Do Arab men hate women? Head to Head | Al Jazeera English
"Why do they hate us?" With these five words in a controversial magazine article, Egyptian-American journalist Mona Eltahawy shot to fame, unleashing a devastating critique of women's rights in the Arab world. In the season premiere of Head to Head , Mehdi Hasan challenges Eltahawy on her views regarding the status of women in Arab states. Are Arab or Muslim societies inherently patriarchal? And how does the narrative of Islam as sexist play into geo-politics and Western stereotypes of the Middle East? Joining the discussion is Dr Aitemad Muhanna of the London School of Economics' Middle East Centre; self-proclaimed progressive Imam Dr Taj Hargey; and Dr Shuruq Naguib, a British-Egyptian academic from Lancaster University.- published: 24 Feb 2014

Ordeal in Cairo: Al Sisi ignores Obama's call for clemency for Al Jazeera trio Subscribe to Journeyman: http://www.youtube.com/journeymanpictures For downloads and more information: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=67361&bid;=2 There has been international outrage at the harsh sentence given to the Al Jazeera trio. With access to key players in the battle between Egypt and the powerful broadcaster, this report offers a critical analysis of the story. "We have lost our lives this past six months. The whole family has", explains Peter Greste's mother Lois. She and her husband have watched in disbelief as the trial has played out in the Egyptian courts. To see their son charged with "fabricating news" and "aiding and abetting a terrorist organisation" adds the ultimate insult to injury for Peter's father, always impressed by his son's charity and championing of humanitarian causes. "This case is another example of how the government is cracking down on any kind of dissent!" yells Canadian-Egyptian journalist Mohamed Fahmy from inside a cage. After only two months work for Al Jazeera, Fahmy too found himself incarcerated and torn away from his life and fiancee. Greste's lawyer quit before the verdict, claiming Al Jazeera were making major mistakes in defending their employees, such as sending them to Egypt without accreditation and filing a separate law suit for $150 million in damages alongside the trio's case. Pawns in a major diplomatic rift between Qatar and Egypt and victims of Al Sisi's repressive crackdown on free speech, for the journalists the outlook is bleak. "There is no hope in Egypt's judicial system", says Fahmy's fiancee. Mexico's vigilante state | Fault Lines | Al Jazeera English
Fault Lines travels to Mexico to find out what happens when vigilante groups take on powerful drug cartels. Thousands of vigilantes have taken up arms to fight the Knights Templar drug cartel that has been terrorizing communities in the state of Michoacán. Businessmen, farmers, and even doctors have gone on the offensive to take back their towns and protect their families from extortion, rape, and murder at the hands of organized crime. Jose Manuel Mireles, doctor and self-defense force leader: "The government doesn't have a strategy. They don't know how to work with the people. They want to eliminate the word autodefensas. They want to forget the word comunitarios. They are stealing our job, our work. The objective of the uprising is to clean all of Michoacán. And we're not going to stop." Fault Lines' corespondent Tereso Bo travels to the western Mexican state to follow the chaos unfolding there and examine how the federal government is attempting to control the complex situation on the ground. Is this a popular uprising, or is it part of the same never-ending cycle of armed conflict that has routinely scarred the people of this agricultural state?- published: 08 May 2014

Iraqi writer Abu Firas attacks Saudi Arabia & Qatar on Al Jazeera (English Subs)
An Iraqi writer by the name of Abu Firas was a guest at Aljazeera's "The Opposite Direction" on June 18, 2014 where he took every chance to attack Saudi Arabia, Qatar's Emir and prominent religious clerics Yusuf al-Qaradawi and Ibn Baz in those countries. Abu Firas returned to Iraq, where he received a hero's welcome. Iraq has been the subject of an invasion by insurgency groups over the past week whereby 1.700 soldiers of the Iraqi army were killed after key officers left their post. Iraq has formally pointed to Saudi Arabia and Qatari as sponsors of the insurgency group ISIS. Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, who have also worked for BBC, CNN and New York Times were convicted of aiding the Muslim Brotherhood and reporting false news. Evidence shown by the prosecution included a BBC podcast, family photos and a pop video by the Australian singer Gotye. Baher Mohamed was given an extra three years for having a single spent bullet casing he found during a protest. All this, one day after the US released $575 million dollars in military aid to Egypt, frozen since the military coup last year. Hundreds of supporters or suspected members of the Brotherhood have also been silenced by Sisi's courts. International criticism has starting pouring in, but will it be enough? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Meltdown The men who crashed the world. Aljazeera PART 3
In the first episode of Meltdown, we hear about four men who brought down the global economy: a billionaire mortgage-seller who fooled millions; a high-rolling banker with a fatal weakness; a ferocious Wall Street predator; and the power behind the throne. The crash of September 2008 brought the largest bankruptcies in world history, pushing more than 30 million people into unemployment and bringing many countries to the edge of insolvency. Wall Street turned back the clock to 1929. But how did it all go so wrong? Lack of government regulation; easy lending in the US housing market meant anyone could qualify for a home loan with no government regulations in place. Also, London was competing with New York as the banking capital of the world. Gordon Brown, the British finance minister at the time, introduced 'light touch regulation' - giving bankers a free hand in the marketplace. All this, and with key players making the wrong financial decisions, saw the world's biggest financial collapse.- published: 12 Oct 2011
