Why the Sochi Olympics are the Most Expensive in History
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The Olympics are as much about money as they are about sports. Between broadcasting rights, merchandising, sponsorships and construction of the Olympic venues themselves, there's a lot of money to be made. In the case of Russia's Winter Olympics in Sochi, there's more money to be made than ever before, especially if you're a friend of President Putin. The 2014 Winter Games have cost Russia about $50 billion, making them the most expensive in history. Corruption watchdogs say it's ordinary Russians who will end up footing the bill for this excess, not private investors as Putin has suggested. We went to Sochi to investigate the claims of corruption and kickbacks, tour some of the most expensive Olympic venues ever built, and talk to Sochi residents who have been pushed aside to make room for Putin's man-made mountains of money. Pussy Riot Gets Whipped in Sochi
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In Sochi, a group of uniformed Cossacks attacked members of the protest group Pussy Riot with pepper spray and horse whips. Just moments earlier, Nadya Tolokonnikova, Masha Alyokhina, and a handful of other members headed out of a cafe toward the Sochi seaport, where they prepared to perform. As they were putting on their neon ski masks, about a dozen Cossacks descended on the group, thrashing them with whips, throwing them to the ground, and kicking them as police officers stood by. The police allowed the mini-pogrom to continue for about ten minutes. Russia has fielded hundreds of Cossacks in Sochi for the Olympics to help the police maintain public order. This state-supported militia force, with its signature fur hats and riding boots, can be seen all throughout the Olympic host city during the Winter Games. The incident took place against a backdrop of arrests and detentions of opponents of the Russian authorities and the Olympics. These critics have alleged that massive corruption and environmental damage took place during preparations for Sochi 2014. Pussy Riot said that they came to the city to record a protest song to draw attention to the detention of Yevgeny Vitishko, an environmentalist. Vitishko was recently sentenced to three years in prison for violating the terms of a suspended sentence he received for painting graffiti on the fence of the local governor's residence, which was built in a national forest. Amnesty International maintains that Vitishko's conviction was politically motivated, and considers him a prisoner of conscience. Pussy Riot finally accomplished what the group had come to Sochi to do, recording their first protest song since being released from prison: "Putin Will Teach You to Love the Motherland." In an interview with Vice News reporter Simon Ostrovsky, Tolokonnikova responded to detractors who claim that she and Alyokhina are no longer true members of the protest group by saying, "Anyone can become a member of Pussy Riot, including any one of you. The only thing you have to do is be passionate about politics, make up a song, record that song, find a place, put on a mask and perform." Pussy Riot attacked with whips by police at Sochi
Russian punk group Pussy Riot is attacked by Cossack militia as they try to perform under a sign for the Sochi Olympics. Cossack militia attacked the Pussy Riot punk group with horsewhips on Wednesday as the group staged an impromptu performance under a sign advertising the Sochi Olympics. Six group members — five women and one man — donned their signature ski masks and were pulling out a guitar and microphone when at least 10 Cossacks and other security officials moved in. One guard appeared to use pepper spray, another whipped several group members while others ripped off their masks and threw the guitar in a rubbish bin. Police arrived and questioned witnesses, but no one was arrested. The Cossacks violently pulled masks from women's heads, beating group member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova with a whip as she lay on the ground. The incident lasted less than three minutes and one Pussy Riot member, a man wearing a bright yellow tank top, was left with blood on his face, saying he had been pushed to the ground. Pussy Riot, a performance-art collective involving a loose membership of feminists who edit their actions into music videos, has become an international flashpoint for those who contend Putin's government has exceeded its authority, particularly restricting human and gay rights. The group gained international attention in 2012 after barging into Moscow's main cathedral and performing a "punk prayer" in which they entreated the Virgin Mary to save Russia from Putin, who was on the verge of returning to the Russian presidency for a third term. Two members of the group, Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, were sentenced to two years in prison, but were released in December under an amnesty bill seen as a Kremlin effort to assuage critics before the Olympics. Closing Ceremony | Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games
