Walkie-Talkie Skyscraper Beam 'Melts Cars'
Blinding rays of light from a skyscraper in the City of London are being blamed for melting vehicles below it. Developers of 20 Fenchurch Street, better known as the "Walkie-Talkie" because of its distinctive shape, are investigating reports of the damaging glare, and a number of nearby car parking spaces have been suspended, say reports. Businessman Martin Lindsay said he was distraught when he returned to find his luxury Jaguar XJ saloon with warped panels along one side. The wing mirror and badge had also melted from the heat of the reflected sunlight, he claimed. "They're going to have to think of something. I'm gutted. How can they let this continue?" he told City AM. Another driver has also come forward to complain of damage to his Vauxhall Vivaro van. Eddie Cannon, a heating and air conditioning engineer, said: "The van looks a total mess - every bit of plastic on the left hand side and everything on the dashboard has melted, including a bottle of Lucozade that looks like it has been baked." The 37-storey skyscraper is still under construction. On Tuesday temperatures measured in front of the building reached 33C (92F). In a joint statement, developers Land Securities and Canary Wharf, told the newspaper: "As a precautionary measure, the City of London has agreed to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected."- published: 03 Sep 2013

South Africa '200 Gold Miners Trapped In Shaft'
South Africa '200 Gold Miners Trapped In Shaft'
The group were mining illegally when they became trapped by boulders thrown by a rival group two days ago, according to rescuers. Rescue services are in the process of rescuing a group of illegal miners trapped in an abandoned gold mine shaft near Benoni, Johannesburg. Werner Vermaak of emergency services ER24 said they are in touch with a smaller group of about 30 miners who became trapped by fallen rocks below the surface. "They told us there are about 200 others trapped further below," Mr Vermaak said. It has not been possible to verify how many men are trapped underground. "They say there are approximately 30 people trapped towards the top of the old shaft and the rest are down a steep tunnel. In some areas you can still hear them and speak to them. "It's an abandoned mine shaft in the middle of the public veld (open fields) ... it was not a blocked-off area," he added. "Rescue services managed to lift up one of the boulders. We managed to send down water to them and we think some of them are suffering from dehydration." At least nine miners have so far been rescued alive from the shaft and are being looked after by medical staff. The men have been trapped in the shaft for two days and were discovered by local police patrolling the area after cries for help were heard by passers by. Rescuers were able to reach the men by lowering a ladder into the shaft after removing the boulders from the entrance. Speaking from the scene, Sky's Africa Correspondent Alex Crawford said: "Rescuers have made contact with the first group of 30 who say there could be 150-200 more miners further below. "It's a big temptation for people here who are out of work to get access to abandoned shafts because there are minerals down there, but it's unregulated and highly dangerous. "What we've heard is there was a group of illegal miners who had been working underground when other miners, a separate group, they say tried to rob them. "The second group threw boulders down into the shaft to trap the first group in it. "Erkurhuleni Rescue Services says they can only confirm 30 trapped miners although they have been told there may be many more." Officials believe the group may have dug their own tunnel which linked up with the main mine shaft. The Chinese company Gold One reportedly has prospecting rights over the shaft. Gold One spokesman, Grant Stuart, said the miners were trapped in the New Kleinfontein 6 ventilation shaft, which had been closed off with concrete slabs. "The illegal miners have dug a tunnel right next to it to access the shaft and it has collapsed behind them," he said. Illegal mining is common in South Africa and often involves miners living underground in dangerous conditions. Fatalities are frequent and there are sometimes fights underground between rival gangs. Some 82 men - thought to have been illegal miners - died after an underground fire at a Harmony gold mine in South Africa in 2009.- published: 16 Feb 2014

Shangri La Ancient Homes Destroyed By Fire (Raw Video)
A 1,300-year-old Tibetan village has been partially destroyed by fire, according to state media. The fire began at around 1.30am in Dukezong, in Shangri-La, in China's southwest Yunnan province, and destroyed more than 100 traditional wooden houses, Xinhua news agency said. More than 1,000 firefighters were called in to battle the giant blaze, which at times had flames more than 10 metres high. Local authorities said strong winds hampered efforts to control the fire, which was still spreading by mid-morning on Saturday. Villagers were evacuated as the fire broke out and no casualties have been reported. The cause of the fire is still unknown but the cost of damage is expected to reach 100 million yuan (£10m), according to the Chinese news portal Zhongguo Xinwen Wang. Dukezong, which means "town of the Moon", was founded around 1,300 years ago, and is known for its well-preserved ancient streets and traditional culture. Earlier this week another high-profile site of Tibetan culture, the Buddhist Serthar institute in the nearby province of Sichuan, also went up in flames with ten buildings destroyed.- published: 11 Jan 2014

