The aerial robot equipped with high-resolution camera and simple GPS receiver is used for visual mapping and geo-referencing of the agricultural area. A ground robot uses the generated visual map to efficiently approach detected objects to perform arbitrary actions (e.g. application of pesticides/herbicides) at the object's locations. A quadrotor (QR) and a UGV collaborate autonomously to patrol an area looking for a target. First, the QR takes off from on top a UGV and patrols a given area searching for a target (a sign in this case). Once it is located, the QR sends its location to the rover and autonomously flies to another area, locates the landing mark and takes land. The UGV goes to the received location from the UGV avoiding obstacles. Once the robot gets to the given location, it looks for the target using its camera and reports it. CASY- Cooperative Autonomous SYstems - Researchers Night 2013
We perform research in the general area of planning and control for autonomous aerial vehicles, specifically missiles and aircraft. The motivation is to enable higher levels of autonomy and superior performance to such vehicles operating individually or as a team. Our research spans from the cooperative team mission planning problem (task assignment), to the motion planning problem (guidance) of optimizing trajectories for the dynamical systems, and then to trajectory following (flight control). Particular emphasis is given to problems involving uncertainties, for example regarding adversary\'s actions and self or team measurements (possibly requiring estimation). The spectrum of such problems is wide and multi-disciplinary and provides numerous theoretical and practical research challenges. To test our theoretical results for cooperative real-time high-level mission planning (task assignment) and lower-level control of a group of autonomous aerial vehicles, and to gain insight into the interactions and current limitations between the different levels of planning and control, we have founded in 2009 the Cooperative Autonomous SYstems (CASY) laboratory. The lab, which was established as part of the Technion Autonomous Systems Program (TASP), is an indoor test-bed emulating real-world complexities and constraints. It is composed of an indoor motion capture system (that includes 18 infra red cameras) providing in real-time six-degrees-of-freedom estimates for the tracked vehicles (micro coaxial helicopters and also ground vehicles emulating fixed winged aircraft having a minimal turning radius constraint). The closed loop guidance and autopilot of the vehicles is attained by employing these estimates, which are processed in a PC, as feedback. The computed control commands for all vehicles are synchronously transmitted through standard radio remote controller; This architecture allows adding new vehicles in a short time and with low cost since no embedded hardware is installed on the vehicles. This enables us to avoid being overly conservative during flight testing. CASY was built and is operated by undergraduate and graduate students.- published: 23 Sep 2013
