Norman Wisdom Trouble in Store

Norman (Norman Wisdom), a lowly stock clerk at Burridge's department store, is in love with another employee, Sally Wilson (Lana Morris), though he has been unable to muster the courage to let her know how he feels. After he antagonizes the new head of the store, Augustus Freeman (Jerry Desmonde), he is promptly fired. On his way out, Norman helps Miss Bacon (Margaret Rutherford) carry her bulging suitcases, unaware that she is an audacious shoplifter. Freeman sees Norman assisting a "customer" and rehires him. Meanwhile, Peggy Drew (Moira Lister), the store's personnel manager, flirts with Mr. Freeman, while plotting with her boyfriend Gerald (Derek Bond) to rob the place. Norman is fired and rehired again and again, as his escapades somehow manage to benefit the store. He also finally becomes acquainted with Sally, chasing her down through the city streets to return her purse. His antics make her laugh. After his latest firing, Norman is alarmed to find the handsome, suave Gerald trying to get to know Sally better. When he goes to the man's apartment to warn him to stay away from her, Norman inadvertently uncovers the robbery plot, scheduled to coincide with a big sale the next day. But, he is unable to get Sally or anyone else to take him seriously. Sally eventually decides to bring Norman's story to the attention of the management, but tells the wrong person, Miss Drew, and is tied up for her efforts. Norman finds her and together, they foil the thieves. Freeman takes Norman back into his employ...but not for long.

Margaret Karle Schak was a child of the Depression. And while many in Rutherford were affluent, her family struggled to survive. Still, she remembers her childhood as a happy time. She lived in an era when automobiles were a rarity, and riding her bike across the Erie Railroad tracks to get a drink of water from one of the area's "boiling springs" was a normal occurrence. The winner of the first North Jersey Spelling Bee, she would travel to Washington for the national finals. There she met President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Later in life, she was the first woman ever elected to the Rutherford Borough Council. A sudden resignation resulted in her becoming Rutherford's first female mayor. Rutherford Historic Narratives interviews Margaret Karle Schak. Interview highlights include the importance of listening at the dinner table as a child, her success as a champion speller, and running for office as a woman and "getting the vote out." Rutherford Historic Narratives were produced by the Rutherford Civil Rights Commission, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Galloway, Jr. shared the story of how members of his family first came to Rutherford more than a century ago, and were early champions for civil rights. He also discusses how Mount Ararat Baptist Church was at the center of religious and social life for Rutherford's African Americans. In addition he recounts his own confrontations with racism, his enduring bond to the town where his family found acceptance and his determination to help preserve key aspects of local history. In addition, he speaks at length about the role his father played in the civil rights movement. Peter S. Van Winkle is a member of a family whose very history is also the history of Rutherford. One of his ancestors, a Dutch farmer, was the first non-Native American to reside within the borders of what is now the Borough of Rutherford. In many ways, members of the Van Winkle family were the architects of modern Rutherford. In the mid-1800's their real estate firm created the grid of streets and blocks that is now downtown Rutherford. The family also donated the land upon which Rutherford's iconic railroad station stands. That station transformed Rutherford from a sleepy farming community to an inner ring suburb easily accessible from New York City. Interview highlights include the importance of the Passaic River in town history, the founding of a General Store which is now A.W. Van Winkle & Co., and the origins of the popular Rutherford Labor Day Street Fair. The Van Winkle family is quite literally the "founding family" of Rutherford, NJ. Rutherford Historic Narratives were produced by the Rutherford Civil Rights Commission, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of its founding.
