Aung San Suu Kyi attends BURMA's Armed Forces Day parade
Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has attended the country's Armed Forces Day ceremony and parade for the first time. Her presence at Wednesday's celebration in Naypyitaw is seen as a sign of her shift to pragmatism. Aung San Suu Kyi recently made remarks in favor of cooperation with the army and ruling party with an eye to revising the country's constitution, which stipulates the military's predominance. At the ceremony, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stressed that the military fully backs democratization and economic reform programs championed by President Thein Sein. He pledged the army's efforts toward national peace and development under the current government. The parade featured missiles and armored vehicles for the first time, in an apparent attempt by Myanmar to clear such equipment of rumored links to China and North Korea.- published: 27 Jun 2014

Aung San Suu Kyi Speaks with US students
On Dec 10, 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi spoke with a group of high school students at Vashon Island High School in WA State via cell phone. She answered questions from the students during the 20 minute session that occurred before school started for the day.
The event, perhaps the first of its kind, was recorded in its entirety with a handheld "Flip" video camera. The first part of the video is background and reaction from two student leaders of the school's Amnesty Club, the host of the event. The next scene is the question and answer session with Daw Suu lasting almost 20 minutes. This is followed by reaction and commentary from a Burmese woman active in the refugee community. The final minute captures the teacher-adviser's thoughts about what had just happened. To put it mildly everyone was thrilled by the experience and it clearly shows. I was present to provide technical support (not knowing anything about this issue) but ended up getting thoroughly drawn into the experience, thankfully I kept the camera rolling. I encourage the viewer to watch the entire video, not only to hear Daw Suu but to see the impact the event had on the students.. priceless...truly heartening.
Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest Nov 13, 2010 after more than 15 years of confinement. Now free, she continues her crusade for non-violent political change in Burma by reaching out to students in the United States.
