Learning Chanting - Angulimāla Paritta in Pāli & English.
Learning the chanting of Angulimāla Paritta (Protective Chant of Angulimāla) in Pāli & English. A recital to bless expectant mothers for easy childbirth. Venerable Angulimāla, on one of his usual daily rounds for alms, came upon a house where he heard the sharp cries of an expectant mother undergoing protracted labor. Feeling rather inadequate and helpless, he reported the incident to the Buddha. The Buddha then instructed Venerable Angulimāla to return to the same house to give a recital whereupon the woman delivered her baby without further difficulties. Learning Verses - SUKHA VAGGA in Pāli & English
Learning to recite the verses in SUKHA VAGGA (HAPPINESS) of THE DHAMMAPADA in Pāli & English. Further meanings (pls. rely on your own investigation):- "pleasure" (V 206-207) -- refers to Sukha [Pali] i.e. non-sensual happiness or joy. "to live with them is always a pleasure" (V 206) -- should not be mistaken for cohabit as ariyas are holy ones who observe celibacy to lead a holy life. "association with the wise is a pleasure (sukha)" (V 207) -- having the wise as kalyana mitra or spiritual friend. Notes:- Verse 198 Live in good health -- free from the disease of passions. Verse 200 without any impediments (kiñcana) -- such as lust, hatred, and delusion which are hindrances to spiritual progress. Verse 202 No ill like the body (pañcakkhandha) -- the five Aggregates. Verse 203 Hunger -- ordinary diseases are usually curable by a suitable remedy, but hunger has to be appeased daily. Aggregates are the greatest ill -- here Saṃkhāra is used in the sense of khandha, the five Aggregates - namely, the form (rūpa), feeling (vedanā), perception (saññā), mental states (saṃkhāra), and consciousness (viññanā). The so-called being is composed of these five constituent parts. Both khandha and saṃkhāra are used to denote these five conditioned things. Excluding feeling and perception, the remaining fifty mental states are implied by the term saṃkhāra in the five Aggregates. Verse 208 the wise (paññaṃ) -- possessed of mundane and supramundane knowledge (Commentary). the learned (bahussutaṃ) -- endowed with the teaching and the realization (Commentary). the enduring (dhorayhasilaṃ) -- literally, engaged in the bearing of the yoke (leading to Nibbāna) (Commentary). the dutiful (vatavantaṃ) -- replete with morality (sīla) and ascetic practices (dhutaṅga). the Ariya -- far removed from passions. The Dhammapada contains stories with beautiful illustrations and utterances of the Buddha in verses which elucidates the wide scope and meaning of the 423 verses of wisdom of the Dhammapada and its essential advice is timeless and precious. "Hence the Dhammapada may be considered to be a work that reaches out to all of humanity, which underscores our common heritage on this earth. The Dhammapada transcends narrow sectarian loyalties. It is indeed a book for all mankind." - Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera (The text and some of the images therein are extracted from the hard-cover book "The Dhammapada" by Dr. K. Learning Chanting - Ātānatiya Paritta in Pāli & English.
Learning the chanting of Ātānatiya Paritta (the Discourse for Protection Against Evil Spirits and gaining health and happiness) in Pāli & English. Gotama the Buddha preached this Dhamma which removed all suffering. Homage to this son of Sakyas (Gotama Buddha) from whose body issued rays of light and who was glorious. In this world, those who have extinguished all the flames of passions and have thoroughly seen things as they really are -- these persons being Arahants never slander. They are great and free from fear. All these Buddhas are endowed with ten kinds of strength and wisdom of fearlessness. All these Buddhas proclaim that they possess the state of Omniscience. All these Supreme Sages shine with surrounding halos; all these Buddhas are Omniscient. All these Buddhas have extinguished the defilement and they are conquerors. "Indeed an arahant and he teaches Dhamma for the realization of arahantship." Learning Verses - JARĀ VAGGA in Pāli & English
Learning to recite the verses in JARĀ VAGGA (OLD AGE) of THE DHAMMAPADA in Pāli & English. Notes:- Verse 146 when the world is ever burning -- this world is perpetually consumed with the flames of passions. It is completely shrouded by the veil of ignorance, Being placed in such a world, the wise should try to seek the light of wisdom. Verse 151 the Dhamma -- the nine supramundane states are the four Paths, the four Fruits and Nibbāna. the Saints -- such as the Buddhas. Verses 153-154 These two verses, the first paean of joy (udāna) uttered by the Buddha immediately after His Enlightenment, are not found elsewhere. The Venerable Ānanda heard them from the lips of the Buddha and they have been inserted here. Here the Buddha admits his past wanderings in existence which entails suffering, a fact which evidently proves the belief in rebirth. He was compelled to wander, and consequently to suffer, so long as he could not discover the architect who built this house, the body. In His final birth He discovered by His own intuitive wisdom the elusive architect dwelling not outside but within the recesses of His own heart. The architect was Craving or Attachment (tanhā) a self-created force, a mental element latent in all. The discovery of the architect is the eradication of craving by attaining Arahanthood which, in this utterance, is alluded to as the end of craving. The rafters of this self-created house are the defilements (kilesa). The ridge-pole that supports the rafters is ignorance (avijjā), the root cause of all defilement. The shattering of the ridge-pole of ignorance by wisdom results in the complete demolition of the house. The ridge-pole and the rafters are the material with which the architect builds this undesired house. With their destruction the architect is deprived of the wherewithal to rebuild the house which is not wanted. With the demolition of the house the mind attains the Unconditional which is Nibbāna. Learning Verses - BHIKKHU VAGGA in Pāli & English
