18+ Warning - Not for Shock - Contains Graphic Images - For Adults Only - The Shia fascist Iraq Army Massacres 52 Iranian Dissident Exiles in Cold Blood at Camp Ashraf 1-Sept-13 BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.N. team visited an Iranian dissident camp in Iraq on Monday following violence that killed dozens of people a day earlier in disputed circumstances. The bloodshed, condemned by the United Nations, Britain and the United States, took place hours after a mortar bomb attack on the camp which the dissident Mujahadin-e-Khalq (MEK) group blamed on the Iraqi army. An adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki dismissed the accusations as baseless. Two security sources said on Sunday that the army and special forces had opened fire on residents who stormed a post at the entrance to Camp Ashraf - a site that Iraq's government, which is close to Iranian authorities, wants closed down. The sources said at least 19 people were killed, 52 wounded and 38 arrested and that they believed residents were not armed. But a U.N. statement had a death toll figure of 47, while the MEK said 52 of its roughly 100 members at the camp were killed. U.N. spokeswoman Elaine Nabaa said on Monday the team from the organization's Iraq office had gone to the camp to assess the humanitarian situation, without giving further details. She said it was the Iraqi government's responsibility to investigate what had happened. British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said he was appalled by the violence. "We condemn this utterly," he said in a statement on Monday, urging the Iraqi government to protect the camp's remaining residents. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Sunday the United Nations "deplores the tragic events at Camp Ashraf" and called on Baghdad to investigate the incident. The U.S. embassy in Iraq condemned "the terrible events" at the camp. MEK, which the U.S. State Department removed from its list of terrorist organizations last year, wants Iran's clerical leaders overthrown and fought on former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's side during the Iran-Iraq war in 1980s. The group, also known as the People's Mujahideen Organisation of Iran, is no longer welcome in Iraq under the Shi'ite Muslim-dominated government that came to power after U.S.-led forces toppled Sunni leader Saddam in 2003. Most of the group was relocated last year to a former U.S. military compound in western Baghdad. Mortar attacks on the facility took place in February and June and, at the time, MEK blamed Iran's Quds force - an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guards with a special focus on foreign operations.- published: 04 Sep 2013

SoundWorks Collection: The Sound of ARGO
The SoundWorks Collection talks with Sound Supervisor and Sound Designer Erik Aadahl to discuss the sound of Director Ben Affleck's Argo.
In 1979, during the Iranian Revolution, Islamic militants take over the U.S. embassy in Tehran and hold 52 Americans hostage. Six other Americans escape and hide in the Canadian ambassador's home. The Central Intelligence Agency and its specialist Tony Mendez (Affleck) put together a plan to help the six Americans escape Iran. With the cover of the 6 Americans being location finders for a movie called Argo, Tony must get the hostages to play the part of the Canadian movie makers, so they can escape Teheran.

Interview with Mahmoud Dowlatabadi - محمود دولت آبادى
Interview with Mahmoud Dowlatabadi carried out by Kamran Rastegar, Tehran 2006.
Mahmoud Dowlatabadi, by many estimates, is Iran’s preeminent living writer. Born to a family of modest means in a small village in Northeastern Iran in 1940, Dowlatabadi came of age in a time when Iran’s rural population was emigrating to the cities, looking for new lives and new ways of living. In this sense, he is one of a generation of new voices to seek their place within the field of modern Iranian literature, those not from the urban middle or upper classes. His work to date encompasses over ten novels, as well as many novellas and short stories. Any list of his major works would have to begin with his massive 5-volume novel Kelidar, and also include the novels Missing Soluch (English translation by Kamran Rastegar, published by Melville House Publishing, in the US in 2007) and The Legend of Baba Sobhan. Part of Dowlatabadi’s remarkable achievement has been the raw force of his literary style, and the subtlety of his prose – in particular in treating issues of poverty and marginalization. Where previous Iranian authors tended to represent poverty as either grotesque or heroic (or, in some cases, as both), Dowlatabadi is perhaps the first to attempt to represent the complex ethics of poverty that result in horizontal violence between similarly dispossessed groups, and the ways in which poverty instills violence and repression even into the intimate spaces of the family. In addition, Kelidar and Missing Soluch both present complex female characters as major voices within their narratives. Despite facing obstacles, Dowlatabadi has remained a prominent voice for freedom of thought and creativity in Iran, and has continued to be productive in writing as well as criticism.

