Yakutat Bay 9 - Building the city of Kings Cross from scratch (Part 1 of 3)
Hi there! I'm excited to bring today's Yakutat Bay episode to you, the first numbered episode in a while, and a veritable miniseries at that. I've been planning the city of Kings Cross in the southeasternmost corner of Yakutat Bay for a while. My intention is to build an attractive gateway city about the same size as Joinville at what will one day become the main route into the region toward its major cities from the exterior. Unlike the heavy industry focused city of Joinville, the goal for Kings Cross is to create a multifaceted economy based on a mix of roadside services, logistics, and shore tourism with plenty of rental homes in picturesque settings by the beach, in addition to the regional economic mainstays like intensive agriculture, retail and light industry. The city will be divided into three distinctive neighborhoods: A core with the bulk of the shopping, parks and historic character, a mid-century style suburban residential district across the highway, and sprawling bucolic exurbs in dense forest. By the end of these three videos I have the bulk of the city of Kings Cross developed and bustling, but I also left plenty of space to build two new residential or industrial areas in the future as well as for eventual upgrades to the coastal highway. I think this is the first time I've more or less built out a full large city tile on camera, and all in the space of one episode at that, albeit a long multi-part one. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did putting the videos together!- published: 26 May 2014

Yakutat Bay 5 - Widening the highway through Jamaica
Yakutat Bay 5 - Widening the highway through Jamaica
I've finally got another video to share, maybe one of the best yet. Today it's back to Yakutat Bay where major new developments have taken place, including the first settlements in the region's second-largest flat area after the coastal plain, a wide glacial valley just north of Lake Harlequin. The lake's southern shores are the site of Lakewood, and the areas around the lake near the major through highway routes that circle it are rapidly emerging as the region's largest metropolitan area. The area of focus today is at the junction of two of the highways that arc around the lake by the steep mouth of the glacial valley, a large new city developed off-camera named Jamaica after the famous neighborhood in Queens. Particularly the focus is on the east-west highway running along the main axis of the city. Constructed as a narrow tree-lined boulevard with frequent intersections and a distinct lack of traffic signals or turning lanes, its capacity has been completely overwhelmed by the rapid urban transformation of the area. The goal today is to widen the highway while destroying as few buildings as possible, rebuilding it as a divided highway with four through lanes throughout the urbanized area and with as many as seven lanes in the central business district. As usual with my recent videos I decided not to include music, so that you can select your own. Also, if you get bored or don't have time to watch the whole video, skip to the last 5 minutes for some cool overviews of the city and of traffic using the upgraded highway. --- Here are some mosaics from around Yakutat Bay that I've made since the last video came out. Definitely check these out if you haven't seen them already on Reddit, SC4Devotion, or Simtropolis: Lakewood: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7425/11678571073_cc04b302e7_o.png Emonds Field: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3738/11956958875_8334c117d9_o.png Annapolis: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3731/12097167085_63f9df6400_o.png And, as an added bonus, a single shot of Jamaica: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5532/12214713114_da94cedbe6_o.png- published: 30 Jan 2014

Yakutat Bay 7 - Wrapping up in Jamaica and finding Prop Pox
Today's video should be an enjoyable one. Since the last one I put out, I've switched to a new tree controller and terrain mod and just about built out all I intended to do in Jamaica. I start the video out by going around the city and showing off some of the new neighborhoods and other changes. Then, on discovering missing props for the second time in the tile, I slowly start to internalize the fact that it must be infected with the dreaded Prop Pox. Awfully convenient that that happened just as the city was nearly complete. In the second part of the video, I work on widening the highway concurrency to the south of town, a project that in addition to a new roadway requires several realignments, building a partial interchange, and building better signage for a couple miles south.- published: 21 Feb 2014

Yakutat Bay 4 - The cliffs by the edge of the lake
This is something of a two part video. The first part continues along the vein of the last video as I work on a highway roughly parallel to the one I was building last time over difficult terrain on the steep banks of one of the region's largest lakes. The second and larger part of the video takes place very close nearby, in the region's largest city, Lakewood. There I improve existing roadways in order to connect the new highway to the city's main drag, and then build lots of new development in that general area. Skip to the last minute or so for the region view.- published: 31 Dec 2013

