This instrument is played in eastern Azerbaijan in Iran and in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Balaban can be made of mulberry or other harder woods, such as walnut. The bore through the instrument is about 1.5 centimetres (0.59 in) in diameter. The double reed is made out of a single tube of cane about six cm long and pressed flat at one end. The performer uses air stored in his cheeks to keep playing the balaban while he inhales air into his lungs. The Music of Azerbaijan builds on folk traditions that reach back nearly 1,000 years. For centuries Azerbaijani music (Azeri Music) has evolved under the badge of monody, producing rhythmically diverse melodies. Azerbaijani music (Azeri Music) has a branchy mode system, where chromatisation of major and minor scales is of great importance. Instruments used in traditional Azeri music (Azerbaijani Music) include the stringed instruments tar (skin faced lute), the kamancheh (skin faced spike fiddle), the oud, originally barbat, and the saz (long necked lute); the double-reed wind instrument balaban, the frame drum ghaval, the cylindrical double faced drum nagara (davul), and the goshe nagara (naqareh) (pair of small kettle drums).