Learning to recite the verses in BHIKKHU VAGGA (CRAVING) of THE DHAMMAPADA in Pāli & English. A bhikkhu is expected to observe the four kinds of Higher Morality:- 1.Pātimokkha Sīla -- the fundamental moral code. 2.Indriyasamvara Sīla -- morality pertaining to sense-restraint. 3.Ājivapārisuddhi Sīla -- morality pertaining to purity of livelihood. 4.Paccayasannissita Sīla -- morality pertaining to the use of necessaries of life. These four kinds of morality are collectively known as Sīla Visuddhi (Purity of Virtue). ~ Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera Insight (Vipassanā) is the intuitive light flashing forth and exposing the truth of impermanency (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha), and no soul (anattā). Discipline regulates words and deeds; concentration controls the mind, but it is Insight that perceives things as they are and not what they appear to be. Insight is not the result of mere intellectual understanding, but is won through direct meditative observation of one's own bodily and mental processes. ~ Ven. Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda Nayaka Maha Thera Notes:- Verse 361 the bhikkhu -- bhikkhu is exclusively a Buddhist term. "Mendicant monk" may be suggested as the best English equivalent. restrained in every way -- that is, in all senses, literally, everywhere. Verse 363 he who speaks wisely -- manta here means wisdom. Verse 365 concentration -- samādhi -- both mundane and supramundane concentration. Verses 368-376 who abides in loving-kindness -- having developed the third and fourth jhānas (ecstasies) with Mettā (loving-kindness) as the object of meditation. state of peace and happiness -- that is, Nibbāna. empty this boat -- the boat resembles the body, water resembles bad thoughts. five cut off -- they are the five fetters (orambhāgiya samyojana) that pertain to this shore-namely, self-illusion (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), indulgence in (wrongful) rites and ceremonies (silabbataparāmāsa), sense-desire (kāmarāga), and hatred (patigha). five give up -- they are the five fetters that pertain to the Farther Shore (uddhambhāgiyasamyojana), namely, attachment to the Realms of Form (rūparāga), attachment to the Formless Realms (arūparāga) conceit (māna), restlessness (uddhacca), and ignorance (avijjā). five further cultivate -- namely, confidence (saddhā) mindfulness (sati), effort (viriya), concentration (samādhi), and wisdom (paññā). These five factors have to be cultivated if one desires to destroy the fetters. beyond the five bonds -- see note under V. 342 a joy transcending that of men -- amānusi rati = the eight Attainments (aṭṭhasamāpatti), the four Rūpa Jhānas and the four Arūpa Jhānas. "those who know" that (reflection) -- as it leads to Nibbāna. pātimokkha -- which deals with the rules that a bhikkhu is bound to observe. The Dhammapada contains stories with beautiful illustrations and utterances of the Buddha in verses which elucidates the wide scope and meaning of the 423 verses of wisdom of the Dhammapada and its essential advice is timeless and precious. Learning to recite the verses in NĀGA VAGGA (THE ELEPHANT) of THE DHAMMAPADA in Pāli & English. Notes:- Verse 330 Sahāyatā -- by this term are meant morality, austere practices, insight, Paths, Fruits and Nibbana (Commentary) (V 61) Verse 332 Matteyyatā -- does not mean motherhood or "to have a mother". The Commentarial explanation is good conduct (sammā-patipatti) towards the mother, that is, ministering to the mother. The other terms are similarly explained. It is good to minister unto the Noble Ones -- the Buddha, the Arahants, and so on. Learning the chanting of Ratana Sutta Paritta (The Discourse on the Jewels - Recital to avert evil) in Pāli & English. The Buddha uttered the following powerful and effective Sutta (discourse) on His visit to the epidemic-stricken township of Vesāli to bless victims to protect them from famine, sickness, evil spirits and other kinds of misfortune. By the power of this discourse, three types of disasters that broke out due to epidemic disease, inhuman beings and famine, quickly disappeared. Reflection of all the virtues of the Buddha "commencing from the time of His aspiration for Buddhahood in the presence of Buddha Dipankara:- His practices of the thirty perfections comprising -- 1. ten ordinary perfections, 2. ten superior perfections and 3. ten supreme perfections, 4. the five sacrifices; 5. the three modes of practice comprising the practice for the welfare of the world, for the welfare of relatives, and for the benefit of Buddhahood, 6. and in His last Life, taking conception in His mother's womb, 7. Learning the chanting of Mora Paritta (The Peacock's Prayer For Protection) in Pāli & English. The Mora Paritta is a peacock's protective chant. The Great Being (Bodhisatta), who was reborn as a peacock while he was fulfilling the necessary three grades of perfections for Buddhahood, has recited this Paritta for his own protection. This is also found in the Mora Jataka, where the Bodhisatta is born as a golden hued peacock. In the Jataka, the paritta given here is uttered by the peacock.
