Glenn Greenwald and Ruth Marcus Explosive Exchange over Edward Snowden and Horrible D.C. Media
January 2, 2014 - On Thursday, CNN host Jake Tapper dug into the dueling editorials in American newspapers tackling the problem of NSA leaker Edward Snowden and whether to punish him as a criminal or offer him the protections afforded a whistleblower. Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus and The Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald engaged in a brutal, heated debate over what to do about Snowden and the media culture in Washington D.C. Marcus began the debate by disagreeing with the New York Times editorial board, which called for the White House to offer Snowden clemency. She said Snowden should have faced justice in the United States rather than flee to Hong Kong and later Russia. RELATED: Greenwald Snarks at MSNBC: I Defend Snowden Like You Defend Obama '24 Hours a Day' "I think Ruth Marcus' argument exemplifies everything that's really horrible about the D.C. media," Greenwald shot back. "People in Washington continuously make excuses for those in power when they break the law." Marcus countered a claim by Greenwald, who asked why Director of National Intelligence James Clapper should not be held to account for lying to Congress about the scope of the NSA programs, by saying that she believed he should be held accountable for his actions. The pair exploded when Greenwald demanded that Marcus answer whether Clapper should be prosecuted. Greenwald called Marcus a "loyalist" of President Barack Obama's administration and asked again why American officials who lied about the NSA program should not face prosecution. "People in Washington who are well-connected to the government, like she is, do not believe that the law applies to them," Greenwald insisted. He later added that the Obama administration has been more aggressive with whistleblowers than previous administrations. "I think there has been an excessive use of the whistleblower -- an excess use of power against whistleblowers," Marcus agreed. She noted sarcastically that, because she sees the world in "grey terms," this makes her a "complete tool of the establishment." However, Marcus added that she has tried to take into account many of Snowden's leaks which have been a public service, but she asserted that many of his leaks do harm national security interests. She further asserted that Snowden's attitude is "insufferable" and "reprehensible." "You do not need to be collecting, Jake, billions of calls and emails -- billions every day -- as the NSA does," Greenwald asserted. Marcus closed by correcting Greenwald for "conflating" all of Snowden's disclosures with the efficacy of the NSA's domestic information gathering programs.- published: 03 Jan 2014

WaPo's Ruth Marcus: Scandal Has Taken 'Dangerous Turn' For Chris Christie
Washington Post opinion writer Ruth Marcus told MSNBC host Chris Jansing that the Republican Governor's Association, the committee tasked with helping elect GOP candidates to governor in November, should force New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie out of his chairmanship. Marcus said that, in the wake of the closure of two lanes of the George Washington Bridge, the allegations by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer surrounding Christie's office withholding Hurricane Sandy aid indicates that the scandals have taken a "dangerous turn" for the governor. "This is only the beginning of what seems to me, from Governor Christie's point of view, to be a very dangerous new chapter in the greater bridge saga," Marcus said. "This involves federal funds. It now involves a federal prosecutor."- published: 20 Jan 2014

Ruth Marcus: 'Thong Flashing' Monica Lewinsky Was Asking for It
On Monday, Ruth Marcus, left-leaning political columnist for the Washington Post, stepped on a rhetorical landmine. Or, that is, she would have if she was Ruth Marcus, right-leaning columnist for the Washington Post. Maybe former White House intern Monica Lewinsky was just asking for it? That is the impression that this headline and the selected pull quote will project. When Marcus was making a fairly anodyne statement about how female sexuality is routinely mischaracterized in the press when it involves a politician (intentionally so, I would submit), Marcus lamented how sexually active women are branded as either insatiably promiscuous predators or helpless victims. Marcus insisted that there is a grey area here that the majority of women occupy. Hers is the kind of milquetoast observation that would draw applause at an academic conference, or a corporate seminar on sensitivity, or anyplace where the obvious and antiseptic statements are regarded as brave and refreshingly honest. But the political media has set the cultural standard of political discourse to maximum outrage and there is no going back. With that in mind, it is clear Marcus is next in line for the buzz saw of feigned indignation. In a conversation with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell about the wrongness of comments from former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), both of whom were attacking the double standards that typify the Democratic attack on Republicans supposedly waging their "war on women," Marcus made some artless comments of her own. "There seem to me a tendency to talk about women in two ways when it comes to sex and sexual activity," Marcus asserted. "Either they are terrible victims preyed on by older men, as in Monica Lewinsky." "President [Bill] Clinton did a bad, bad thing, and Monica Lewinsky was not precisely an innocent victim," she continued. "I recall thong flashing there." "They are either innocent victims or they are sexually promiscuous, slutty low-life women," Marcus said, inventing the position of her imagined antagonist with particular fervor. "There's no women get to use sex and sexual activity and use contraception responsibly like men do." Again, there is nothing offensive about these comments, but it seems it only takes an enterprising columnist to invent the latent discriminatory instinct supposedly lurking in the subconscious of an offender in order to elevate an average undiplomatic remark into a grave incident requiring denunciation by every political figure of merit. At least, that is how it works on one end of the political spectrum. Clearly, as evidenced by Marcus' unsophisticated phrasing, the other end is more accustomed to receiving the benefit of the doubt.- published: 28 Jan 2014

Washington Post Columnist Ruth Marcus: Rand Paul Deserves 'Scrooge Award Of The Year'
On her Monday 1 p.m. ET hour show on MSNBC, host Andrea Mitchell was shocked by Senator Rand Paul's supposedly "breathtaking" observation that continually extending government unemployment benefits can cause people "to become part of this perpetual unemployed group." She incredulously asked: "It's the unemployment insurance that creates the, quote, 'dependency'?" Teeing up liberal Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus to denounce Paul's comments, Mitchell urged her to "have at it." Marcus ranted: "Can you say Scrooge? Yes, thank you for letting me have at it. My mouth dropped open when I heard that....he just wins my Scrooge award of the year." Mitchell quipped in reply: "We may have to keep that award open until Congress gets out of town." In denouncing Paul, Marcus proclaimed: "I would like to find one person out there who has been collecting unemployment for this long time who would not welcome the chance -- in this holiday season I might point out -- to have their benefits extended." That would seem to confirm the Senator's warning about government dependency. On Thursday's Daily Rundown, fill-in host Luke Russert wondered if Republicans "risk looking like Grinches over the holiday season" by opposing a minimum wage hike.