River Thames Floods Homes In 'Major Incident'
The Thames swells to record levels and thousands of properties are at risk as a volunteer pleads with the Prime Minister for help. Residents have been evacuated from their flood-hit homes along the River Thames and thousands of other properties are at risk as record water levels are set to rise further. Parts of the Thames Valley are submerged with hundreds of homes flooded, and levels in at least 10 places at an all-time high. With more rain forecast to fall overnight, police have declared a "major incident" in east Berkshire. There are 14 severe flood warnings, meaning an imminent danger to life, in place between Datchet in Berkshire and Shepperton Green in Surrey, and two remain in Somerset. Datchet was severely hit by flooding after the water rose by over half a metre in 24 hours, blocking roads and train tracks. Much of the nearby village of Wraysbury was under water. More than 300 other flood warnings and alerts have also been issued, including in the South East, South West and the Midlands. Riverside properties by the Thames were inundated by water after it burst its banks. Some residents in Wraysbury and Walton-on-Thames in Surrey have been evacuated but other people are refusing to leave as they are worried about possible looting. Around 30,000 sandbags have been deployed in Datchet, Old Windsor, Horton, Wraysbury and Cookham in Berkshire, with another 5,000 due to be sent out. Hundreds more properties in the region could be flooded over the next two or three days, the Environment Agency has warned. As far down river as Kingston on the outskirts of London the river is high and rising. In Thames Ditton, the river has burst its banks and more property is expected to flood. The same is true up to East and West Molesey. Meanwhile, a flood warden helping people evacuate deluged homes in Wraysbury made a desperate appeal to David Cameron for help, telling him: "Get your waders on and get down here now." In an emotional plea during a live interview with Sky News, Su Burrows said to the Prime Minister: "We need you, we need the army and we need bodies on the ground. "We are tackling this as a community because we refuse to go under, but you need to do something about this now." Environment Agency chairman Lord Smith has said the organisation's staff and military personnel will be out in Wraysbury tonight to help combat flooding. Earlier, Mr Cameron gave his support to the agency amid criticism of its handling of the crisis and insisted: "This is not the time to change personnel". On a visit to Weymouth, Dorset, where coastal defences are being shored up after a weekend of severe weather, Mr Cameron backed the Government's response to flooding caused by the wettest January on record. He said: "When more pumps were needed, we provided more pumps. When more money was needed, we provided more money. When the military was needed, we made sure they were deployed." It came as commuters faced further misery, with flooded rail lines and landslips causing major disruption on some First Great Western, CrossCountry, Southeastern and South West Trains routes Storm and flood-hit Britain could be left with a bill for more than £1bn, according to the latest estimates. :: Police in Wales have found a body during the search for a man who went missing while kayaking with friends on the River Usk at Llangynidr. And lifeboats and rescue helicopters continue to search for two Dutch tourists who disappeared after setting out for a walk along Sheep's Head in County Cork, Ireland.- published: 10 Feb 2014

Australia Wildfires Rage In New South Wales
More than 100 wildfires are raging in Australia's most populous state, New South Wales, with about 18 of them reported to be out of control. Up to 30 properties are believed to have been destroyed in the Blue Mountains town of Springwood, although the total number is expected to rise. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far. Smoke from the fires is also hanging eerily over the Sydney skyline, casting an orange haze. The fires have been caused by unseasonably hot temperatures reaching 35C, as well as strong winds which have helped spread the flames. State premier Barry O'Farrell said: "We are unclear yet as to how many properties have been lost but it's suspected that by the time we finish counting, it'll at least be in the hundreds." A spokesman for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service said the fires were the most serious wildfire emergency in years. In February 2009, wildfires, which are common in Australia in the warmer months, killed 173 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes in Victoria state.- published: 17 Oct 2013
