Quick tour round Rumtek Monastery in the mountains of the Sikkim area of the Indian Himalayas (Full blog here http://live-less-ordinary.com/). Rumtek is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery (Dharmachakra Centre) where monks live, pray and teach. The compound is controversial with Tibetan's in India and gun toting security at the front is certainly unique. Outside the monastery we spin prayer wheels. Inside the monastery we find monks playing games, hitting gongs and climbing roofs before disappearing for to eat. This is the most famous Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Sikkim.- published: 18 Sep 2013

Rumtek Monastery Gangtok-Sikkim
Rumtek (Tibetan: རུམ་ཐེག་དགོན་པ་,, Wylie: Rum-theg Dgon-pa), also called the Dharmachakra Centre, is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the Indian state of Sikkim near the capital Gangtok. It is a focal point for the sectarian tensions that characterize the Karmapa Controversy. Originally built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in 16th century, at the same time as Phodong Monastery and Ralang Monastery, Rumtek served as the main seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim for some time. But when the 16th Karmapa arrived in Sikkim in 1959, after fleeing Tibet, the monastery was in ruins. Despite being offered other sites, the Karmapa decided to rebuild Rumtek. To him, the site possessed many auspicious qualities and was surrounded by the most favorable attributes. For example, flowing streams, mountains behind, a snow range in front, and a river below. With the generosity and help of the Sikkim royal family and the Indian government, it was built by the 16th Karmapa as his main seat in exile. After four years, construction of the monastery was completed. The sacred items and relics brought out from Tsurphu Monastery, the Karmapa's seat in Tibet, were installed. On Tibetan New Year's Day (Losar) in 1966 the 16th Karmapa officially inaugurated the new seat called, "The Dharmachakra Centre, a place of erudition and spiritual accomplishment, the seat of the glorious Karmapa. MOUNTAIN MONKS Part Two: The Rumtek Monastery
MOUNTAIN MONKS Part Two: The Rumtek Monastery
Mountain Monks is an entertaining documentary-travelogue from BhakTV, shot by Vasudeva Joly in the Eastern Himalayas. The film explores many similarities between the Tibetan Buddhist monks and the Hindu Vaishnava monks. The first half-hour of the film centers on Darjeeling, a picturesque hill-station of North Bengal. The second half-hour is set in Sikkim, starting with its capital city Gangtok. Vasudeva then meets a young lama at the ancient Rumtek Monastery, and takes us on a roller-coaster ride up an earthquake-torn mountain track to a glacier lake. Changghu Lake is nestled at 3,750m above see level, right on the Tibetan border. The travelogue ends with an unexpected encounter with a Himalayan Bear.- published: 24 Jun 2014

The holi Rumtek Monastery, Sikkim
The Rumtek monastery is home to the monks who perform the sacred rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Many sacred objects are housed within the complex, and one of the most magnificent is the Golden Stupa, which contains the precious relics of His Holiness the Sixteenth Karmapa. Surrounding Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre is the stupa walkway, where monks, pilgrims, and visitors alike perform kora. Centuries earlier, the fourth Sikkimese Chogyal asked the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje (b. 1556), to build monasteries in Sikkim, long considered an exceptionally holy place by Tibetan Buddhists and now home to many ancient Kagyu monasteries. Three of these--Ralang, Phodang, and Rumtek--were founded under the auspices of the Ninth Karmapa.- published: 28 Jun 2014
