There were no immediate reports of new casualties or serious damage, but the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was felt in El Salvador and neighboring Costa Rica. The new tremor, centered 34 miles (56 kilometers) south of the capital city of Managua, surprised people at restaurants and supermarkets, where the shelves swayed strongly, throwing many products to the ground. It also disrupted the water service in many towns around the capital, where people continued to feel aftershocks as the government deployed soldiers and police officers to oversee emergency response. Firefighters paid visits to villages south of Managua and reported seeing cracking in the walls of houses and other buildings. "There are a lot of homes that will have to be demolished completely," said Rosario Murillo, government spokeswoman and Nicaragua's first lady. Earlier, the government raised the number of people injured in the Thursday evening quake from 23 to 200. It also said that a 23-year-old woman had died of an apparent heart attack after the quake. No deaths had been reported as a result of Friday's shake. Although the magnitude of Friday's earthquake was higher, it struck much deeper, making it less likely to cause damage. In the capital city of Managua, 300 homes were damaged and at least 20 were destroyed by Thursday's quake, said one of the mayor's deputies, Fidel Moreno. Authorities ordered the demolition of two old buildings that had withstood the earthquake of 1972 that killed 10,000 people. Hospitals began discharging patients with minor illnesses so they could have beds available in the event of injuries from an aftershock or new quake. President Daniel Ortega said that he raised the country's alert level to red, meaning government officials were evacuating everyone at risk of harm from aftershocks or new quake. The alert also meant schools and businesses closed in the capital and in the northwestern city of Leon. There was much less traffic in the streets. Nicaragua turns to alternative energy to stop dependancy on oil imports 2009 News
Windmills designed to generate power for future generations. Nicaragua needs to turn to alternative energy. The country has successfully put an end to rolling blackouts that frequently left the country without power for hours but the government is struggling to pay energy costs. Oil prices have peaked at more than $147 during the last year. Nearly 80 percent of the oil Nicaragua consumes is provided at a discount by Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez is a close ally of the Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega. Now energy-starved Nicaragua is turning to wind as it tries to reduce its dependency on oil-based power. In 2008 the country began operating 19 windmills. It s part of Nicaragua s efforts to reduce its dependence on oil-based energy to just 3 percent by 2013. The 126-metre 410-feet high windmills installed by Suzlon Energy Ltd. of Pune India were set up on the edge of Lake Nicaragua. They sit in the shadow of the twin volcanoes Concepcion and Maderas on the lake s Ometepe Island and have become a tourist attraction of sorts. The country has also turned to geothermal power from volcanoes hydroelectric power generated by rivers and sugarcane based ethanol. Those sources provide 34 percent of Nicaragua s energy. Construction Manager Jose Angel Prati Engineer is behind the idea but expresses concerns about the long term financing of the green policies. There is a business philosophy of renewable and green energy. But of course you also have to find a financial balance. Because you cannot keep the dream save the planet if you don t have good economic support. Energy Minister Emilio Rappaccioli says the $90 million project contributes to 6 percent of the country s total energy needs. Even if oil prices remained at current prices and even though we are producing oil from here to about 6 7 years we will not be using oil to generate energy. Rappaccioli says the project will save about $9 million a year in fuel costs at current prices. The lead developer on the operation is Arctas Capital Group LP of Houston Texas which says it is in advanced stages of development for another 40-megawatt installation.- published: 04 Nov 2013

Chinese company to build a $40 billion Nicaraguan canal
Originally published on December XX, 2013 Sign up for a free trial of News Direct's animated news graphics at http://newsdirect.nma.com.tw/Reuters.aspx Nicaragua is rapidly moving ahead with a plan to allow Chinese company HKND Group to build a huge canal connecting the country's Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The $40 billion Nicaraguan canal project is expected to begin construction by the end of 2014 and could be completed by 2020. Beginning at the Pacific coast port of Brito, ships will cross Lake Nicaragua, before snaking through the jungle towards the country's Caribbean lowlands and the town of Bluefields on the eastern Coast. The 286-kilometer-long canal will be more than three times the length of the Panama Canal. It needs to earn $1 billion annually to turn a profit, meaning it would have to immediately draw half of the Panama canal's current ship traffic. The Nicaraguan canal will measure 83 meters in width, 27.6 meters in depth and is designed for 400,000-ton-class vessels whereas the Panama Canal only allows vessels with a capacity below 150,000 tons. The Nicaraguan canal will accommodate large LNG carriers and oil tankers from the US and Venezuela heading toward China. The canal is expected to generate annual revenue of at least $5.5 billion, and could capture 4.5% of global cargo shipping traffic. The HKND Group will pay Nicaragua $10 million a year for 10 years and gradually transfer ownership to Nicaragua over a century. The project is said to be able to double Nicaragua's $10 billion GDP by 2018. The deal also allows the company to build tax-free side projects including ports on Nicaragua's Pacific and Atlantic coasts, an oil pipeline bisecting the country, two free-trade zones and a cargo railway and an international airport. However, environmental experts argue that the canal project could cause profound ecological damage to the country.- published: 24 Jan 2014

