The Riemann Hypothesis is one of the Millennium Prize Problems and has something to do with primes. What's that all about? Rather than another hand-wavy explanation, I've tried to put in some details here. Some grown-up maths follows.

CORRECTION: The functional form of the zeta function is a reflection around the point 0.5, not the line x=0.5. But you can think of that as a reflection in the x-axis followed by a reflection in the line x=0.5.
For example, if we start with zeta(x + iy) and reflect it in the x-axis we get zeta(x - iy). Reflect that in the x=1/2 line we get (junk)*zeta(1 - x - iy). And reflect that in the x-axis again we get (junk)*zeta(1 - x + iy). When zeta(x + iy) = 0 so are all the others.

The zeros are still symmetric around the x=1/2 line. The reflection of zeta(x + iy) is (junk)*zeta(1 - x + iy). In the video I mixed up zeta(1 - x + iy) with zeta(1 - x - iy).
But the point is the same, the error in the Prime Number Theorem is minimised if all the zeros lie on the line x=1/2.

Some people have asked about my final claim that you don't get the prize for a counterexample. Here is the rule from the Clay Institute:
"if a counterexample is proposed, the SAB will consider this counterexample after publication and the same two-year waiting period as for a proposed solution will apply. If, in the opinion of the SAB, the counterexample effectively resolves the problem then the SAB may recommend the award of the Prize. If the counterexample shows that the original problem survives after reformulation or elimination of some special case, then the SAB may recommend that a small prize be awarded to the author. The money for this prize will not be taken from the Millennium Prize Problem fund, but from other CMI funds."
In other words, there are no guarantees either way.

Math Mornings is a series of public lectures aimed at bringing the joy and variety of mathematics to students and their families. Speakers from Yale and elsewhere will talk about aspects of mathematics that they find fascinating or useful. The talks will usually be accessible to students from 7th grade and up, although occasionally some familiarity with high-school subjects will be helpful.
Math Mornings lectures will occur on three Sundays each semester at Yale University. The third lecture for the series was given by Yale Mathematics Professor Alex Kontorovich on December 2, 2012 who spoke about "The Riemann Hypothesis: How to make $1 Million Without Getting Out of Bed."

Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann [ˈʁiːman] (
listen) (September 17, 1826 – July 20, 1866) was an influential German mathematician who made lasting contributions to analysis, number theory and differential geometry, some of them enabling the later development of general relativity.
Riemann was born in Breselenz, a village near Dannenberg in the Kingdom of Hanover in what is the Federal Republic of Germany today. His father, Friedrich Bernhard Riemann, was a poor Lutheran pastor in Breselenz who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. His mother, Charlotte Ebell, died before her children had reached adulthood. Riemann was the second of six children, shy, and suffered from numerous nervous breakdowns. Riemann exhibited exceptional mathematical skills, such as fantastic calculation abilities, from an early age but suffered from timidity and a fear of speaking in public.
During 1840, Riemann went to Hanover to live with his grandmother and attend lyceum (middle school). After the death of his grandmother in 1842, he attended high school at the Johanneum Lüneburg. In high school, Riemann studied the Bible intensively, but he was often distracted by mathematics. His teachers were amazed by his adept ability to solve complicated mathematical operations, in which he often outstripped his instructor's knowledge. In 1846, at the age of 19, he started studying philology and theology in order to become a priest and help with his family's finances.

CORRECTION: The functional form of the zeta function is a reflection around the point 0.5, not the line x=0.5. But you can think of that as a reflection in the x-axis followed by a reflection in the line x=0.5.
For example, if we start with zeta(x + iy) and reflect it in the x-axis we get zeta(x - iy). Reflect that in the x=1/2 line we get (junk)*zeta(1 - x - iy). And reflect that in the x-axis again we get (junk)*zeta(1 - x + iy). When zeta(x + iy) = 0 so are all the others.
The zeros then look like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Zero-free_region_for_the_Riemann_zeta-function.svg That's four zeros for the price of one.
The zeros are still symmetric around the x=1/2 line. The reflection of zeta(x + iy) is (junk)*zeta(1 - x + iy). In the video I mixed up zeta(1 - x + iy) with zeta(1 - x - iy).
But the point is the same, the error in the Prime Number Theorem is minimised if all the zeros lie on the line x=1/2.

Some people have asked about my final claim that you don't get the prize for a counterexample. Here is the rule from the Clay Institute:
"if a counterexample is proposed, the SAB will consider this counterexample after publication and the same two-year waiting period as for a proposed solution will apply. If, in the opinion of the SAB, the counterexample effectively resolves the problem then the SAB may recommend the award of the Prize. If the counterexample shows that the original problem survives after reformulation or elimination of some special case, then the SAB may recommend that a small prize be awarded to the author. The money for this prize will not be taken from the Millennium Prize Problem fund, but from other CMI funds."
In other words, there are no guarantees either way.

Why did Beckham choose the number 23 shirt? How is 17 the key to the evolutionary survival of a strange species of cicada? Prime numbers are the atoms of arithmetic -- the hydrogen and oxygen of the world of numbers. Despite their fundamental importance to mathematics, they represent one of the most tantalizing enigmas in the pursuit of human knowledge. In 1859, the German mathematician Bernhard Riemann put forward an idea -- a hypothesis -- that seemed to reveal a magical harmony at work in the numerical landscape. A million dollars now await the person who can unravel the mystery of the hidden music that might explain the cacophony of the primes.
Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Wadham College. He is author of numerous academic articles and books on mathematics. He has been a visiting Professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, the Max Planck Institute in Bonn, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Australian National University in Canberra.
Marcus du Sautoy is author of the best-selling popular mathematics book The Music of the Primes published by Fourth Estate in 2003 and translated into 10 languages. It has won two major prizes in Italy and Germany for the best popular science book of the year. His new book Finding Moonshine: A Mathematician's Journey Through Symmetry is also published by Fourth Estate and was released in March 2008.
