Carbon Observing Mission Launches on This Week @NASA
NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 mission is underway. Launched from California's Vandenberg Air Force Base, OCO-2 will help track our impact on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and help us better understand the various human-made and natural sources of CO-2. This is one of five Earth-observing missions scheduled in 2014 -- the most Earth-focused missions launched in a single year, in more than a decade. Also, Saucer-shaped vehicle tested, Cygnus Orb-2 launch update, Space Launch System model tests and 10 years exploring Saturn.- published: 03 Jul 2014

NASA launches satellite to observe Earth's "breathing"
NASA launched a new satellite into orbit Wednesday, hoping the technology will allow the space agency to see the Earth breathing. Technology on board the OCO-2 satellite lets carbon dioxide be measured on a global level, instead of by piecing together data from multiple sources as is currently done. RT's Ameera David has more details on how the system works and why it is so important. NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) Launch From Vandenberg Air Force Base
NASA's first spacecraft dedicated to studying carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere was successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. OCO-2 will be collecting a great number of high-resolution measurements, which will provide a greater spatial distribution of CO2 over the entire globe, in short, a bigger, clearer, more complete picture of global CO2. These measurements will be combined with data from the ground-based network to provide scientists with the information that they need to better understand the processes that regulate atmospheric CO2 and its role in the carbon cycle.- published: 02 Jul 2014

Footage of NASA's OCO-2 satellite launching from Vandenberg AFB early yesterday morning, July 2, 2014. Time-lapse and live HD video, entirely from the night of July 1/2, 2014. The original July 1 launch was delayed 24 hours due to a technical glitch in the water lines for an acoustic suppression system in the launch pad. The delay to yesterday morning, July 2, enabling me to pick a new shooting location above the coastal fog on the following night. NASA | STEREO Solar Conjunction
NASA | STEREO Solar Conjunction
Since February 2011, the two spacecraft of NASA's the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory or STEREO mission have been providing scientists with unprecedented views of the far side of the sun. The spacecraft travel at different speeds. This means that over time, the satellites become increasingly out of sync, appearing from Earth's perspective to drift farther apart, able to observe first the sides and eventually the far side of the sun. Now they are nearing each other once again, this time on the other side of the sun. During this period when the sun blocks Earth's view -- a geometrical position known in astronomy as a superior conjunction -- radio receivers on Earth will not be able to distinguish STEREO's signal from the sun's radiation. Communication with the spacecraft will cease and the satellites will both go into safe mode without collecting data for a time. This will happen for STEREO-Ahead from March 24 to July 7, 2015. STEREO-Behind will be in superior conjunction from Jan. 22 to March 23, 2015. At least one spacecraft, therefore, will always be collecting data. Before this occurs, the heating from the sun will also begin to affect - though not shut down -- data collection. From wherever they are in space, the STEREO spacecraft aim their antenna toward Earth to send down data. This position puts the antenna fairly close to pointing at the sun, exposing the instruments to more heat than it can safely bear. The antenna can be adjusted to point in different directions, but the signal coming to Earth will be much fainter and won't allow for as much data to be downloaded. This antenna adjustment will begin on Aug. 20, 2014, for the STEREO-Ahead spacecraft and on Dec. 1, 2014, for STEREO-Behind. During this phase, STEREO instruments will continue to run 24 hours a day, but they will gather lower-resolution data than usual. Some of this data will be downloaded whenever STEREO can link up with an Earth receiver. The rest of the data will be stored on board to be downloaded when the spacecraft reach a more auspicious geometrical position in early 2016. To test for this off-pointing from the sun, STEREO-Ahead will undergo tests and not be collecting data from July 6-12, 2014. The same tests will be performed on STEREO-Behind from Sept. 29 - Oct. 6, 2014. Throughout this entire phase until 2016, at least one STEREO spacecraft will be capturing data at any one time, so scientists will have an uninterrupted record of events on the sun to coordinate with the observations of solar telescopes on the Earth side. Real time monitoring of the sun, its flares and coronal mass ejections - information used by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to help forecast space weather -- will also continue via a fleet of NASA spacecraft closer to Earth. When We Left Earth - The NASA Missions
When We Left Earth - The NASA Missions
The story of how the space missions evolved from the X-15 fighter jet in 1959 to get people into space is explained. The programs began with the Mercury missions: 7 men were selected to carry the first astronaut into space "on top of a rocket capsule". There was a rush because of competition with Russia: initially not much was known (a) whether the rockets would work, and (b) whether man could survive in space. At the beginning an ape called "Ham" was the first animal that flew. Eventually Alan Shepard was selected, BUT it is learned that the Soviet Union had been the first nation to put a man in space: Yuri Gagarin. Then John Glenn was selected in 1962 for the longest mission:5 days of weightlessness. He takes off but runs into trouble - the world waits - but the Friendship 7 flight worked and "it was obvious that the Russians are not beating us". The process moves on to a more scientific set of missions, led by Scott Carpenter, called the Aurora program. More problems arise, but are overcome. Aurora 7 is recovered. The next program are the Gemini launches, and here president Kennedy announces the goal of flying to the moon and back.Ten missions are planned. John Young and Gus Grisman are chosen. A new launch missile, the Titan was scary - "the rocket was like a controlled explosion". Engineers fix the problems. In March 1965, "it was white knuckles" when Gemini 3 was launched but the astronauts were recovered. The next big challenge was "walking in space", also known as EVA - Extra Vehicular Activity. During this time weightlessness was tested using a specially modified plane called "the vomit Comet". Spacesuit design was another problem - going from 250 degrees above zero to 250 degrees below zero rather quickly. There was still competition with the Soviets, and NASA rushed matters. It was "a risky business" with EVA training performed in secret. On Gemini 4, in 1964, Ed White made the first EVA. Then it was the "Rendezvous" effort where two spacecraft could coordinate for an eventual moon landing. Gemini 6 and Gemini 7 came within 20 feet of each other for 3 orbits. Then Gemini 7 travelled 6 million miles in 14 days. The effort weakened the astronaut's legs. Finally Dave Scott and Neil Armstrong demonstrated docking in 1966 in the Gemini 8 flight. There were problems, but recovery was achieved. There were 4 Gemini missions left. Gene Cerman and Tom Stafford flew Gemini 9. It didn't work. Neither did more Gemini attempts. Finally Buzz Aldrin, who practised weightless motion under water, on Gemini's final mission, Aldrin conducted three successful EVAs. Things were then set for the Apollo missions.- published: 02 Jul 2013

