Flash Mob: The U.S. Air Force Band at the Smithsonian
Starting with a single cellist on the floor of the National Air and Space Museum's "Milestones of Flight" gallery, and swelling to 120 musicians, The U.S. Air Force Band exhilarated museum visitors with its first-ever flash mob. The four-minute performance featured an original arrangement of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring/Joy to the World," led by the band's commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang. Unsuspecting museum visitors including tourists and school groups were astonished as instrumentalists streamed into the gallery from behind airplanes and space capsules, and vocalists burst into song from the Museum's second floor balcony.- published: 05 Dec 2013

Endangered Song Project: Smithsonian's National Zoo
#EndangeredSong #EarthDay 4/22 There are only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. That's why the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute partnered with indie rock band Portugal. The Man, bringing science and music together to distribute a previously unreleased song titled "Sumatran Tiger." The song was lathe-cut onto 400 custom poly-carbonate records designed to degrade after a certain amount of plays. There are no other copies of the song in existence. The records were sent to 400 participants asked to digitize and share the song through their social channels with the hashtag #EndangeredSong. The song will go extinct unless it's digitally reproduced. The Sumatran tiger will go extinct unless we take action. So what can you do? We need your help to share our message and raise awareness about the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and need for conservation efforts. Follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/nationalzoo), Twitter (@NationalZoo) and Instagram (@SmithsonianZoo). Scour the internet and search for the song using the #EndangeredSong on sites like SoundCloud, Radio Reddit, MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. Retweet, repost and tell everyone you know. Visit www.endangeredsong.si.edu to learn more about the initiative and how to help perpetuate the song. Conservation is a multigenerational issue that needs a multigenerational solution. We must reach and inspire the next generation of conservationists. If you're at home or at your desk, with your smart phone in hand—you can make a difference. Together, we can ignite change for conservation.- published: 22 Apr 2014

Smithsonian's Lions Cubs GoPro Video
Last week, keepers at the Smithsonian's Great Cats exhibit put a GoPro camera in the den with Naba's cubs while mom was outside enjoying the sunshine. At first, the girls were a bit wary of the cam—hissing and stepping gingerly around it. Within 20 minutes, however, they felt comfortable going right up to the cam and even knocked it over! Adding a novel items to the lions' environment is part of the Zoo's enrichment program. Not only do they physically and mentally stimulate the Zoo's residents, but also encourage animals to use their natural abilities and behaviors in new and exciting ways. Enrichment is an integral part of daily care and helps keepers ensure the Zoo's animals have a high quality of life. You can help contribute to the Zoo's enrichment program by donating to our Giving Tree! http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Support/MakeDonation/GivingTree.cfm- published: 07 Mar 2014
