Kony, M23, and the Real Rebels of Congo
Kony, M23, and the Real Rebels of Congo
The Democratic Republic of Congo is now home to more than a dozen militant groups, factions of the national army, and scores of rebel combatants. We rode along with US Special Forces and followed the path of Kony and the LRA into the jungle. In the process we learned that the greatest threat to regional security were rebels that no one wanted to talk about: M23. DRC: Africa's Deadliest Conflict
DRC: Africa's Deadliest Conflict
Every day, MSF is confronted with the medical consequences of violence in its hospitals, health centers and mobile clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Medical teams treat trauma injuries from guns, machetes, lances, rifle bayonets, knives, hammers, shells, bows and arrows. But for those on the receiving end, there is often no escape from the violence. Habagasi, an 80-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions at a displaced persons camp on the outskirts of Goma, has been looking after the orphaned children left behind when her family were murdered: "I had eight sons; they were killed together with my husband and they pumped bullets into my body." Having fled for their lives, Habagasi and her grandchildren thought they'd be safe at an 'official' displaced persons camp, but the violence continued: "The first month here, M23 raided. They looted our food rations, clothes, phones... they stole all of that. They did bad things to me." Unfortunately, Habagasi is not alone in suffering violence at the hands of armed groups. Some 2.96 million people are currently displaced in DRC and many of them have no access to humanitarian assistance. Many communities are cut off from medical care due to poor infrastructure, displacement and conflict, and adequate assistance is not being provided in rural and conflict-affected areas by aid organizations and by the state. At the same time, violence against civilians, medical staff and property is commonplace, and health care providers are regularly required to suspend operations, leaving people deprived of the medical care they urgently need. Clashes were also reported in the DRC's second city of Lubumbashi. Those involved are said to be supporters of ex-presidential candidate Paul Joseph Mukungubila but authorities have played down talk of an attempted coup d'etat. "There were so few of them and they were so poorly armed that we don't have the impression that the assailants had any other objective than to sow panic and terror on the eve of the New Year festivities which have such a great importance in our culture," said government spokesman Lambert Mende Omalanga. The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to emerge from decades of violence and instability. A charity working in the country told euronews of the shock at the latest unrest. "Very early in the morning, the situation was fairly normal," said Francis Ntessani of 'Save the Children'. "People were preparing to go about their business as usual. So it must have surprised everyone. The situation is rather tense so the population continues to be watchful. In certain districts it seems that people are starting to go out, while remaining vigilant." Deadly Stampede At DR Congo Football Match - 12 May 2014 At least 15 people have been killed in a stampede at a football match in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, officials say. Reports say the trouble began after police fired tear gas in the crowded stadium, causing panic. More than 20 people were injured. Local fans were unhappy after the home team, ASV Club, were defeated 1-0 by Tout Puissant Mazembe from Lubumbashi. Stampedes are a frequent occurrence at mass events in the country. "Four policemen were harassed by supporters. When they fired tear gas, the stampede began, causing the deaths," the local minister for central Kinshasa, Emmanuel Akweti, told Reuters news agency. Last month, at least 14 were crushed to death at a tribute festival for popular Congolese singer King Kester Emeneya.