The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games -- which were record-breaking in terms of athletic performances, ticket sales and media coverage -- came to an end on Sunday evening (16 March) at Fisht Stadium with a spectacular Closing Ceremony. Through the theme of "Reaching the Impossible," the Closing Ceremony illuminated how dreams can be achieved through strength and passion to change the perception of "impossible" to "I'm possible." IPC President Sir Philip Craven addressed the stadium during the Closing Ceremony, saying: "The Paralympic Spirit has united and infected us all. Proud Paralympians -- your inspirational athletic performances have redefined the boundaries of possibility. "You have shown the world that absolutely anything is possible and that life is about amazing capabilities and not perceived deficiencies. "With record numbers of highly enthusiastic spectators supporting you all, you have shown what real grit and determination looks like. Through record TV audiences and media coverage, you have opened up the eyes of the world to what the human spirit can achieve." The Closing Ceremony started with a group of wheelchair dancers moving gracefully across the field of play, joined by luminous aerialists overhead. All 30 Sochi 2014 gold medallists from the host nation carried the Russian flag into the stadium as the Russian State Children's Chorus Assembly sang an a capella version of the national anthem. Abstract artwork was brought to life by a centre stage cast of 462 performers dressed in bright colours who formed geometric shapes to display different images, including illustrations of various winter sports. A man in a wheelchair then appeared on the scene, faced with the challenge of climbing a 15-metre rope. When he accepted the challenge and reached the top of the rope, he became a flying apostrophe between the letters 'I' and 'M' in 'IMPOSSIBLE' to create 'I'M POSSIBLE,' with a spectacular fireworks display celebration the transformation. The Sochi 2014 Paralympics certainly showcased that motto, as Russia topped the standings with 30 golds and 80 total medals at the Games. Russia's Deputy Prime Minster Dmitry Kozak spoke, saying: "These Games have gone far beyond sports competitions. They showed what people from different countries and nationalities different cultures and traditions are capable of when they are united by a single goal and an inspired dream. "Attitudes toward people with an impairment have changed among Russian society. The Paralympic Winter Games have become a catalyst for our efforts to create a barrier-free environment in Russia. The Games are over, but we promise that this important work will continue throughout our vast country." Also in the Ceremony, the Whang Young Dai Award was presented to Australian alpine skier Toby Kane and Dutch snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee for not only achieving sporting excellence, but also for exemplifying the spirit of the Games by inspiring and exciting the world. Norway's Eskil Hagen, Finland's Katja Saarinen and Russia's Mikhail Terentiev were introduced as the new members of the IPC Athletes' Council before the 8,000 Sochi 2014 Paralympic volunteers were recognised as heros of the Games. Soon after, a cast of performers in red, blue and green transformed the Paralympic Agitos into a giant heart, embracing 51 volunteers at its centre. Visually impaired pianist Oleg Akkuratov played the Paralympic Anthem as the Paralympic Flag was lowered and passed on to the Mayor of PyeongChang before the South Korean flag was raised and the PyeongChang 2018 Games performers gave a magical performance. An enchanting cast filled the stage for the Closing Ceremony finale, putting on a huge dance sequence that included four international voices -- Jose Carreras --Nafset Chenib, Diana Gurtskaya and Valeriy Kozlovsky -- and ended with a large fireworks display across the entire Olympic Park.- published: 16 Mar 2014

And host nation Russia, who also won team gold earlier this week, secured a one-two finish as Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov took silver in Sochi. China's Pang Qing and Tong Jian, silver medallists in Vancouver four years ago, came fourth. Volosozhar, 27, and 30-year-old Trankov had been expected to win the gold medal after claiming the 2013 World Championships title They led in Sochi after scoring 84.17 in the short program, which they followed with 152.69 in the free program for a total of 236.86. Jihad Olympics: Sochi's Terror Problem
Jihad Olympics: Sochi's Terror Problem
Islamic extremists in Russia want to blow up the Sochi Winter Olympics. They've already succeeded in terrorizing a city 600 miles away with three separate suicide attacks in which more than 40 people have died since the end of October. Russia's Jihadists come from loosely affiliated cells modeled on Al Qaeda whose goal is the creation of an Islamic Emirate in the southern part of the country. Their dream state would also include Sochi itself. But Russia has won high marks for making the security at the games unobtrusive and so far, effective. So security experts are warning that the Islamists could recalculate and target easier-to-hit cities around the country during the 2014 Winter Games. VICE News sent Simon Ostrovsky to the most dangerous region in Europe to find out how serious the threat to the Olympics and Russia actually is.
