Melilla - Where Spain Meets Africa (Travel Guide). Discover this unique city enclave.
Occupying 12 square kilometres of the North African coast - 6 hours sailing time from mainland Europe - Melilla is without doubt Spain's most unique city. Sadly its only appearances in the news tend to portray a city on the front-line of migration from sub-Saharan Africa. Yet that is not an accurate picture of a proud community where the languages of Spain and North Africa mix peacefully in the cafes and bars.
The city boasts centuries of history as well as a concentration of Modernist architecture second only to Barcelona. This short guide will take you on a tour of Melilla La Vieja (the fortress where the city began), through the parks and elegant streets, and finally to the heavily fortified border.
The film features an incredible display of drumming from Batu Cañada.

I Went to Melilla - What Did I Find There?
I've known about Spain's territorial holdings in North Africa for decades and I've been interested to visit one or both of them for as long as I've known about them. So I was really excited to finally make it to Melilla. Actually the harder of the two to visit as the other enclave, Ceuta, is a relatively short ferry ride from Algeciras, which in turn is a relatively short trip from Gibraltar.
I'm not sure what I expected, but I found a fiercely Spanish community, surrounded by high fences and supported by a significant law enforcement community... It was a fascinating trip, and I'll show you what I found in this video!

African migrants storm border into Spain's Melilla
More than 200 African migrants have scaled the border fence into the Spanish enclave of Melilla.
It was the biggest assault on the border in more than eight years.
The migrants, many from Cameroon and Guinea, ran through the Melilla streets after making it onto European soil in the early hours of February 28.
They headed for the overcrowded migrant reception centre in celebratory mood.
The latest incursion at Melilla brings the number of migrants who have successfully scaled the fence to a...

The Cargo Women of Melilla
Embedded in the Moroccan coast, the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla represent Europe's southernmost border. There is no formal customs agreement between these two autonomous cities and Morocco, giving rise to a system where goods are smuggled across the border as personal luggage to avoid customs charges and taxes.
The burden of this work falls on the "cargo women", who carry huge bales of goods back and forth over the border. These women - without contracts, social security or healthcare - suffer abuse and harassment at the hands of the border police. The "cargo women" earn a pittance while the cities earn over €400 million in taxes from their labour. Borders open and close depending on the needs of capital.

The UK is facing an economic crisis, falling living standards, a climate crisis, the rise of the far-right. More than ever, we need a resilient Left. This means we need a strong Left media, capable of thinking honestly about the issues facing us, tackling these issues head-on, as well as reaching out to those who aren’t yet on side. Our wide range of output – from listicles to essays, from punchy videos to in-depth discussions – does exactly that.
But all this costs money: studio rent, equipment, contributor fees and digital infrastructure. We do a lot with a little, but we can’t do anything with nothing. We won’t charge for content or cash in on sponsorship deals with Pepsi. We don’t have private fortunes, or state backers, or big capital behind us – we just have you.
Not everyone can afford to give – but if you enjoy our work, and you believe in what we’re doing, maybe you could forego a couple of your preferred beverages this month and lend us a hand instead. In the longer term, growing our regular subscriber base will allow us to meet the future well-prepared – so if you can spare a few quid a month, why not sign up for a regular subscription?
We’ve achieved so much already – but the truth is, we’ve barely begun. Be a part of the change. Help us build a new media for a different politics.