The Current Account: Cost of Living Back in the News
Pay, wages, remuneration -- call it what you like, but the cost of living is back in the news. This week we've seen mixed research as to whether workers' wages are rising alongside the UK's economy. According to research from professional services firm Towers Watson, net pay growth will hit 0.4% throughout the year -- the highest level for two years. Towers Watson said despite UK companies suggesting they will reduce pay rises from 3% last year to 2.5% this year across all professional employee levels, Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is now expected to average 2.1% over the course of 2014. But a separate study from jobs site Adzuna.co.uk, the average advertised salary was £31,818 ($53,597, €38,645) in March 2014 -- 0.6% lower than in February, and 5.3% lower than March 2013. Factor in inflation, and average salaries have fallen by £2,358 in real terms over the same period. These figures have political ramifications. Ed Miliband's Labour Party is continuing to attack the government over the so-called 'cost of living crisis'. But the Tories and Lib Dems have countered the Labour Party leader's- published: 04 May 2014

With military action to protect non-NATO states effectively ruled out, current and former officials say sanctions and isolation provide the best - and perhaps only - way to pressure Moscow. Ramping up the pressure on the rich and powerful around President Vladimir Putin, they say, might in time push him towards a much more conciliatory approach But that, they concede, could prove a long game, and some both in and outside government worry that a more isolated Russia may simply become both more nationalist and self-sufficient. Putting Putin under more pressure, they worry, may give him even more incentive to take a populist, more aggressive approach. Ultimately, Moscow's commitment to rebuild the former USSR as its own unilateral sphere of influence may outstrip the determination of Washington and its European allies to stop it. Experts say Moscow has been infiltrating its neighbors ever more deeply, building its influence amongst security forces, government officials and politicians. That, some say, allows it to stir up instability in locations like eastern Ukraine and create both confusion and potential preconditions to invade. "What we're seeing here is a new form of warfare and part of a concerted strategy," said Chris Donnelly, a former senior adviser to NATO on Russia and now director of the Institute for Statecraft in London. "Either we stand up to it or we let it happen. So far the response has been totally inadequate." With Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula now largely seen an irreversible fait accompli, many now see more confrontation over the years to come. In a March 18 speech following the Crimea intervention, Putin made it clear he would be willing to use force to safeguard the interests of Russian-speaking minorities. The breakup of the USSR left some 25 million ethnic Russians outside the borders of the Russian Federation, concentrated in places like Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Central Asian and Baltic states and breakaway enclaves in Georgia and Moldova. Tens of millions more - classified in their old Soviet passports as ethnic Ukrainians, Belarussians or others - speak Russian as their first language. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was shallow at 12.5 miles below the seabed and struck about 100 km northwest of the mining port of Iquique near the Peruvian border. The Chilean navy said the first tsunami wave had hit the coast within 45 minutes of the quake. Authorities evacuated part of the coast and a tsunami warning was issued for all of South and Central America's Pacific coast. Chile is the world's No. 1 copper producer but key mining firms said there was no serious damage to their operations. In 2010, an 8.8-magnitude quake triggered a tsunami that devastated several coastal towns in central-south Chile, a disaster that killed 526 people. Chile's ONEMI emergency office said late on Tuesday that landslides were partially blocking some roads and highways, and local radio stations said power went out in Iquique, but the government said it had no reports of deaths or injuries. Iquique is a key copper exporting port, close to Chile's main copper mines. State-owned miner Codelco reported no harm to its workers or mines, and said its operations in northern Chile were normal. Mining company BHP Billiton said it had not received reports of damage to mines. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the coasts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua were also at risk. "An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," it said. Authorities in Peru started evacuating communities in the southern coastal region of Ica, RPP radio reported.
