Immigrant Detention Center Bed Quota - Wade Henderson Remarks
Immigrant Detention Center Bed Quota - Wade Henderson Remarks
In the absence of leadership from Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill, the mass detention and deportation of individuals who should be on a path to citizenship continues at a rapid rate. As Republican leadership in the House of Representatives continue to hold reform hostage, reform advocates have begun to pursue all available avenues to achieve individual elements of reform to the current broken system. The elimination of the detention bed quota is one of several efforts underway to reform the system that should be overhauled in comprehensive legislation. Press statement from Wade Henderson, president and CEO, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights: "The failed War on Drugs, misguided mandatory minimum sentences and the boom in immigration detention have led to the largest prison population in the world and marked millions of men and women with a scarlet letter making it harder for them to work, raise a family, and even vote. "Bed mandates" are just a euphemism for mandatory minimums and Congress must repeal them now."- published: 12 Mar 2014

del sapere, delle mani. le voci - promo
For a few decades, in the western world, a reinvention of the past and present has grown popular, with a celebration of traditional knowledge, folklore, etc. as the real forms of local, original, authentic, and genuine aboriginal ways of life.
On the one hand, perhaps, this is a reaction to processes and mechanisms induced by globalization. However, on the other hand, this reaction may also fall into those very mechanisms, reducing the values of folklore and tradition into marketable commodities.
Finally, there is another risk: the original historical, anthropological and artistic practices and knowledge increasingly become arguments in favour of rhetorical regional policies that present difference, diversity and change as negative values, defects, and a hostile presence that needs to be eliminated.
In order to investigate these issues in a new way, we tried to analyse them from the inside, by expanding our research field into three different contexts: Sardinia, Morocco, and Southern France. In these locations, we tried to understand the point of view of the craftsmen, a category of people who are considered the bearers of traditional knowledge and practices which are authentic, untamed and representative of identity.

2006 Henderson Lecture: David Weinberger “Everything is Miscellaneous”
The 2006 Henderson Lecture featured Dr. David Weinberger who presented, “Everything is Miscellaneous” on Thursday, December 7, 2006 in the Murphey Hall Auditorium.
Abstract
Ever since Aristotle, we have organized knowledge according to some basic principles. By odd coincidence — that is, by no coincidence at all — these are the same principles that guide how we organize objects in the physical world. The most common structure of knowledge is the branching tree, found in everything from books (volumes, chapters, sections…) to the tree of life (animals, vertebrates, mammals…). We've assumed that to know a field is to see how everything has its unique place.
Then the digital revolution happened, eliminating the restrictions of physicality. For example, a real world librarian has to put a book on one and only one shelf whereas Amazon files books under as many different categories as possible. And, while traditionally the owners of the information own and control the organization of that information, in the digital realm, the users own the organization.
You can't make changes in the basic principles of organization without changing the nature of knowledge itself: What knowledge is, who gets to decide, what constitutes a subject or topic, where does knowledge's authority come from? We are in the midst of this revolution that touches how we organize our businesses, our customers' control of the information they touch, and the “who” and “what” of trust.
About the Speaker
Dr. Weinberger began his “career” in the late '70s teaching philosophy at New Jersey's Stockton State College for five years. (He has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto.) During this time he maintained his steady freelance writing of humor, reviews and intellectual and academic articles, publishing in places as diverse as The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Smithsonian, Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine and TV Guide.
In 1985, after being denied tenure because the tenure quota was filled, and after an enthusiastic but well-mannered student demonstration in his support, he became a junior marketing guy at Interleaf, an innovative start-up with new ideas on how to create and structure documents. At Interleaf he helped launch the industry's first document management system and its first electronic document publishing system, years ahead of the Web. He left Interleaf after eight years, as VP of Strategic Marketing.
He founded the one-person strategic marketing company, Evident Marketing, in 1994 and within two years counted among his clients a wide variety of companies, including RR Donnelley, Intuit, Sun Microsystems, Esther Dyson's Release 1.0 and CSC Index.
In late 1995, he joined Open Text as VP of Strategic Marketing because he saw an opportunity to help shape the way intranets are used. As part of the senior management team, Dr. Weinberger helped Open Text move from one of the first Web search engine companies (the engine behind Yahoo!) to market- and thought-leadership in Web-based collaborative software.
After helping to take Open Text public in 1996, Dr. Weinberger returned to consulting, writing and speaking, helping to found a couple of dot-coms, and serving on industry and company boards. In 2000, Perseus published The Cluetrain Manifesto, of which is is a co-author. It became a national best-seller.
In 2002, Perseus published Small Pieces Loosely Joined to enthusiastic reviews. Dr. Weinberger currently writes three weblogs, articles for Wired, Salon, USAToday, Esther Dyson's Release 1.0, and many more.
During the 2004 presidential campaign, he was Senior Internet Advisor to the Howard Dean campaign, consulting on Internet policy. In 2004 he was made a Fellow at Harvard's prestigious Berkman Institute for Internet & Society.
His book Everything is Miscellaneous was published in spring 2007 by Times Books.
The Henderson Lecture
The Lucile Kelling Henderson Lecture Series was established in 1990 to honor the memory of Lucile K. Henderson, SILS faculty member (1932-1960) and dean (1954-1960). The lecture is free and open to the public.

Talking point: The fight for equality
Talking point: The fight for equality
Comment on European Parliament Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/europeanparliament For many women, and men, International Women's Day on March 8th offered a chance to focus on a host of inequalities which, despite the promises and pledges, persist in Europe and beyond. Jobs and wages inequality, cradle to grave gender stereotyping, public and private harassment. We speak to two MEPs at the vanguard: Kartika Liotard from the Netherlands and Antonyia Parvanova from Bulgaria. First, the many-faced scourge that shadows women everywhere: physical and emotional violence. This has been a problem for centuries. It's not that easy. There are cultural, traditional and religious practices which are difficult to overcome and without effort from everybody to agree that violence against women is a breach of human rights we could not move forward. It is a very long-lasting process. Changing behaviour and everybody participating in this campaign and the second very important step, to remain disciplined in punishing the perpetrator without any exclusions or excuses. What other problems do women face and what are the roots? When you look at work you see that there is still an imbalance. In decision-making jobs, only 12% are women. In the higher paid jobs, for example, there are far more men. In the jobs where women are in the majority, 70% are jobs that are paid less. Progress on women's rights has been slow. What are today's solutions? I'm in support of quotas because I'm a very pragmatic person, not just being a woman but being a medical doctor, and if something is not resolved by itself or by the efforts made so far, I believe the next step should be taken. If for so many years the states have not reached a better representation of women, or an equal representation of women, on boards, then we probably need legislation. If we had more women, we probably wouldn't have the economic crisis because there is scientific proof actually that women take wiser and more responsible decisions. Firstly, a quota and, secondly, people should not forget that there is still a problem with stereotyping. So give good information, start already at schools with programmes which do not push girls in one direction and boys in another. And I think the media and especially commercials in which you still see women used as sex objects and things like that... I think we should really take care as it's mostly the young people who you can teach to live without gender stereotyping. So I think we should start there.
