How Cotton is Made

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants of the genus Gossypium. The fiber is almost pure cellulose. Under natural condition, the cotton balls will tend to increase the dispersion of the seeds. The plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, Africa, and India. The greatest diversity of wild cotton species is found in Mexico, followed by Australia and Africa.[1] Cotton was independently domesticated in the Old and New Worlds. The English name derives from the Arabic (al) qutn قُطْن, which began to be used circa 1400 CE.[2] The Spanish word, "algodón", is likewise derived from the Arabic. The fiber is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile. The use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times; fragments of cotton fabric dated from 5000 BCE have been excavated in Mexico and the Indus Valley Civilization (modern day Pakistan). Although cultivated since antiquity, it was the invention of the cotton gin that so lowered the cost of production that led to its widespread use, and it is the most widely used natural fiber cloth in clothing today. Current estimates for world production are about 25 million tonnes annually, accounting for 2.5% of the world's arable land. China is the world's largest producer of cotton, but most of this is used domestically. The United States has been the largest exporter for many years.

Our How to Make Cotton Candy Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQPEyfWErm4 Cotton Candy Cupcakes: • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs • 1/2 cup milk • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon cotton candy flavoring • 1 cup cotton candy (do not pack) • Pink/blue/purple gel paste Cotton Candy Buttercream: • 1 cup butter • 2 cups icing sugar • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon cotton candy flavoring • 2 tablespoons milk • 1 cup cotton candy Procedure: Cupcakes Preheat oven to 350F. Line cupcake pan with liners. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside for later. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter, sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Add the cotton candy flavouring and mix it in. Alternating between additions of milk and the flour mixture, mix until the batter is smooth. Mix the cotton candy in last. Divide batter into three equal portions and colour one portion purple, one blue, and one pink. Place a tablespoon of each colour into the cupcake liners, or fill until the well is 3/4 full. Bake cupcakes for 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Buttercream Cream butter in bowl of stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Add icing sugar, milk and flavouring. Mix until smooth. Add cotton candy, and mix until the cotton candy is broken up into small pieces. Place into piping bag fitted with a large round open tip, such as Ateco 809. Pipe icing onto the top of the cupcakes and garnish with mini cotton candy cones if desired. Serve immediately, or store in a sealed container in the fridge for 2-3 days.
