Monotheism vs. Polytheism (& Henotheism)
Monotheism vs. Polytheism (& Henotheism)
Gino Glamour presents in this video the definitions of "monotheism", "polytheism" and also "henotheism"."Monotheism" corresponds to the belief in the existence of only one god. It's the most common type of quantitative theism, even though it wasn't always that way. Some millennia ago, "polytheism", the belief that there's more than one god, whether it's two gods ("ditheism"), three gods ("tritheism") or any number of gods higher than one, was predominant. Within "polytheism", there's "henotheism", a form of "polytheism" where, despite the belief that there's more than one god, one of the gods stands out compared to all others in terms of powers (thus being worthier of devotion), or that is the only one worthy of worship. Monotheism, Disbelief and the Hebrew Bible, with Francesca Stavrakopoulou
In the third interview in our series on ancient religious scepticism, Professor Tim Whitmarsh talks to Professor Francesca Stavrakopoulou from the University of Exeter about monotheism and disbelief in the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament. They discuss how these slippery concepts might be seen to intersect with the historical events of the formative 'Persian period' (mid-6th to mid-4th century BCE), when Cyrus the Great allowed Jerusalem elites to return to their city after a period of exile in Babylon. Professor Stavrakopoulou explains how the issue of belief vs disbelief is a Christian, confessional notion that cannot be easily retrojected onto the world of the Hebrew bible - a world that was, we discover, animated by debates about the relative power and strength of different divine beings. And she goes on to sketch the polytheistic backdrop to early Judaism with reference to the intriguing storyline of the Book of Job, in which we find Yahweh at a council of deities to test the religious steadfastness of the book's unlucky protagonist....- published: 20 Sep 2013

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church gives a more restricted definition: "belief in one personal and transcendent God", as opposed to polytheism and pantheism. A distinction may be made between exclusive monotheism, exemplified by Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and both inclusive monotheism and pluriform monotheism which, while recognising many distinct gods, postulate some underlying unity. In this broader sense of the word, monotheistic religions include Atenism, the Bahá'í Faith, Cao Dai, Cheondoism (Cheondogyo), Deism, Eckankar, Hinduism (Vaishnavism, Shivaism), Ravidassia, Seicho no Ie, Sikhism, Tenrikyo and Zoroastrianism. Origin and development: The word monotheism is derived from the Greek μόνος (monos) meaning "single" and θεός (theos) meaning "god". The English term was first used by Henry More (1614--1687). According to Christian tradition, monotheism was the original religion of humanity but was generally lost after the so-called fall of man. This theory was largely abandoned in the 19th century in favour of an evolutionary progression from animism via polytheism to monotheism, but by 1974 this theory was less widely held.[2] Austrian anthropologist Wilhelm Schmidt had postulated an Urmonotheismus, "original" or "primitive monotheism." in the 1910s. It was objected that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam had grown up in opposition to polytheism as had Greek philosophical monotheism. Furthermore, while belief in a "high god" is not universal, it is found in many parts of Africa and numerous other areas of the world. Two examples of monolatrism developing from polytheism are the Aten cult in the reign of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, as well as the rise of Marduk from the tutelary of Babylon to the claim of universal supremacy. In Zoroastrianism, Ahura Mazda appears as a supreme and transcendental deity. Depending on the date of Zoroaster (usually placed in the early Iron Age), this may be one of the earliest documented instances of the emergence of monism in an Indo-European religion. TYRANT Akhenaten - Claimed Godhood, Did NOT Invent Monotheism, & Had MANY Wives
TYRANT Akhenaten - Claimed Godhood, Did NOT Invent Monotheism, & Had MANY Wives
***This is used under FAIR USE.*** Though many uncredentialed and unqualified sales artists who focus on ancient Egypt and Akhenaten will say that he invented monotheism, that is simply NOT true at all. EVERY polytheistic deity in Egypt was ALWAYS traced back to ONE so called "all creator" force, they named Amun (Amen, Amon, Amen-Ra, etc...) NO Egyptian theology ever said that the various deities just created themselves or sprang out of nowhere, they were ALWAYS traced back to only ONE all creator source, therefore Egypt had a version of monotheism LONG before Akhenaten even existed. This clip shows what true TYRANNY is all about, as he set himself up as a "new god" representing Aten the sun god in the flesh on earth. Many also like to "pretend" that he and the so called "royal wife" Nefertiti were some great couple in love with each other, when in REALITY, Akhenaten had a whole HIRAM full of whores. One of the most famous "other women" of Akhenaten was Kia, who may very well have had her own personal rivalry with Nefertiti as this video shows.
