NASA | Arctic Melt Season Lengthening, Ocean Rapidly Warming
The length of the melt season for Arctic sea ice is growing by several days each decade, and an earlier start to the melt season is allowing the Arctic Ocean to absorb enough additional solar radiation in some places to melt as much as four feet of the Arctic ice cap's thickness, according to a new study by National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and NASA researchers. 2/25/2014 Astrobiologist Richard Hoover spent more than forty six years working at NASA. In that time, he established the Astrobiology Research Group at the NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center, and became internationally known for his research on microfossils in meteorites. Hoover has published many papers in which he asserts the discovery of extraterrestrial life in meteorites. Hoover no longer works for NASA, but he continues his controversial research and is currently an astrobiologist at Athens State University and a visiting research professor with the Centre for Astrobiology at the University of Buckingham. Hoover discussed his research in a lecture at the 2014 International UFO Congress. At the event, Hoover sat down with journalist Lee Speigel of the Huffington Post. Speigel asked Hoover to explain what it is that convinces him that life is not restricted to Earth. Hoover responded, "I am absolutely convinced that life is not restricted to the planet Earth because I have found the remains of lifeforms that are absolutely, conclusively extraterrestrial." Speigel pointed out that Hoover's findings have met with harsh skepticism by critics. But Hoover stands behind his research. He replied, "These critics will not debate me in an open scientific forum. The topic of climate change inspires a lot of debate. At NASA, it has also inspired a lot of science. NASA scientists examine the Earth's climate and how it is changing -- gaining knowledge through decades of satellite observations, powerful computer models and expert scientific analysis. This NASA Google+ Hangout on Mon., Sept. 30, at 12 p.m. EDT, caps a month-long campaign called Ask A Climate Scientist, #askclimate, designed to connect NASA climate scientists with the public to answer pressing questions about climate change. The Hangout takes place after the Sept. 27 release of the Summary for Policymakers report by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, #IPCC, a summary of the international science community's consensus view of climate change science. 7 Days of Earthquakes
Made with a Barbarian Group C++ framework. No audio.
Slowly making the transition over to C++ thanks to an internal framework being developed by a team at the Barbarian Group led by Andrew Bell (http://www.drawnline.net).
This video shows seven days worth of earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher. Mostly, its just a test to learn the intricacies of coding in C++. The ultimate goal is to fully switch over to C++ from Java, but baby steps for now.
The Earth is composed of an amalgam of textures from a couple different sources. The diffuse map, elevation map, and normal maps were primarily culled from NASA's Blue Marble project (http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_set.php?categoryId=2363&p;=1). Sadly, the topography and bathymetry maps do not feature prominent river formations so I had to add them separately from this source (http://naturalearth.springercarto.com/ne3_data/8192/textures/2_no_clouds_8k.jpg).

When a journey to another planet goes horribly wrong mid-flight, the few remaining survivors scramble to secure the cryogenic pods during a catastrophic system failure, and an ordinary female Engineer finds herself fighting to ensure the future of mankind.
Cryo opens in triage, and the opening title cards were designed to reflect this by visually representing system malfunctions. The glitch-ridden, sci-fi style is carried through to video diary expositions (which feature as part of the titles, introductory sequence, and epilogue), as well as the end cards and entire animated end roller.
In visually representing this systematic degradation, the titles not only reflect the damage sustained by the ship and equipment, but illustrate the fractured relationships of the crew - twisted, buckled and malfunctioning under extreme and sustained pressure. Noise, interference, and computer glitch effects were art directed and timed to create a sense of unease in the audience, leading up to the disclosure of the ship's dire situation - with the majority of glitch effects created manually, or, when plugins were used, keyframed heavily to achieve the desired result.
Interspersed throughout the titles, the video diary sequences emphasise and graphically echo the mental state of the film's heroine. These sequences, including titles and roller, are intercut with actual NASA imagery: disturbing flashes of meteors, strange moons, and the unfamiliar silhouettes of forbidding planets, which serve to underscore the idea that we are in an unfamiliar and hostile space.
The end credits continue the theme of fracture, with data readouts in the roller rewriting themselves to spell out credit categories. By fully animating the end roller, the audience is kept within the world of the film until the very last moment.

NASA experts claim to have intercepted an intergalactic distress call from an alien civilization that had already peaked and was actually dying when saber-tooth tigers still roamed the earth. The 80,000-year-old SOS was received and digitally recorded in late January 1998.