Replacing the trees in Emonds Field, Yakutat Bay (Part 2 of 2)
Today's video continues in the same vein of my last upload, where I replaced the outmoded Pacific Northwest tree controller trees (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28296-pacific-northwest-tree-controller/) in Lakewood with the Cascadia tree controller set I've already switched to in newer parts of the region (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/29275-cascadia-tree-controller/). In not too long, the entire region will be using the newer trees. Again, it's not so much a numbered entry in the "official" Yakutat Bay video series so much as a recorded chill sesh where I show you guys a part of the project that's currently dominating the time I spend working on the region. Yakutat Bay 6 - Building Northern Jamaica (Part 2 of 2)
I've been building more in Yakutat Bay, expanding the development in the region farther and farther north, but it's come to the point again where I need to pack in some serious residential population in order to facilitate continued agricultural demand. Last time I laid the groundwork for an expansive new neighborhood on the north side of Jamaica which when complete will house almost 25,000. This time I fully zone the area and improve it with commercial zones at major intersections, new trees and a few small park features. Then I allow the building part of the development process to finally proceed and take stock of the completed project before finishing the video. The next phase of development will see the expansion of Jamaica's downtown as well as new neighborhoods on the western and eastern peripheries of the city and infrastructure upgrades.- published: 08 Feb 2014

Yakutat Bay 8 - Building a Tiny Mountain Town from Scratch
This new video from Yakutat Bay focuses on expanding the settled area further north, near the highest elevations of the region. After a cursive revision of an isolated farming area in the mountains to better match the contours created by the new terrain mod, I dive into the foundation of the tiny city of Strictville. The first step is to revise and expand the regional highway to cut through the bleak snowscape where the town will be platted out. Then it's on to laying out the street network, finding a suitable economic engine for the settlement, zoning, building a park, and providing the variety of services that are requisite to creating any decent residential area.- published: 25 Mar 2014

These days
FTX US PAYA Yakutat...Alaska. music by Dj Lime El Project Yakutat (ICAO: PAYA) is a public airport located three miles (~5 km) southeast of the city of Yakutat in Alaska, United States. The airport is publicly operated by the state of Alaska Department of Transportation. The airport is serviced by Alaska Airlines, Alsek Air Service, Yakutat Coastal Airlines, and other small local airlines. Between October and May the airport is blanketed with snow, and runway 2/20 along with it's associated taxiways are closed to aircraft. During the summer months it receives most of its traffic in the form of fisherman flying to Yakutat to catch Alaskan salmon. FULL HD- published: 15 Apr 2014

Replacing the trees in Lakewood, Yakutat Bay
Replacing the trees in Lakewood, Yakutat Bay
I'm trying out something a little bit different today and just making a chill recording of the kind of thing I've been spending most of my time with SC4 doing lately. I wasn't quite ready to create another numbered entry in the Yakutat Bay series but I really wanted to bring you guys something new from the region. You might remember that a while back I switched Yakutat Bay from using the Pacific Northwest tree controller (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28296-pacific-northwest-tree-controller/) and Tarkus' Wasco terrain mod (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3777.msg146912#msg146912) to the Cascadia tree controller (http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/29275-cascadia-tree-controller/) and the Sudden Valley terrain mod (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2867). In order to affect the change, I have to manually load up every tile and demolish all of the old trees then replant the new ones in their place. It's been a massive undertaking and I'm still in the middle of the process but, with Lakewood converted, the end is in sight with only nine tiles left to switch over. I know I express doubt in the video as to whether Lakewood was within the first ten cities to be founded in Yakutat Bay, in fact it was the fifth. Here's a quick and dirty region capture to show you what it looks like as of the end of the video: http://i.imgur.com/Sl6BhYp.jpg- published: 15 Apr 2014

Yakutat Bay 3 - The road north
This video's a bit of a different type from the two previous. The focus is on building a narrow and winding new highway through a mountain pass in order to connect the Joinville-Skookumville area with the yet undeveloped northern plain of the region. I already completed about five miles of the highway through the central-northern part of the pass, so today is about completing the missing 3-4 mile segment of highway between there and the railroad near Skookumville.- published: 30 Dec 2013

Yakutat Bay 2 - A second railroad in Joinville
Welcome back to Yakutat Bay. Today the order is to build a new railroad connecting outside the region which will at least for the first ten miles or so run roughly parallel to the existing inland railway, bypassing its many wide curves. It's quite possible that it could form the easternmost segment of the region's most important trunk line at some point in the medium to far future. Then it's on to more industrial development, and a new residential neighborhood on the southeastern edge of town with a central square with a park, separating the newly expanded industrial district from the industrial buildings around the main east-west thoroughfare. That road also gets widened in order to better accommodate its high traffic volumes, being the main route at this point connecting the entire Yakutat Bay region to the exterior. At the end of the video the region contains more than 90,000 people, with almost a quarter residing in Joinville.- published: 28 Dec 2013
