Eurogroup Finance Ministers Discuss EU's Economic Forecast Updates For Euro Zone
Euro zone finance ministers discuss EU's updated economic forecasts for the 28 countries. Full Story: Euro zone finance ministers on Monday (May 5) discussed the European Union's updated economic forecasts for the 28 countries as well as the effect of the strong euro on the ongoing economic recovery. The risk of deflation in the euro zone is very low, the European Commission report stated, but price growth will pick up more slowly than expected this year and next, partly because of a stronger euro and a weak recovery. The euro zone economic recovery, strongly export-driven with gradually firming domestic demand, should produce 1.2 percent growth this year after a 0.4 percent fall in 2013, the Commission said. Growth is to accelerate to 1.7 percent next year as domestic demand picks up, marginally slower than the 1.8 percent the Commission forecast for 2015 in February. The European Commission also warned France would miss its 2015 budget deficit target unless it makes rapid policy adjustments. France was meant to have cut its deficit to 3.0 percent of gross domestic product by 2013, but the EU extended the deadline by two years due to extremely weak growth in the euro zone's second largest economy. Another country that must do more to tackle its budget gap is Spain, the Commission said, projecting that unless Madrid changes policy, the deficit will grow to 6.1 percent in 2015, from 5.6 percent expected this year. Third bailout for Greece 'realistic', says Eurogroup's chief
Greece might need additional financial support from the eurozone beyond 2014, when the current rescue loan programmes end. Speaking at the European Parliament on Thursday, Eurogroup's president Jeroen Dijsselbloem said it was 'realistic' to expect a third bailout for Athens before it can regain market access. "It is clear that despite recent progress Greece's troubles will not and I will repeat will not have been completely resolved by 2014. It is realistic to assume that additional support will be needed beyond the programme. In this context the Eurogroup has indicated clearly that it is committed to providing adequate support to Greece during the current programme and beyond until it has regained market access. Providing that Greece fully complies with condition of the programme, we will only be in a position to evaluate this over the course of 2014", said Eurogroup's president Jeroen Dijsselbloem. International lenders estimate that Greece will need around 10 billion euros more from the second half of 2014. But when asked by MEPs when the next bailout could be decided and what extra conditions would be attached to it, Dijsselbloem said no decision will be taken before April of next year. "We will be not be in any position to asses if the condition have been fully met until April next year. This timeline was also agreed last December. In April at the earliest we assess the progress in the programme as well as the development of the debt sustainability. The speculation at this stage is in my mind not helpful.", said Eurogroup's president Jeroen Dijsselbloem. Greece has so far received two bailouts worth about 240 billion euros.- published: 05 Sep 2013

The moves come as EU leaders have started to strike a cautiously more optimistic tone on the single currency zone's economic health. "A gradual economic recovery is tacking root in europe which we expect to grow firmer in the coming months and stand on a more solid footing and pick up speed in the course of next year, 2014", EU Economic Affairs Commissioner, Olli Rehn, said. Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem is the head of the Eurogroup, the informal body that shapes policy amongst the 17 euro members. He said: "After having climbed in the last two years, the unemployment rate in the euro-area is now stabelized since march at around 12%, which is of course far still too high. It's too early therefore to be complacent, we need to carry on with all our policies with resolve - and that's what we're going to do!"
