I was sitting in a room amongst a bunch of young, alternative type meditation enthusiasts when this really nice fella named Craig struck up a conversation with me. We quickly realized we shared similar interests in the underground/punk/hardcore music scene so we hit it off instantaneously. It's funny how something as simple as sharing a profound love for completely obscure bands can bond people so quickly... though shit, I guess the same can be said for fundamental religious zealots too. Soooo, I think I'll just go ahead and digress now before exploring that connection any further. After a few moments of nerding it out over the bands and albums we love, the conversation inevitably turned towards spirituality (I mean we were in a meditation/sangha setting so it was bound to happen I suppose). Realizing we both shared an eclectic interest in many of the great wisdom traditions, Craig asked me if I'd ever read any of Ken Wilber's work, which at that point in my life, I hadn't. Truth be told, I was still very young in my spiritual journey and found myself attracted predominately to writers with "strange names" such as Krishnamurti, Thich Nhat Hanh, Ram Dass, Ramana Maharshi and so forth, so I mean, what could somebody named Ken Wilber have to offer me? That said, I remember politely telling Craig something like, "Cool, I'll check his stuff out" but honestly, I had little intention of doing so. I mean, this brand new world of wacky spiritual teachings was flipping my entire world and reality upside down (in a good way) and I couldn't waste my time with such normal sounding people as Ken Wilber. *This is a good point to reiterate that: I was very young in my spiritual journey! A few weeks later I was in my local library checking out their audiobook section when lo and behold, I came across 10 Disc audio series called, Kosmic Konsciousness that immediately grabbed my attention. As for the author of said program... you guessed it, Ken Wilber. I saw that the series consisted of a Q&A; format between Ken and Tami Simon, creator of Sounds True media. I was familiar with Sounds True and liked most of the audiobooks I had checked out from them up to that point, so between that, and Craig's recommendation, I decided I'd check it out... and nothing's ever been the same in my life since. I'd be lying if I said I understood more than about 10% of what was discussed in that program, but that roughly 10% which I did grasp, grabbed a hold of me and hasn't let go since. Today—on a good day—my 10% understanding has turned into, oh, let's conjecture a 70% understanding (those mathematics may be a bit liberal, but I like to think it's in the 70% ballpark). Throughout the years after first embarking on the Kosmic Konsciousness program, I've worked my way through the majority of Ken's literary work, which consists of over two-dozen books—many which have received multiple readings (if you're familiar with Ken's work, you understand why). The following interview (in six parts with a complete run time of 2:42:35) is nowhere near the magnitude of what is offered in the Kosmic Konsciousness audio program. However, it's still my humble honor to share with you, a very condensed look and introduction into the life and work of Ken Wilber, in his own words. Topics include, but are not limited to; the current state, and future of, spirituality; absolute and relative truth/reality; how we ended up in this human experience in the first place; Ken's forthcoming book, The Fourth Turning; eclectic multimedia in relation to Ken's work; Ken's initial "waking up" experience in college; a glimpse at what else he's currently working on, and so much more. My sincerest thanks to Ken for granting me this interview, as he's an extremely busy man and rarely does interviews in general. And so it's with that said, that I hope the following words, spoken from one of the greatest minds of our time, is of innumerable benefit to all who hear them, and that this offering become even a sliver of contribution to humanities continued evolution and awakening.
