Iran tested its most advanced missiles on Monday to cap two days of war games raising more international concern and stronger pressure to quickly come clean on the newly revealed nuclear site Tehran was secretly constructing. State television said the powerful Revolutionary Guard which controls Iran s missile programme successfully tested upgraded versions of the medium-range Shahab-3 and Sajjil missiles. Both can carry warheads and reach up to 1200 miles 2000 kilometres putting Israel US military bases in the Middle East and parts of Europe within striking distance. The missile tests were meant to flex Iran s military might and show readiness for any military threat. Asked what would happen if Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Monday that although he did not predict an attack the only result of it would be the acceleration of the final breaths of the Zionist regime and its transient life which is already numbered will come to an end very soon. The semi-official Fars news agency quoted Abdollah Araqi a top Revolutionary Guard commander as saying Iranian missiles were able to target any place that threatens Iran. Iran has now conducted three rounds of missile tests in drills that began on Sunday two days after the US and its allies disclosed the country had been secretly developing an underground uranium enrichment facility. The Western powers warned Iran it must open the site to international inspection or face harsher international sanctions. Iran s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi said the missile tests were part of long-planned military exercises. The newly revealed nuclear site has given greater urgency to a key meeting on Thursday in Geneva between Iran and six major powers trying to stop its suspected nuclear weapons programme. European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said the talks were now taking place in a new context. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she didn t believe Iran could convince the US and other world powers at the meeting that its nuclear programme was for peaceful purposes as Tehran has long claimed. The nuclear site is located in the arid mountains near the holy city of Qom and is believed to be inside a heavily guarded underground facility belonging to the Revolutionary Guard according to a document sent by President Barack Obama s administration to lawmakers. After strong condemnations from the US and its allies Iran said on Saturday it would allow United Nations nuclear inspectors to examine the site. Israel has trumpeted the latest discoveries as proof of its long-held assertion that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons. By US estimates Iran is one to five years away from having nuclear weapons capability although US intelligence also believes that Iranian leaders have not yet made the decision to build a weapon. Iran also is developing ballistic missiles that could carry a nuclear warhead but the US administration said last we- published: 04 Nov 2013

Iran tested its longest-range missiles on Monday capping two days of war games meant to show the country is ready for any military threat at a time when it is under intense international pressure to fully disclose its nuclear activities. State television said the powerful Revolutionary Guard which controls Iran s missile programme successfully tested upgraded versions of the medium-range Shahab-3 and Sajjil missiles. Iran s Arabic language Al-Alam state TV on Monday aired pictures of Revolutionary Guards third round of missile drills in which Sajjil missile was test-fired. Both Shahab-3 and Sajjil missiles carry warheads and reach up to 1200 miles 2000 kilometres putting Israel US military bases in the Middle East and parts of Europe within striking distance. On the other hand there has been much speculation Israel might launch a military strike against Iran s nuclear sites as it did against an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981. However Iran s Defence Minister General Ahmad Vahidi ruled out the possibility of an attack against Iran s nuclear facilities and said his country does not predict such a move. The only result of it would be the acceleration of the final breathes of the Zionist regime and its transient life which is already numbered will come to an end very soon Vahidi who is wanted over charges of involvement in the bombing of the Jewish centre in Buenos Aires that left 85 people dead told the media on Monday. The Sajjil-2 missile is Iran s most advanced two-stage surface-to-surface missile and is powered entirely by solid-fuel while the older Shahab-3 uses a combination of solid and liquid fuel in its most advanced form which is also known as the Qadr-F1. Solid fuel is seen as a technological breakthrough for any missile programme as solid fuel increases the accuracy of missiles in reaching targets. Earlier state media reported tests overnight of the Shahab-1 and Shahab-2 missiles with ranges of 185 miles 300 kilometres and 435 miles 700 kilometres respectively. That followed tests early Sunday of the short range Fateh Tondar and Zelzal missiles which have a range of 120 miles 193 kilometres 93 miles 150 kilometres and 130 miles 200 kilometres respectively. Iran s last known missile tests were in May when it fired its longest-range solid-fuel missile Sajjil-2. Tehran said the two-stage surface-to-surface missile has a range of about 1200 miles 1900 kilometres - capable of striking Israel US Mideast bases and southeastern Europe. The missile tests began on Sunday two days after the US and its allies disclosed that Iran had been secretly developing an underground uranium enrichment facility and warned the country it must open the site to international inspection or face harsher international sanctions. Earlier in the day Iran s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi said the missile tests had nothing to do with the tension over the site saying it was part of routine long-planned military exercises. Iran said it has successfully test-fired the longest-range missiles in its arsenal weapons capable of carrying a warhead and striking Israel US military bases in the Middle East and parts of Europe. English-language Press TV on Monday showed pictures of Shahab-3 missile being test-fired. Iran s state television said on Monday the Revolutionary Guard which controls Iran s missile programme successfully tested the medium-range Shahab-3 and Sajjil solid-fuel missiles with ranges up to about 1200 miles two-thousand kilometres . It was the third round of missile tests in two days of drills by the Guard. General Hossein Salami head of the Revolutionary Guard Air Force said on Sunday the drills were meant to show Tehran is prepared to crush any military threat from another country. The Shahab-1 and Shahab-2 have a range of about 185 miles 300 kilometres and 435 miles 700 kilometres respectively. Salami who claimed during the launch multiple-warheads were applied to the Iranian mid-range missiles for the first time during the testing described the manoeuvre as a night drill aimed at evaluation of capabilities of the air force and boosting the level of technical and tactical capabilities of this force for night launches. English-language Press TV reported that during the first stage of the launch on the first day the Fateh-110 short-range ground to ground missile Tondar-69 a naval missile and Zelzal were test-fired. Press TV said that all three missiles were working based on solid fuel and ranged between 100 to 400 kilometres. The test of the mid-range missiles was the second stage of the Great Prophet 4 military exercises that began on Sunday. The war games come at a time when Iran is under intense international pressure to fully disclose its nuclear activities.