Black Diamond Bay are a Leeds based 7 piece playing what has been described as a seething, strutting motorik funk charge by one eloquent journalist. Allying the drums and synths of electro with punishing bass and guitar riffs to compliment classical violins and sweet female harmonies, their music crosses many genres and yet despite defying easy definition, remains coherent, bold and accessible. Black Diamond Bay were born when attic based production duo Tarentum (Tom Sidebottom/Jesse OMahoney) hand picked musicians from Leeds College of Music to form a band to play their songs live. Lithuanian ingénue Agne Motieciute was the first to join, her beautiful voice and subtly threatening early Bardot persona making the decision easy. Then followed the blissful harmonies of Holly Thomas. The line up expanded further to include Colin Sutton, the fastest bass player in Yorkshire and Ben Ziapour, the heaviest Anglo-Iranian guitarist of all time. Their dance moves and capacity for abstract thought also helped to ease them through the selection process. Ben Wilson a protégé of Colins, became the drummer, not only for his unerring ability to keep time under pressure but also due to his status as resident dark horse. His musical genius spans several genres and a multitude of instruments too numerous for inclusion in this dispatch (a list will be provided on request).
The debut release Worship The Sun is a call to arms to wrest spirituality from the clutches of religion - a fitting statement for a band who take their name from Bob Dylans eponymous song about empathy. Lyrically they consider the relationship between science and religion, and how different things might have been had we discovered photosynthesis whilst still praying to the mighty orb in the sky. Musically they echo this ethos, combining the organic with the artificial. Worship the Sun skews an electro beat to a Bluegrass rhythm, eschewing the drum and bass feel more commonly used on fast electronica. Ben and Colin provide gritty guitar and bass riffs and with the girls harmonies floating over the seething fusion this track captures the essence of the band.
Cold came about when Tom, struggling with an archaic music programme which had no bars and beats to aid production, jammed with housemate Rob McVey using Spanish guitars and violins. When Jesse first heard the beautifully melancholy track the lyrics and melody quickly fell into place for a classic macabre end of relationship as death song. Black Diamond Bay have a colourful history that includes a childhood Eurovision experience, broadcast script writing, being the number one act on a popular Lithuanian website for 2009 and playing the main stage to great acclaim at Kendal Calling. They enjoyed further support from BBC Radio Leeds, Kiss, 6 Music and XFM prior to formally releasing any music. However beyond what might seem immediately obvious about the band there is that other intangible element that all great bands have in common, a sense of poetry and mystery. Black Diamond Bay are there to unfold, it begins with Worship The Sun and the debut album I dreamt we were bank robbers that follows later in 2010.

Iranians honor martyrs of revolution
Iranians honor martyrs of revolution
The victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979 was achieved with a high price, with many lost lives before and after the revolution. In the lead up to the revolution from 1963 to 1979 over 3,000 thousand lives were lost. Iranians call these people Martyrs of the revolution. In June of 1963, seen as a starting point of the revolution protests erupted following the arrest of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the man that 15 years later overthrew the US-Supported regime of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and established the Islamic Republic of Iran. The victory in 1979 happened in the ten-day dawn period, which is ten days since Ayatollah Khomeini set foot in Iran back from years of exile. Now as Iran celebrates these ten days many Iranians visit these martyrs all over the country. In Tehran's Behesht Zahra Cemetery most of the people that fought for the revolution are laid to rest next to the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini. On Thursdays and Fridays Iranians come and pay respect to those that have passed away, amongst the traditions are cleaning the tombs with rosewater, laying flowers on it and passing out sweats and food to those that pass by. While these days are important in Iran's Calendar and more people come to pay their respects many of the people we talked to were regulars here. A lady pouring rosewater on the grave of his son said, "It's more than 30 years that I come here on Thursdays to the tomb of my son who became a martyr." The list of those that gave their lives continued in the years following the revolution. The newly formed government faced protests and terror attacks that left 17,000 dead including a President and Prime Minister. The terror attacks were mostly by the Mujahedeen Khalgh Organization, MKO. Many believe these lost lives fortified the revolution. "We owe the revolution and the Islamic Republic to these martyrs and we should not take the blood of the martyrs fore-granted. We should show up in great numbers in the march on the 22nd of Bahman to continue their route." Many events are held in this ten day period in Iran that comes to an end on the 11th of February this year with a nationwide march in support of the Islamic Revolution.- published: 08 Feb 2014
