable achievements after leaving his job at global firm in Korea to follow his passion and become an astrophotographer . He became the first Korean ever to have his photographs featured on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day and even signed a contract with National Geographic. His photographs can be seen in middle and high school textbooks and he was the one who captured the brilliant aurora shown in the mobile phone commercial, starring Lee Byung-hun. That's not all! He is also a member of The World At Night (TWAN: www.twanight.org) comprised of 33 of the world's most famous astronomy photographers. Kwon O-chul has had a keen interest in nature and the universe since childhood. After falling in love with the study of astronomy, he began pursuing astrophotography after entering university. He had to learn the photographic techniques mostly on his own, but he had a natural gift in this particular field and eventually went on to hold solo exhibitions by the time he graduated from university. His passion for stars not only drove him to success as a photographer but also led him to the love of his life and now-wife whom he met through an online club formed by star gazers. Tune into The INNERview for a special interview with Kwon O-chul, who will share his philosophical view of astronomy that's bound to trigger your interest in space and celestial bodies and give you tips on how to capture stunning astronomical phenomena on camera!- published: 07 Jan 2014
