June 26, 2014 - Things got heated on the set of The View Thursday when Whoopi Goldberg brought up comments comedian Russell Brand made attacking Fox News yesterday. TheBlaze's Will Cain, who was sitting in as guest host, went after Brand's "inappropriate" words, and got some pushback from Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd. "I think it's part of this whole trend we have," Cain said. "We elevate words to the most harmful thing in society. How dare you say something that could offend somebody How dare you say something that hurts my feelings? Why have we gone to this place where words are the worst thing?" "Let me tell you why," Goldberg shot back, giving Cain a lesson on America's "history of utilizing words to harm people and hurt people." She said "the people who have been on the other side of it, I think are at the point where they're saying, this is not okay anymore." When Cain invoked the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me," the rest of panel loudly voiced their opposition to its sentiment. "Words do hurt you," Shepherd asserted. Goldberg brought up the controversy over the Washington Redskins to defend minority groups' rights to get angry over offensive language. "We'll all be out of business, we'll all stop talking," Cain replied. "Everybody's offended all the time, from the Fighting Irish to the Redskins. Everyone's offended." The View
4th Overall Position in the Jessops 'The Shot' UK National film competition.
WARNING: Because of the message of the film, people have found it emotionally tough to watch, especially parents.
ORIGINALLY called 'The Shot', this was a short film entry for a competition, where the brief was to name your film 'The Shot', but the interpretation was completely open.
Some entries talked about a shot of a drink, a gun shot, someone who was a good shot at killing/ shooting, someone's shot at a big chance in life, and some of the entries just consisted of one long continuous take.
My approach, was to have one camera shot that anchored the whole story and that was as much the little girl's as the audience's view on her family life, and the downfall of it.
The idea was to touch on a subject that can be very borderline for many people - as there can be an extremely fine line between strict discipline and going too far.
I hope this film makes people think, perhaps about how they treat their kids or how others they might know treat their kids, and to step up and help where things might have gone too far.
Although I directed this film, the Carey family themselves were incredibly talented, and I couldn't have done it as well without Jessica's enormous help with her daughter, as I'd never directed children before.
Overall, I'm indebted to Alex and Jessica for their great patience with over-running shoots, when the kids had to go to bed (they have a younger son), and for all the equipment that stood around their house for a few days.
Also as a first for films, the original idea of this shot started with a joke on twitter about how a lot of online films starting having increasingly narrow aspect ratios, to the point where we'll have a 'slit under the door' view on life. So to all the guys I follow on twitter - thanks to your humour and fun poking at all things film!
This was a first for me in terms of a fictional short story film. Few things have taught me more than just planning and doing it.

Alison Chaplin held the Private View of her latest exhibition 'En Plein Air' on Sunday May 18th 2014, which was a lovely sunny afternoon, perfect for sipping a glass of wine while enjoying the art on display or popping downstairs to check out the craft market going on outside in the courtyard. 'En Plein Air' is on now until June 15th 2014, at The View Gallery in Epping Forest, next door to Queen Elizabeth l's hunting lodge on Rangers Road, Chingford, E4 7QH. Alison Chaplin is a London artist whose work has sold abroad through Saatchi Online as well as in the UK including the Queen's British Grill in Wanstead E11 2SA where twelve of her tree paintings can be seen.
