A costume designer or costume mistress/master is a person whose responsibility is to design costumes for a film or stage production. He or she is considered an important part of the "production team", working alongside the director, scenic and lighting designers as well as the sound designer. The costume designer might also collaborate with a hair/wig master or a makeup designer. In European theatre the role is somewhat different as the theatre designer will design both costume and scenic elements.

Costume designers will typically seek to enhance a character's personality, and/or to create an evolving plot of colour, changing social status or period through the visual design of garments and other means of dressing, distorting and enhancing the body - within the framework of the director's vision. At the same time, the designer must ensure that the designs allow the actor to move in a manner consistent with the historical period and enables the actor to execute the director's blocking of the production without damage to the garments. Additional considerations include the durability and washability of garments, particularly in extended runs. The designer must work in consultation with not only the director, but the set and lighting designers to ensure that the overall design of the production works together. The designer needs to possess strong artistic capabilities as well as a thorough knowledge of pattern development, draping, drafting, textiles and costume/fashion history as well as awareness of poise when in period dress, and be sensitive to the creative direction that the performer wants to take his/her character.

Susan Hilferty is an American costume designer for theatre, opera, and film. She received the 2001 Obie Award for Sustained Excellence in Costume Design.

Hilferty's Broadway credits include the costumes for Wicked (Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards), Lestat (Tony nomination), Spring Awakening (Tony nomination), Radio Golf, Assassins, the revival of Into the Woods (Tony nomination, Hewes Award), Jitney, Dirty Blonde, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

Hilferty has collaborated often with playwright Athol Fugard and has designed for the New York Shakespeare Festival, Manhattan Theatre Club, Second Stage, New York Theatre Workshop, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lincoln Center Theater, Playwrights Horizons, Classic Stage Company, and the Roundabout. Regional theaters employing Hilferty's costumes have included the Guthrie Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, Berkeley Rep, Yale Rep, McCarter Theatre, Alliance Theatre, Indiana Rep, Kennedy Center, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and American Conservatory Theater.

Paloma Young (born 1979) is an American costume designer.

A native of California, Young received a bachelor's degree in social history from University of California, Berkeley in 2000, and continued her education with an M.F.A. in costume design from the graduate theatre program at University of California, San Diego. She has design credits for shows at the La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe, South Coast Repertory, New York Theatre Workshop, Second Stage Theatre, and Berkeley Repertory Theater amongst others.

At the 66th Tony Awards, she won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for her work on Peter and the Starcatcher.

Katniss Everdeen is a fictional character and the protagonist of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy. Her name comes from an edible plant called katniss. Jennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss in the movie The Hunger Games, directed by Gary Ross.

Katniss and her family come from District 12, a coal-mining district that is the poorest and least populated district in the dystopian fictional autocratic nation of Panem. In the course of the first book, The Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to replace her sister, Primrose "Prim" Everdeen, after she is called forth during Reaping Day, a day in which, annually, one male and one female tribute in the age bracket of 12 to 18 are called forth from each district to fight to the death in an arena in what are known as the Hunger Games. Katniss, after an alliance with Rue from District 11 (who reminded Katniss of her own sister), a 12 year old who had a very touching death, she joins up with fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark, compete in the Games together. She uses her knowledge of hunting and archery to survive, and the two become the victors after defying the Capitol's attempt to force one to kill the other. Throughout the next two novels, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, Katniss becomes the symbol of a rebellion for the twelve districts against the Capitol's oppression, and ultimately decides the final balance of power in Panem by killing the aspiring president of District 13, the vanguard of the rebellion, for attempting to oppress the defeated Capitol itself and presumably ordering the final bombings that resulted in Prim's death.

Colleen Atwood (born September 25, 1948) is an American costume designer.

Atwood has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design nine times and won Academy Awards for the movies Chicago in 2002, Memoirs of a Geisha in 2006, and Alice in Wonderland in 2011. Atwood has collaborated several times with directors Tim Burton, Rob Marshall and Jonathan Demme.

Born in Yakima, Washington, she studied painting at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington in the early 1970s, and later worked in retail at various places, including the Yves St. Laurent boutique at Frederick & Nelson department store in the city.

Atwood began her career as a fashion advisor in Washington State in the early 1970s. She moved to New York in 1980, where she studied art at New York University. Her movie career started after a chance encounter with someone whose mother was designing the sets for the film Ragtime, and she got the job of a PA (production assistant) in the film. She worked as an assistant to a costume designer and eventually earned her first film credit for A Little Sex, directed by Bruce Paltrow.
