Newry
Coordinates: 54°10′34″N 6°20′56″W / 54.176°N 6.349°W / 54.176; -6.349
Newry (/ˈnjʊəri/;from Irish: An Iúraigh) is a city in Northern Ireland, 34 miles (55 km) from Belfast and 67 miles (108 km) from Dublin. It had a population of 29,946 in 2011.
Newry was founded in 1144 alongside a Cistercian monastery, although there are references to earlier settlements in the area. It is one of Ireland's oldest towns.
Newry is at the entry to the "Gap of the North", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. It grew as a market town and a garrison and became a port in 1742 when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first summit-level canal built in Ireland or Great Britain. In 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations, Newry was granted city status along with Lisburn.
Name
The name Newry derives from an anglicisation of An Iúraigh, an oblique form of An Iúrach, which means "the grove of yew trees".
The modern Irish name for Newry is An tIúr (pronounced [ən̠ʲ tʲuːɾˠ]), which means "the yew tree". An tIúr is an abbreviation of Iúr Cinn Trá, which itself means "yew tree at the head of the strand". This relates to an apocryphal story that Saint Patrick planted a yew tree there in the 5th century.

Newry is a civil parish in County Down and County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is situated in the historic baronies of Iveagh Upper, Lower Half (one townland) and Lordship of Newry in County Down and the baronies of Orior Upper and Oneilland West (two townlands) in County Armagh.

Noel Thompson presents BBC Northern Ireland coverage of the 2007 assembly elections, assisted by Mark Carruthers and Mark Devenport. Coming into these elections the Assembly had been suspended since October 2002, but a breakthrough had been made at the St Andrews Agreement of October 2006 in which the DUP agreed in principle to share power with Sinn Féin, in return for Republicans agreeing to support the Police Service of Northern Ireland. The general election was held on Wednesday 7 March, with six MLAs elected from each UK Parliament constituency through the Single Transferrable Vote system. As a result the count lasted two days. Here is the start of the coverage, from 12 noon on Thursday 8 March. No results are declared during this first hour.

MLA art on display at Parliament Buildings
Thirty six MLAs entered a MAC (Metropolitan Art Centre) competition which sought poems, paintings, drawings inspired by constituencies, political philosophy or simply a beautiful view. This was the first ever exhibition of its kind in the UK or Ireland. A total of 44 pieces of artwork were submitted and the panel of judges, including Wendy Austin, Eamonn Mallie and Neil Shawcross, were impressed with the high standard of work across the board. South Antrim MLA Danny Kinahan was awarded overall prize with his painting, 'An attempt at homage to Basil Blackshaw'. A poem entitled 'The peloton of hope' by South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt and a photograph of Mussdenden Temple taken by East Londonderry MLA David McClarty were among the other winners.

Sections of the Co Down city of Newry are under water following a night of heavy rain.
The scenes come after an amber warning for rain in Northern Ireland overnight, just ahead of the expected arrival of Storm Ciaran across the UK and Ireland on Wednesday.
Newry’s canal burst its banks, flooding Sugar Island, Kildare Street, Canal Quay and part of Bridge Street.

Newry (/ˈnjʊəri/;from Irish: An Iúraigh) is a city in Northern Ireland, 34 miles (55 km) from Belfast and 67 miles (108 km) from Dublin. It had a population of 29,946 in 2011.
Newry was founded in 1144 alongside a Cistercian monastery, although there are references to earlier settlements in the area. It is one of Ireland's oldest towns.
Newry is at the entry to the "Gap of the North", close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. It grew as a market town and a garrison and became a port in 1742 when it was linked to Lough Neagh by the first summit-level canal built in Ireland or Great Britain. In 2002, as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations, Newry was granted city status along with Lisburn.
Name
The name Newry derives from an anglicisation of An Iúraigh, an oblique form of An Iúrach, which means "the grove of yew trees".
The modern Irish name for Newry is An tIúr (pronounced [ən̠ʲ tʲuːɾˠ]), which means "the yew tree". An tIúr is an abbreviation of Iúr Cinn Trá, which itself means "yew tree at the head of the strand". This relates to an apocryphal story that Saint Patrick planted a yew tree there in the 5th century.

Coming into these elections the Assembly had been suspended since October 2002, but a breakthrough had been made at the St Andrews Agreement of October 2006 in which the DUP agreed in principle to share power with Sinn Féin, in return for Republicans agreeing to support the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
The general election was held on Wednesday 7 March, with six MLAs elected from each UK Parliament constituency through the Single Transferrable Vote system. As a result the count lasted two days. Here is the start of the coverage, from 12 noon on Thursday 8 March. No results are declared during this first hour.

Thirty six MLAs entered a MAC (Metropolitan Art Centre) competition which sought poems, paintings, drawings inspired by constituencies, political philosophy or simply a beautiful view. This was the first ever exhibition of its kind in the UK or Ireland. A total of 44 pieces of artwork were submitted and the panel of judges, including Wendy Austin, Eamonn Mallie and Neil Shawcross, were impressed with the high standard of work across the board.
South Antrim MLA Danny Kinahan was awarded overall prize with his painting, 'An attempt at homage to Basil Blackshaw'. A poem entitled 'The peloton of hope' by South Belfast MLA Conall McDevitt and a photograph of Mussdenden Temple taken by East Londonderry MLA David McClarty were among the other winners.
