Snow angels celebrate record falls |PHOTOS

RECORD snowfalls at Falls Creek this week have more than made up for a slow start to June.

Snow enthusiasts were rejoicing yesterday as they woke up to 40 centimetres of fresh white powder.

That fall was complemented by another 20 centimetres during the day, blanketing the Alpine region and taking the week’s total to about 125 centimetres.

Falls Creek resident and photographer Chris Hocking was excited to see the season go from “very little going on to stellar conditions”.

“The resort has had over 125 centimetres of new snow this past week, making it the largest June snowfall since 1991,” he said.

“We have broken the one-metre mark on base.

“The resort is fully operational and it’s been the most amazing week of snow in a long time.”

Falls Creek Ski Lifts staff member Anthony O’Shea was equally excited.

“We are right in the middle of one of the best June snowstorms in years,” he said.

“And like everyone on the mountain, we were up all night just watching all this snow fall.

“The entire mountain is cloaked in white.”

Mount Hotham had similar falls, with 26 centimetres yesterday that took the week’s total to about one metre of snow.

Last night the snow was still falling over the alpine region with snow showers forecast today and clearing tomorrow.