NASA's 'Flying Saucer' Fires Rocket Motor, Deploys SIAD, But Suffers Parachute Failure
After a 2 hour flight on a helium Balloon which brought the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) spacecraft, NASA's 'Flying Saucer' to 120,000 feet the Star 48B rocket motor was fired, the SIAD heat shield deployed, however during the deployment of the parachute a tanglement in the chute was seen in onboard video. LDSD was fitted with what is called SIAD-R, a giant dounaut air bag that increased the diameter of the vehicle and helped slow it down to Mach 2.5 where a supersonic parachute was to deploy ahead of a safe landing in the Pacific Ocean for recovery. These tests are to prove future technologies for landing larger craft onto Mars.- published: 28 Jun 2014

The Reason NASA Never Returned To The Moon (Full Documentary)
Watch this too: Neil Armstrong refused to swear on The Bible that he walked on the Moon. http://youtu.be/mNz3xn449RA Have you ever wondered why we haven't returned to the moon again? The truth is that NASA is hiding a very dark secret from us. Is there an "Alien Base" on the Moon? More and more people are coming forward with stories that might prove this is true. Rumors say that there is an Alien Moon Base on the far side of the moon, the side we never see from Earth. Did you ever wonder why the Moon landings stopped and why we have not tried to build a Moon Base? It does seem like a better and easier idea than a floating space station with no access to any raw materials or supplies? According to the NASA Astronaut Neil Armstrong the aliens have a base on the Moon and told us in no uncertain terms to get off and stay off the Moon! Sound far fetched? Milton Cooper, a Naval Intelligence Officer tells us that not only does the Alien Moon Base exist but the U.S. Naval Intelligence Community refers to the Alien Moon Base as "Luna," that there is a huge mining operation going on there, and that is where the aliens keep their huge mother ships while the trips to Earth are made in smaller "flying saucers". LUNA: The Alien base on the far side of the Moon. It was seen and filmed by the Apollo astronauts. A base, a mining operation using very large machines, and the very large alien craft described in sighting reports as mother ships exist there. -Milton Cooper I do not try to make any kind of profit from this video, this is just for educational purpose! NASA Space Shuttle - Documentary narrated by William Shatner HD 80min
Since 1981, NASA space shuttles have been rocketing from the Florida coast into Earth orbit. The five orbiters - Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour - have flown more than 130 times, carrying over 350 people into space and travelling more than half a billion miles, more than enough to reach Jupiter. Designed to return to Earth and land like a giant glider, the shuttle was the world's first reusable space vehicle. More than all of that, though, the shuttle program expanded the limits of human achievement and broadened our understanding of our world. It all started with STS-1, launched on April 12, 1981, just twenty years to the day after Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. When astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen launched that morning in Columbia, it was the first time in history a new spacecraft was launched on its maiden voyage with a crew aboard. For an entire generation, the space shuttle was NASA. We've watched a parade of firsts - Sally Ride, Guy Bluford, Kathy Sullivan, John Glenn and others. We've seen astronauts float free, and launch and repair spacecraft like Hubble which have fundamentally changed our understanding of the universe. In this feature, NASA looks back at the Shuttle's historic missions, the people it flew into space, and its achievements.- published: 23 May 2013
