March 17, 2014 - Several rockets struck the predominantly Shiite town of Labweh in eastern Lebanon on Monday, causing some damage but no casualties. Angry Labweh residents said the rockets were fired from the Lebanese Sunni-dominated town of Arsal, which is surrounded by Shiite villages guarded by Hezbollah militants. Syrian rebels have been pouring across the border into Arsal after their stronghold of Yabroud fell to Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces on Sunday. The Lebanese army sent commandos to the tense border area with Syria on Monday, bracing for another spillover from the conflict. Lebanese troops and commandos patrolled the rugged, hilly border area on foot. On one patrol, near the northeastern village of Fakiha, they came across an abandoned vehicle, rigged with explosives and blew it up, leaving a four-meter (yard) crater on the ground. Syria's civil war has already ignited polarizing sectarian tensions between Lebanon's Sunnis and Shiites. With opposition fighters crossing into Lebanon, where Hezbollah is a major force, Syria's smaller neighbor is likely to be dragged even more into the conflict.

Three rockets fired by insurgents in Syria hit Lebanese cities

Several people have been wounded on Saturday after three rockets launched from Syrian territories hit the Bekaa towns of Labweh and Jabbureh in Lebanon. One of the rockets landed on an orchard in Labweh, while the second one fell on the outskirts of the town causing fire to erupt. The third rocket landed on a road in Zboud. Experts have inspected the scene, and point the finger at foreign-backed insurgents in Syria and their Lebanese supporters for the attacks. Hezbollah officials also visited the scene and they too blamed the insurgents for the acts. They also confirmed the peoples' commitment to the cause of resistance. Experts believe the attack is targeting the resistance to press Hezbollah to stop helping the Syrian army. Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, the Northern and Eastern Bekaa towns have been targeted by missiles and gunfire from insurgents in Syria. The attacks have wounded many and caused major material damage. This is the latest in a string of cross-border rocket attacks that these Eastern Lebanese towns have witnessed since the beginning of the Syrian crisis. Many say the rocket attacks are aimed at creating instability in Lebanon.

The Lebanese army has deployed in the town of Arsal, along the border with Syria as part of efforts to calm down tensions from the spillover of Syria's conflict there. The army has now reopened the main road out of the town after a night of tension. The road had been sealed off by residents from the neighboring town of Labweh, where one person was killed last week by a rocket fire. Locals blame Arsal for the rocket fire. Tensions between the two towns have increased since the purging of foreign-backed insurgents by the Syrian army in the border town of Yabrud on Sunday. Yabrud's recapture prompted the fleeing of militants, with many finding safe havens in or around Arsal.

Syrian army troops have regained control of the town of Sarkha in al-Qalamoun Mountain on the outskirts of Damascus. The army also says it's now in control of the ancient town of Ma'alula. The mainly-Christian town has changed hands between government troops and insurgents several times. The liberation of Sarkha and Ma'alula is the latest in a series of operations army forces have been conducting since mid-March. They began an operation to free the surrounding areas of the Ranqous plain in the strategic region yesterday, trying to drive out the foreign-backed insurgents from areas on the edge of Damascus. The Lebanese army has successfully dismantled a vehicle loaded with a major load of explosives in the Bekaa Valley, security sources said. Lebanon's security officials said the car, which was rigged with some 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of explosive materials, was found abandoned on the main road between the towns of Younin and Maqna in the Bekaa Valley at dawn on Friday. The Lebanese network al-Manar reported that two mortar shells and TNT fingers were also found in the explosive-laden Buick. According to reports, security forces cordoned off the area, while bomb experts defused the explosives, ahead of the celebrations to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Lebanon's independence from France's colonial rule. The Lebanese media also said the army soldiers had earlier spotted the suspect car and exchanged fire with its passenger while chasing it, but the car managed to get away. The incident took place three days after at least 23 people, including Iran's cultural attaché to Beirut Hojjatoleslam Ebrahim Ansari, were killed and more than 140 injured in two explosions that struck near the Iranian Embassy in the southern neighborhood of Janah in the Lebanese capital on November 19. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman Suleiman, for his part, condemned the terrorist attacks and said Beirut would make its utmost efforts to identify and bring to justice those behind the bombings.

And that's according to an annual report by American travel website known as TripAdvisor. Based on this ranking, tourists staying at four-star hotels in the Tunisian capital paid an average 18-point-41 dollars for a club sandwich, a bottle of water, peanuts, a can of cola, and laundry for one shirt. But the same items cost a whopping 98-point-48 dollars in the four-star hotels of Helsinki in Finland which takes the prize for the most expensive room service. That's almost six times more expensive than hotels in Tunis.
