Hudson River School of American Landscape Painting
Hudson River School of American Landscape Painting
David Dearinger, a curator at the Boston Athenaeum, lectures on history and technique of the the Hudson River School style of landscape painting. The Hudson River School resulted from the earliest attempts by American artists to find a truly "American" theme and style. It was born in the 1820s in the paintings of Thomas Cole and thrived through the 1850s in the work of Asher Durand, John Kensett, Sanford Gifford, Fitzhugh Lane, and Frederic Edwin Church. Dr Dearinger traces the birth and development of the style using key examples of paintings by these and other artists, gives an overview of the movement's historiography, discusses contemporary critical responses to it, and comments on the waning and eventual demise of the style in the 1870s. strongDavid Dearinger/strong is Susan Morse Hilles Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Boston Athenaeum. An art historian and curator, he received his PhD from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, with a specialty in nineteenth-century American art. He taught art history in New York at Brooklyn College, Hunter College and, for many years, at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Before coming to Boston, he was chief curator at the National Academy of Design in New York. He has published and lectured widely on the history of American painting and sculpture.- published: 20 Mar 2014

Eric Zener was born in 1966 in Astoria, Oregon, to a psychologist father and a violinist mother who played for the San Francisco Symphony.
Is an American photorealist artist best known for figure paintings of lone subjects, often in or about swimming pools.
He grew up in the seaside community of Encinitas, California. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara he worked briefly as a buyer for a department store, before backpacking around the world for nearly two years, bartering paintings for room and board.
In 1991 he settled in San Francisco.
Zener has three children, the first born in approximately 1998, the second in approximately 2002, and the 3rd in 2009.
As of 2009 he lives with his wife, business partner, and frequent model, Julie, in Mill Valley, California.
He paints mostly out of a studio in San Francisco.
Zener's works have been exhibited and sold throughout the United States, and internationally, and are part of a number of prominent private and corporate art collections.
Zener is a self-taught artist.
His paintings, mostly in oil, are in a photorealist or "super-realist" style Zener describes as "Contemporary Renaissance".
In 2003, while living in the Costa Brava region of Spain, Zener became interested in watching bathers, and began a series of paintings of water, and of people interacting with water.
Many paintings from this period depict women swimming underwater amidst air bubbles, or diving into the water, and have been described as reminiscent of Hudson River School and Barbizon School painters.
For a second, more "experimental" series of water images, Zener painted over photographic transparencies that had been mounted on a wooden box covered with silver leaf, then covered with resin.
Other subjects for Zener have included beach scenes, and businessmen in various unexpected settings, such as by swimming pools or on tightropes.

Jacob Collins was born on 11, august 1964 in the New York City.
Is an American realist painter.
Lives and works in New York City.
He is a leading figure of the contemporary classical art revival.
He founded the Water Street Atelier, the Grand Central Academy of Art and the Hudson River Fellowship.
He comes from a family of artists and scholars. His great-uncle was Meyer Schapiro.
As a child, he started copying works by Old Masters in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
From a young age, Collins knew that he wanted to be an artist, although his interest and skill lay in a classical style that was out of favor in the late 20th century.
Moving away from Modernism, he identified instead with works of 15th–19th century masters and their techniques and aesthetics.
He studied in Europe and at the New York Studio School following his graduation from The Dalton School. He earned a BA in History from Columbia, attended the New York Academy of Art (NYAA) and the Art Students League of New York.
His teachers included painters Aaron Kurzen, Ted Seth Jacobs, and Michael Aviano and the sculptor Martine Vaugel.
This education brought together Collins' modernist background and his classical inclinations. He also copied from the masters at the Musée du Louvre, the Museo del Prado and the Uffizi Gallery.
After his studies, his New York studio became the center of a new evolving classical art scene. These painters worked to regain the skills and spirit of Classical art. A number of them have gone on to successful careers and leadership roles in the traditional realist art movement.
The Paint Group at Hirschl & Adler Modern in New York, NY was a significant exhibition of the works of this group.
During this period, Collins painted portrait commissions and started showing professionally at the Salander-O'Reilly Galleries in New York City.
In the early 1990s, he founded the Water Street Atelier, which has trained dozens of artists in a classical manner.
These artists include Juliette Aristides, Michael Grimaldi, Camie Davis, Kate Lehman, Travis Schlaht, Arantzazu Martínez, Dan Thompson, Tony Mastromatteo, Sarah Lamb, Edward Minoff, Nicholas Hiltner, Scott Waddell, Joshua LaRock, Colleen Barry, Will St. John, Douglas Flynt and Patricia Watwood. He is the director of the Grand Central Academy of Art, a new school in New York City and a hub of the classical revival art scene.
The Grand Central Academy operates in affiliation with the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America. In 2007, he created the Hudson River Fellowship.
The purpose of this school is to facilitate the building of a new movement of American art, modeling itself after the artistic, social and spiritual values of the Hudson River School painters.
He lives and paints in New York City. He and his wife, the writer Ann Brashares, have four children.
Jacob Collins’ style is considered Classical Realism, and his subject matter focuses on the figure, portraiture, still life and landscape as well as the occasional interior. Collins’ nude figurative works, especially, reveal a point of view that is distinctly contemporary, and his setups are simple, incorporating at most a bed sheet and a length of fabric.
Collins’ drawing and paintings have been shown with museums and galleries in North America and Europe, and he has been commissioned to paint portraits of J. Paul Getty, Jr., President George H.W. Bush and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger.
